Nintendo raised Switch 2 hardware prices in Japan in May 2026 and in the United States, Europe and Canada on September 1, 2026. In the US, the suggested retail price went from $449.99 to $499.99 before tax. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said the changes reflect a range of market conditions—including higher component costs, exchange-rate trends and oil prices—not one isolated cause. He acknowledged the increase makes the console harder for some people to buy, but did not predict how much it would affect sales.
How much did the Switch 2 price increase?
The revised prices vary by market and product listing. These are Nintendo’s published changes; the currencies should not be compared at face value, and the tax treatment differs by region.

Nintendo said other regions would also see price revisions, with local subsidiaries announcing the timing and details. What did Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa say?
In a May 11, 2026 Q&A summary about Nintendo’s fiscal year ended March 2026, Furukawa was asked why the company was changing the console’s price in its second year and why regional changes differed. The English document is a translation of the Japanese original. He said the decision was based on broader market changes that Nintendo expected to affect its dedicated video game platform business over the medium to long term, rather than one specific factor.

“This change in hardware pricing was not due to any one specific factor. Rather, the decision was made in light of various changes in the recent market conditions which we believe will have a medium- to long-term impact on the global outlook of our dedicated video game platform business.”
Furukawa named rising memory and other component prices, foreign-exchange trends and oil prices among the conditions. He said holding prices steady amid those changes would significantly hurt hardware profitability, so Nintendo chose to pass along a portion of its costs. Does Nintendo expect the hike to hurt sales?
Furukawa did not give a numerical forecast for the effect on Switch 2 sales. He did acknowledge that the price change raises the barrier to entry for people deciding whether to buy the console.
“I will not discuss the specifics of how this price revision could impact Nintendo Switch 2 sales, but we recognize that this raises the barrier for entry to a certain extent for people deciding whether to make a purchase.”

He said Nintendo aims to grow the console’s installed base by communicating the appeal of games and experiences unique to Switch 2. Nintendo has not promised that this will be the last price revision, nor announced another one. Asked about continued uncertainty in component prices, Furukawa said the company would prepare to respond flexibly to whatever situation arises. Why the earlier 2025 price notice was different
Nintendo’s August 2025 US pricing update covered the original Switch family, selected products and some Switch 2 accessories; it said the Switch 2 console price was unchanged at that time. That notice preceded the separate 2026 Switch 2 hardware revision. The console launched in the US at $449.99 in 2025, before the revised $499.99 price took effect in September 2026.
