Stardew Valley is a 2D pixel-art game. Its overhead, angled viewpoint and layered scenes can make the world look deep, but that appearance does not mean its gameplay is 3D-rendered.

Why does Stardew Valley look like it has depth?

The game presents its world from an overhead, angled viewpoint. Buildings, terrain, objects and characters are arranged in a way that suggests distance and height, while pixel art supplies the visual detail. Perspective and visual layering can create a sense of depth in a 2D image; neither alone establishes that the scene is made from 3D models.

It is most accurate to describe Stardew Valley as a 2D pixel-art game, rather than call it “2.5D.” The official materials cited here do not document every part of the rendering pipeline, so they do not establish whether any particular internal effect uses 3D techniques.

Who made the game’s art?

Eric Barone, who develops as ConcernedApe, created Stardew Valley and made its art as part of the game’s original solo development. The official press page credits him with the game’s art, music, programming and design. In a 2016 interview, Barone said he had not done pixel art before beginning the game, a first-person account that supports describing its look as pixel art: the interview, syndicated on Steam.

ConcernedApe’s May 5, 2013 graphics update discusses the game’s graphics and art and shows development examples. It offers context for the authored visual style, not a technical specification of how the game renders each scene.

Does the programming language make it 3D?

No. The official Stardew Valley FAQ says the game is coded in C#, but a programming language does not determine whether a game is 2D or 3D. The FAQ does not provide enough detail to identify the rendering pipeline, so it is better not to infer a specific engine, tile size, resolution or internal technique from that fact.

Is the board game a 3D version?

No. Stardew Valley: The Board Game is an official physical tabletop adaptation, announced by ConcernedApe on February 23, 2021. It is a separate product, not a 3D edition of the video game, and has no bearing on the video game’s graphics.
