Yes—if you buy games digitally, want Series X hardware, and the Digital Edition is meaningfully cheaper than the disc model where you live. Skip it if you use physical Xbox games, buy or borrow discs, resell games, or want Blu-ray playback: this console has no disc drive, and there is no way to add one.
What is different about the Xbox Series X Digital Edition?
The Xbox Series X – 1TB Digital Edition is a digital-only Series X with a 1TB custom NVMe SSD. Microsoft describes it as offering Series X performance and access to digital games across four Xbox generations. Its defining difference from the disc-equipped Series X is simple: it has no optical drive. The disc model can play supported physical Xbox game discs and Blu-ray media; the Digital Edition cannot read discs. Microsoft’s product listing has the configuration and specifications; TechRadar’s comparison likewise identifies the drive as the central difference.
| Consideration | 1TB Digital Edition | Disc-equipped Series X |
|---|---|---|
| Digital Xbox games | Yes | Yes |
| Physical Xbox game discs | No optical drive; cannot read them | Can play supported discs |
| Blu-ray playback | Not available | Can play supported Blu-ray media |
| Internal storage | 1TB custom NVMe SSD | Not stated in the cited comparison sources |
How much should you pay?
Compare live local listings for both consoles rather than relying on an old launch price or an inferred new MSRP. Microsoft listed the Series X Digital at US$599.99 in the United States as of October 3, 2025. On June 25, 2026, Microsoft announced that Xbox console prices would rise worldwide by US$150 for 1TB models, effective August 1, 2026. The announcement does not give a revised model-by-model price or every regional retail price. Adding US$150 to the earlier US listing produces US$749.99, but that is arithmetic, not a revised Digital Edition price published by Microsoft. Check current listings in your country before deciding.
Microsoft’s 2024 launch announcement gave the Digital Edition a US estimated retail price of US$449.99; that is historical launch context, not current pricing. Microsoft also said certified refurbished consoles would be offered through Microsoft Stores for up to US$100 off MSRP. Stock, eligibility, and actual discounts vary, so verify availability rather than assuming a suitable refurbished unit is on sale. Microsoft’s 2026 price update and its US price list effective October 3, 2025 provide the cited figures; the 2024 announcement provides the launch figure.

Judge the price gap against your habits. Digital games work on either model, but a disc drive gives you the option of buying used games, borrowing or lending discs, reselling physical copies, and playing supported disc media. If those options matter to you—or you already own physical Xbox games—the drive may be worth paying more for. If you will never use it, the cheaper model can make sense, provided the saving is meaningful.
Does the disc-to-digital feature make this console compatible with discs?
No. On August 26, 2026, Xbox VP Jason Ronald announced a feature that lets players claim a digital entitlement for supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc games. The claim process requires inserting the disc into a compatible Xbox console with a disc drive and launching the game. Microsoft said the disc continues to work as before; the initial feature covers thousands of titles, with more to be added. It does not let the all-digital Series X read a disc. See Xbox Wire’s feature announcement for the details.

Who is the Digital Edition a good fit for?
Consider buying it if
- You purchase games digitally and do not need disc playback.
- You want Series X hardware and the Digital Edition costs meaningfully less than the disc model in your local market.
- Your Xbox library is already digital, or your household has decided to buy games digitally.
Choose the disc model or compare carefully if
- You own physical Xbox games or expect to buy used discs.
- You borrow, lend, or resell physical games.
- You want Blu-ray playback.
- The Digital Edition costs nearly as much as the disc-equipped model; the missing drive is then a substantial loss of flexibility for anyone who might use it.
What about storage and Game Pass?
The Digital Edition has a 1TB internal SSD, and Microsoft lists a separately sold storage expansion card as supported. If you expect to keep a large installed library, check the card’s current price and compatibility before adding it to your budget; the Microsoft technical specifications describe the supported expansion capacity.
Game Pass is a separate purchase, not an included console benefit to count toward the Digital Edition’s value. Check current membership prices and the catalog in your region independently; neither is established by the console price announcements.
