There is no confirmed surprise PlayStation State of Play on the calendar. Sony’s official page lists September 3, 2026 as its latest broadcast and says future dates will be announced on PlayStation Blog and @PlayStation on X. The idea that Sony could steal Nintendo’s thunder is speculation—not a scheduled-event report.
What Sony has confirmed
Sony describes State of Play as its video program for PlayStation updates, announcements and trailers. The latest edition listed on its official State of Play page took place September 3, 2026, with two separate broadcasts: State of Play and State of Play Japan.
The September 3 broadcasts
- The main show featured updates from PlayStation Studios and third-party developers, and ended with an extended look at Final Fantasy VII Revelation.
- State of Play Japan, hosted by Yuki Kaji, focused on games from studios in Japan and Asia.
The same page includes a trailer for limited-edition GTA VI DualSense controllers. That is an optional product mention, not a requirement for watching State of Play.
Is another State of Play scheduled?
No date for a later broadcast appears on Sony’s official page checked for this article. Its FAQ directs viewers to PlayStation Blog and @PlayStation on X for the next live-stream announcement. Sony’s events index also lists the September 3 recap and earlier 2026 broadcasts, including a June 2 State of Play and a February 12 recap. That recent activity does not confirm another show.

When Sony announces a broadcast, its official channels are the reliable place to confirm the date and details. Sony says viewers can watch through PlayStation’s official Twitch, YouTube and Facebook streams, with replays available through PlayStation.com, PlayStation Blog and YouTube.
Why Nintendo is part of the conversation
Nintendo’s official page documents a Nintendo Direct held September 9, 2026. Its announcements included Monster Hunter Wilds and a major expansion coming to Nintendo Switch 2, as well as a Switch 2 edition of Pikmin 4. That makes the Direct a recent counterpart in the showcase conversation, but it does not indicate that Sony has planned a response.

“Stealing Nintendo’s thunder” is therefore a prediction about attention, not an established outcome. The available official information confirms neither a surprise Sony date nor comparable audience or impact figures. The fact that the listed Sony and Nintendo presentations occurred six days apart is not evidence of a competitive effect.

A meaningful comparison would need the details of both broadcasts, rather than speculation about timing alone. Readers can look at:

- 🚀 CPU: 3.5GHz, 8-core AMD Zen 2
- 🚀 Storage: Custom 825GB SSD
- 🚀 RAM: 16GB GDDR6
- 🚀 GPU: 10.3 teraflop RDNA 2 GPU

Sony’s September 3 event provides a two-show format to compare against; the Nintendo Direct page establishes its September 9 announcements. Neither official page provides a like-for-like audience metric.
