No—Sony has not officially unveiled a new standalone console called “PSP” in the official Sony and PlayStation sources checked as of August 18, 2026. There is no confirmed product name, model number, release date, price, specification sheet, game library, or preorder for a new PSP.

The product most often confused with a new PSP is PlayStation Portal. Sony officially calls Portal a remote player, not a successor to the original PSP or a self-contained PlayStation handheld.

The short answer: the new PSP is not official

A rumor, retailer listing, YouTube video, social-media post, or anonymous leak does not constitute a Sony announcement. For a product to be official, look for confirmation from Sony Interactive Entertainment, PlayStation Blog, Sony’s pressroom, or an official product page.

No such announcement was found for a new PSP in the official sources checked as of August 18, 2026. That means claims that Sony has confirmed a 2026 or 2027 launch, PS5 or PS6 compatibility, a particular processor, backward compatibility, or a specific price remain unverified. Sony could announce new hardware later, but those details should not be presented as facts now.

Why people are confusing it with PlayStation Portal

PlayStation Portal remote player is Sony’s current portable PlayStation device. It is designed primarily to stream compatible games from a PS5 over Wi-Fi.

  • It has an 8-inch LCD display with up to 1080p resolution and 60 frames per second, according to Sony.
  • Its controls are based on the DualSense design, including adaptive triggers and haptic feedback in supported games.
  • It does not have the same role as the original PSP, PSP go, PlayStation Vita, Nintendo Switch, or a PC gaming handheld.
  • Sony does not market it as a PSP successor or as a native PSP-games system.

Calling Portal “the new PSP” is therefore misleading. It is a streaming and Remote Play accessory for the PlayStation ecosystem, not a traditional standalone console.

How PlayStation Portal actually works

Remote Play requires a PS5

For ordinary Remote Play, Portal connects to a PS5. The console must be connected to broadband internet and either powered on or in Rest Mode, and the game must be compatible and installed on the PS5.

Sony lists 5 Mbps as the minimum connection requirement and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. Actual results depend on latency, upload speed, Wi-Fi congestion, router quality, and the connection used by both the PS5 and Portal. A wired connection for the PS5 and a strong modern Wi-Fi connection for Portal can help reduce interruptions.

Portal is not compatible with PS4 consoles as the Remote Play host, according to Sony’s compatibility information. A reader who owns only a PS4 should not buy Portal expecting it to stream that console.

Cloud streaming can work without your own PS5—but it is not local play

Sony also supports cloud streaming of selected PS5 games on Portal for eligible subscribers to PlayStation Plus Premium. This means some Portal owners can play supported games without having a PS5 in the home.

That feature does not turn Portal into an offline handheld. It still requires internet access, an eligible account and subscription, Sony’s supported catalog, and suitable network performance. Cloud streaming is also different from downloading a game to the device or playing from a cartridge.

Does PlayStation Portal play PSP games?

Sony’s official Portal pages describe PS5 Remote Play and cloud streaming of selected PS5 games. They do not establish Portal as a native PSP emulator or as a replacement for the PSP software ecosystem.

Therefore, Portal should not be advertised as a device for playing PSP games. Claims involving unofficial emulation, exploits, or unsupported software are separate from Sony-supported functionality and should not be confused with an official feature.

Portal versus a real PSP-style handheld

Feature PlayStation Portal Standalone PSP-style console
How games run Remote Play or supported cloud streaming Would run games locally
PS5 required Yes for Remote Play; no for supported cloud streaming Not necessarily
Offline gaming No Potentially, depending on Sony’s design
PSP game support Not officially presented as a feature Would need confirmation from Sony
Subscription PlayStation Plus Premium required for supported cloud streaming Unknown unless officially announced

The central distinction is local versus streamed play. A standalone handheld contains the hardware and storage needed to run games itself. Portal receives gameplay video over a network, while your inputs travel back to the PS5 or Sony’s cloud servers.

What Sony has actually announced under the PSP name

Sony’s historical PSP announcements help explain why “PSP” is sometimes used as shorthand for a rumored future handheld.

PSP-3000

On August 21, 2008, Sony announced the PSP-3000, a revised PSP model planned for release in October 2008. It featured an improved high-contrast LCD and built-in microphone while retaining the PSP’s 4.3-inch, 480×272 display, UMD drive, Memory Stick PRO Duo storage, 64 MB of main memory, and 189-gram weight.

PSP go

In 2009, Sony announced PSP go, model PSP-N1000. It was smaller and focused on digital distribution, removing the UMD drive. This was an official PSP-branded product—not evidence that a similarly named modern device exists today.

PlayStation Vita

Sony’s next-generation successor to the PSP was ultimately named PlayStation Vita, rather than PSP 2. That history is another reason a future Sony handheld should not be assigned the PSP name until Sony does so itself.

What is known—and not known—about a future Sony handheld

Reports or executive comments about Sony exploring additional hardware or other PlayStation form factors may indicate strategic interest, but they are not product announcements. Until Sony publishes confirmation, the following remain unknown:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Whether a new standalone handheld exists.
  • Whether Sony would call it PSP, Vita, or something else.
  • Its hardware, screen, battery, storage, and game compatibility.
  • Whether it would play PS4, PS5, PS6, PSP, or Vita software.
  • Its launch date, regional availability, and price.

A retailer placeholder, speculative SKU, or repeated headline cannot fill those gaps.

Should you buy PlayStation Portal?

Portal makes sense if you:

  • Already own a PS5 and want to play away from the television.
  • Have reliable home Wi-Fi and mobile internet when travelling.
  • Prefer DualSense-style controls and a larger screen.
  • Accept streaming rather than local installation and offline play.
  • Want the option of supported PS5 cloud streaming and have, or plan to get, PlayStation Plus Premium.

Portal is the wrong purchase if you:

  • Want a fully independent handheld.
  • Expect offline gaming or cartridge-based play.
  • Specifically want native PSP, Vita, or retro-game compatibility.
  • Own only a PS4 and expect Portal to use it as the host.
  • Have unstable Wi-Fi, high latency, strict data caps, or poor upload performance.

Sony announced a U.S. recommended retail price of $249.99 effective April 2, 2026; retailer prices and regional pricing can differ. The standard Portal and Midnight Black version are the same basic gaming platform, so a color premium is difficult to justify unless appearance or availability matters to you.

PlayStation Link products such as PULSE Explore earbuds and PULSE Elite headsets are optional. Portal can function without them and supports wired audio through its 3.5 mm headset jack.

Fixing a poor Portal connection

If Portal stutters or disconnects, the problem may be the network rather than the handheld. Check that the PS5 is using a reliable connection, preferably wired; move Portal closer to a capable router; reduce congestion from other devices; and test the upload speed and latency of the connection. Also remember that some games requiring VR or particular extra peripherals may not be compatible.

Bottom line

Sony’s new “PSP” is not finally official. As of August 18, 2026, the confirmed portable PlayStation product is PlayStation Portal, a remote player with supported PS5 cloud streaming—not a new standalone PSP and not an officially supported PSP-games handheld. Buy Portal if you want convenient PS5 streaming and understand its network requirements. Do not buy it expecting the independent, offline PSP successor suggested by the headline.
