Sony’s current company data reports more than 95 million units sold in worldwide as of June 30, 2026. Those totals measure consoles sold into the market, not necessarily purchases by players.
How many PS5 consoles have been sold worldwide?
Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Business Data & Sales page reports more than 95 million PS5 units sold in worldwide as of June 30, 2026. Sony’s latest annual series, in its FY26.1Q Supplemental Information, lists 93.7 million cumulative sell-in units as of March 31, 2026. The June figure is a later data point; it does not change the date attached to the annual-series figure.
The headline’s 59 million milestone refers to the same annual series’ 59.2 million cumulative sell-in units as of March 31, 2024. It is therefore a dated milestone, not Sony’s current total.
Does 59 million mean shipped or bought by players?
Sony labels the 59.2 million figure “cumulative sell-in.” Sell-in counts units sold into the market, while sell-through refers to units sold to consumers. The two measures describe different stages and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Sony used the consumer-facing measure in its December 20, 2023 announcement, PlayStation 5 Achieves Milestone of 50 Million Units Sold to Consumers: it said more than 50 million PS5 consoles had been sold through to consumers worldwide. Jim Ryan, then President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, said the milestone reflected the global PlayStation community’s support and passion for games from PlayStation Studios and its partners.
Sony’s Corporate Report 2024 separately reported 56 million cumulative PS5 sell-through units by March 31, 2024. Its note says this includes both PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition. That consumer-sales figure is not the same as the 59.2 million sell-in total.

How did the reported sell-in total change?
Sony’s FY26.1Q supplemental information provides these dated points in its cumulative sell-in series:
| Date | Cumulative PS5 sell-in |
|---|---|
| March 31, 2024 | 59.2 million units |
| March 31, 2025 | 77.7 million units |
| March 31, 2026 | 93.7 million units |
These are worldwide cumulative totals at the dates shown, not annual sales figures. In a separate report, Sony’s Corporate Report 2024 stated that cumulative sell-in had reached 61.7 million as of June 30, 2024. That June figure and the March 31, 2024 annual-series entry refer to different dates and reporting contexts, so they should not be read as competing values for the same date.

What does the milestone say about PlayStation?
Console sales are one part of a broader platform that includes games, subscriptions and peripherals. In its Corporate Report 2024, Sony reported 116 million monthly active users across PS4 and PS5 as of June 30, 2024, and said more than half of PlayStation players were PlayStation Plus subscribers. These are company-reported figures with their own dates and populations; they do not explain what caused console sales or establish a judgment about the PS5’s quality.
