Usually, you cannot tell from polish alone. A credible verdict comes from tracing the earliest available upload, matching the exact file to a dated first-party record, reverse-searching distinctive frames, comparing edits, and treating metadata and visual artifacts as supporting—not decisive—evidence. A real game capture can be recut or miscaptioned, while CGI or a fan edit can imitate gameplay. Use the bounded labels confirmed, likely, unverified, or misleading or altered rather than declaring a clip genuine or fake on the basis of one clue.
What exactly is the leaked trailer supposed to prove?
Start by freezing the claim before examining the video. “This is a new trailer” is different from “this is gameplay from an unreleased build,” “this proves the game exists,” or “this account was authorized to publish it.” Each claim needs different evidence.

Record the game name, the alleged trailer title, claimed build or platform, stated date, uploader name, URL, description, thumbnail, and the place where you found the link. Save screenshots of the page and its surrounding context. Include visible comments, channel information, redirect addresses, and any warning that the clip is a reupload. A deleted page is not automatically fake, and a surviving file may be a copy of an earlier upload.
- Identity claim: Is the footage from the named game at all?
- Timing claim: Was it captured from the alleged build or before the stated announcement?
- Authenticity claim: Is the file an official or authorized trailer, rather than a fan edit or compilation?
- Context claim: Does the caption accurately describe what appears in the clip?
- Authorization claim: Did the uploader have permission to distribute it?
Keep those questions separate in your notes. A frame can be genuine game footage while the caption, date, or uploader attribution is false.

How do I preserve evidence before the leak disappears?
Capture the page as you first encountered it, then preserve the video without changing the original file if possible. Record the page URL, upload timestamp as displayed, title, description, account handle, view count, thumbnail, and visible edits. If the page is removed, your screenshots show what was actually claimed rather than what a later repost says was claimed.
Download only a video file that your normal security practices allow; do not install a player, extension, codec, or executable offered by the page. Keep the downloaded file read-only and make a working copy for frame grabs. Note the file size, format, duration, frame rate reported by a reputable media utility, and any checksum you create. These details help compare copies, but none proves origin by itself.
Preservation is about documenting a claim, not validating it. A timestamp supplied by a platform is the time that platform received or displayed a post; it is not automatically the recording date or the date of the first upload.
How can I find the earliest available upload?
Follow reposts backward rather than accepting the most popular copy. Search distinctive wording from titles and descriptions, inspect quoted upload dates, and compare thumbnails. When two pages claim to be the original, place their dates, edits, watermarks, and surrounding seconds side by side.
Assess the uploader’s documented relationship with the developer, publisher, platform holder, event organizer, or an established press outlet. A channel name containing “official,” an anonymous “insider” label, a blue check, or millions of views does not establish authorization. An account with a long, consistent history may provide useful context, but history is not proof that a particular file is genuine.
Earlier does not always mean original. A scheduled premiere, a private mirror, a time-zone difference, or a platform’s delayed processing can change displayed dates. Conversely, a high-quality reupload may look older than a compressed original. Identify the earliest traceable appearance and record what evidence connects it to the file you are examining.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen an uploader claims access to a development build, look for corroboration that does not depend on that uploader’s own statements: a matching first-party notice, an independently archived event listing, or reporting that identifies the same asset. Treat uncorroborated claims as allegations.

How do I check the developer or publisher’s official records?
Use a known official destination—such as the developer’s or publisher’s own news, media, video, or support page—and search there for the exact title, date, description, platform wording, and an embedded or linked copy. Do not begin with a shortened URL or a link supplied by the leak account. A dated first-party record that matches the actual file is substantially stronger than a third-party page embedding the same video.
Compare the candidate against the official copy at the file level, not merely by finding one similar screenshot. Check the order of scenes, cuts, soundtrack, subtitles, logos, aspect ratio, end card, and the seconds immediately before and after a distinctive moment. If the official page identifies a trailer but the leaked file contains extra scenes, a different voice-over, or a different edit, describe those differences instead of calling the whole clip fake.
Distribution rules provide context but do not settle authenticity. Rockstar Games Customer Support states: "Any posting of in-game footage from leaked copies of the game prior to its official release date will be taken down, regardless of how the game was obtained." That is a takedown policy, not a statement that every removed video was genuine. SEGA similarly says unreleased footage may be used only when it has been officially released by SEGA, including footage from officially released trial versions. A rights-holder objection shows that distribution was challenged; it does not independently authenticate every underlying frame.

