The claim has appeared in several rounds of rumor coverage, but the reports describe unverified claims and speculation—not published specifications or a product Sony has announced.
What the PS4 handheld rumor actually claims
A June 5, 2024 report by Push Square described social-media claims that a forthcoming Sony handheld could run PS4 games natively and support some PS5 games if developers patched them for it. Push Square said it could not corroborate the claim. The report therefore does not establish that Sony is making such a device, or that the alleged capabilities are real.

The claim is not the only version of the rumor. An earlier report from Push Square, published February 2, 2024, attributed a similar idea to hardware leaker Moore’s Law Is Dead. That account described a dedicated handheld for digital PS4 games, with possible PS5 compatibility on a case-by-case basis if developers made updates. It also characterized the supposed concept as early-stage, at least two years away, and not greenlit. Those are details attributed to a leaker, not verified Sony plans or a release schedule: Push Square’s February 2024 report.

In December 2024, Tom’s Guide reported that Digital Foundry staff had heard about a handheld from off-record sources and discussed PS4 as a more plausible native target than PS5. In May 2025, Tom’s Guide covered a NeoGAF forum leaker’s claim of a full PlayStation handheld, possibly timed around a future PS6 launch. Neither report is an official product announcement: December 2024 report and May 2025 report.

Native PS4 gameplay is not the same as Portal streaming
A handheld that runs a game natively would execute it on the device itself. Streaming instead sends gameplay from another device or service to a screen. Tom’s Guide describes PlayStation Portal as a streaming device connected to a main console; that is a different proposition from a portable console running PS4 games locally. The cited reporting does not establish that Portal runs PS4 games on the device itself.
Portal is therefore a real product to compare with the rumor, not evidence that the rumored handheld exists. The distinction matters: a report about streamed play does not confirm local hardware capability, a native PS4 library, or compatibility with any specific game.

Sony has made handhelds before, but that history is not confirmation
Sony’s 2013 announcement about PS Vita said it had “almost 150 dedicated games” and access to “over 900 titles” across the listed PSP, Minis, PS One, and PlayStation Mobile categories. Sony also named independent games available on both PS4 and PS Vita. Those figures describe the Vita and the categories Sony listed in 2013; they say nothing about the existence, library, or capabilities of a future device. Sony’s 2013 announcement.
What has not been established
The cited reports do not establish an official name, release date, price, hardware configuration, or compatibility list for a new PlayStation handheld. They also do not verify that the device will run PS4 games natively or receive PS5 titles through developer patches. Until Sony announces a product and publishes details, those points remain speculation rather than buying information.