It may reflect a private test, a staged event, a regional page, an expired campaign, or a fabricated claim. “No official page found” is evidence of an incomplete record, not proof of a fake.
How do I reverse-search frames and thumbnails?
Choose frames that contain readable text, unusual objects, recognizable scenery, logos, distinctive user-interface elements, or an end card. Save several moments, including one or two seconds around each frame, and search both the full image and a crop. TinEye, Bing Visual Search, Google image search, and InVID-related workflows can reveal an older trailer, footage from another game, a fan edit, or a recycled screenshot with a new caption.
Search the thumbnail separately from in-video frames. A leak account may use an unrelated promotional image, and a genuine frame may have been mirrored, cropped, overlaid, recolored, or recompressed. Try a crop without the uploader’s watermark and another that preserves the watermark; each can produce different matches. Search distinctive text as an exact phrase as well as an image.
A match is a lead, not a verdict. If a frame appears in an older official trailer, compare the surrounding seconds and audio to determine whether the leak is a full copy, a recut, or a compilation. If a search returns nothing, that does not prove the clip is original: private files, newly generated material, low-resolution uploads, and transformed images may not be indexed.

Keep a record of the result page, its date, and the matched asset. A reverse-search result can establish that a frame existed earlier or appeared in a different context; it cannot, by itself, identify who made the new upload.
How should I compare two candidate copies?
Compare the actual edits, not just a matching hero shot. Put the copies on a timeline and note where each cut begins and ends. Examine the following dimensions:
| Comparison point | What to inspect | What it can and cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| Provenance | Earliest traceable page, uploader history, and independent corroboration | Supports attribution; does not prove authorization alone |
| First-party cross-link | Exact title, date, description, platform wording, and official embed | Strong evidence when the file itself matches |
| Edit continuity | Scene order, cuts, missing or added seconds, transitions, and end card | Reveals recuts and compilations |
| Audio and subtitles | Voice-over, music mix, subtitle wording, language, and sync | Can distinguish versions; dubbing or edits may explain differences |
| Image geometry | Aspect ratio, letterboxing, resolution, frame cadence, and visible cropping | Shows transformations; does not identify the recorder |
| Watermarks and logos | Position, opacity, timing, and whether they cover cuts | May identify a source or later overlay; easily copied |
| Metadata consistency | Container fields, codec, creation tags, and file history | Supporting context only; fields can be stripped or changed |
| Uploader authorization | Evidence of permission from the rights holder | Separate from whether the underlying frames are genuine |
The sharpest or most widely shared copy is not automatically the original. An identical rehost can preserve every frame while remaining unauthorized. Conversely, a lower-quality file may be the earliest available copy but still have an incorrect caption.
Can metadata prove where a trailer came from?
No. Metadata can support an investigation, but it cannot independently prove a recording date, game build, or source. Platforms commonly strip fields, users can edit or copy them, and a file can inherit tags from an unrelated export.
Do not infer origin from a filename, codec, upload timestamp, or missing metadata alone. A file named for a development build may have been renamed minutes ago; a consumer editing program may have re-encoded a legitimate capture; and a missing creation field may simply reflect platform processing.
Midjourney explains that metadata can be copied or fabricated, while editing, cropping, screenshots, re-encoding, and platform processing can remove markers. The same principle applies to authenticity labels and verification results: a positive marker is useful context, not conclusive proof, and its absence is not evidence of fakery.
Use metadata to ask better questions. If two purportedly identical files have different codecs, durations, or frame rates, determine whether one was re-encoded. If a claimed recording date conflicts with the game build visible in the footage, flag the conflict and seek a higher-quality original. Report the contradiction, not an unsupported certainty.

What visual clues suggest CGI, AI generation, or a fan edit?
Visual realism is weak evidence. A HUD, realistic lighting, high frame rate, recognizable voice, game logo, or polished animation can be fabricated or taken from genuine material and placed in a false context. CGI can imitate gameplay, and a real capture can be edited, unfinished, or mislabeled.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteLook for unstable text, impossible reflections, geometry that changes between adjacent frames, inconsistent shadows, or objects that lose detail during motion. Treat each as a reason to request the full-resolution original and surrounding frames—not as proof from one artifact. Compression, motion blur, interpolation, subtitle overlays, and screen recording can create similar defects.
Inspect continuity across cuts. A character’s inventory, health value, weather, lighting direction, or location may change in a way that reveals a montage assembled from separate scenes. That shows editing or context problems; it does not establish whether each source scene is synthetic.
The available guidance does not establish one visual test that reliably separates every genuine game capture from CGI or AI-generated footage. A defensible assessment combines visual observations with provenance, first-party records, frame searches, and file comparison.
How do I separate a real clip from a misleading caption?
State exactly what the evidence supports. You may be able to confirm that a scene appears in an official trailer while being unable to confirm that the leak account received it from a developer. You may also find that a genuine trailer has been slowed, mirrored, dubbed, or placed beside unrelated scenes.

- Asset identity: Does the file match a known official or authorized video?
- Context: Does the title accurately describe the game, build, platform, and event?
- Integrity: Are the cuts, audio, subtitles, and overlays unchanged?
- Authorization: Is there evidence that this uploader was allowed to publish it?
Write separate findings for each. “This frame is official” does not mean “this upload is official.” “The publisher requested removal” does not mean “the publisher confirmed the clip.” Precision prevents a true fragment from lending credibility to a false story.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can I investigate a leak without exposing my device?
Never download an alleged leak executable merely to inspect the video. A page that redirects to an executable, browser extension, “verification” survey, crypto payment, special player, or account-login form is a security risk regardless of whether the trailer itself is genuine.

What verdict should I publish or share?
Use a bounded label that states the evidence limit. Include the exact contradiction or supporting record so another reader can reproduce your reasoning.
| Label | Use it when | Recommended wording |
|---|---|---|
| Confirmed | A first-party or explicitly authorized source identifies the specific trailer and the candidate file matches it. | "The file matches the trailer identified by the rights holder; this confirms the asset, not necessarily this uploader’s authorization." |
| Likely | Several independent clues support the attribution, but direct first-party confirmation is missing. | "The available provenance and frame matches make this likely, but the source has not been directly confirmed." |
| Unverified | Records are missing or conflict, or the surviving file cannot be matched confidently. | "The evidence is insufficient to authenticate or reject the clip." |
| Misleading or altered | Evidence contradicts a particular caption, edit, source, or context. | "The footage is real, but this caption is misleading because it combines scenes from different releases." |
“Unverified” is not a claim that the trailer was fake. It is the correct limit when provenance remains incomplete. If later evidence appears, update the label and identify what changed.
What is the fastest repeatable checklist?
- Freeze the claim: write down what the clip is supposed to prove, including game, build, platform, date, and uploader.
- Preserve context: save screenshots, URL, title, description, thumbnail, and visible page warnings.
- Trace backward: locate earlier uploads and compare dates, edits, watermarks, and continuity.
- Check first-party destinations: search official news, media, video, and support pages for the exact asset.
- Reverse-search frames: use distinctive images, crops, thumbnails, and readable text.
- Compare files: inspect cuts, audio, subtitles, logos, aspect ratio, and surrounding seconds.
- Use metadata cautiously: treat fields as context that can be stripped, edited, copied, or fabricated.
- Inspect visuals in context: record anomalies, then seek the original and adjacent frames.
- Separate claims: distinguish genuine footage, accurate context, file integrity, and uploader authorization.
- Protect your device: never install software or submit credentials to view or “verify” a leak.
- Apply one bounded label: confirmed, likely, unverified, or misleading or altered, with the reason.
This sequence prioritizes the earliest traceable source and dated first-party records over social-media reach, visual polish, or a single technical artifact.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a copyright takedown prove that a leaked trailer is genuine?
No. A takedown demonstrates that a rights holder objected to distribution under its policy. It does not establish that every removed copy was authentic, complete, or accurately captioned.
Does missing metadata mean a video was fabricated?
No. Social platforms and editing software often remove or replace metadata. Missing fields reduce the available context, but they do not distinguish a fake from a legitimate file that was re-encoded.
