The Outer Worlds 2’s PS5 disc holds very little game data. Does It Play? recorded about 1.32 GB on a tested Premium Edition disc, and Push Square reported that the game needed a 71.6 GB download to play after patch 1.002. The criticism that the disc works mainly as an installer is fair. “Glorified coaster” overstates it, because the disc is still a physical product that starts the install and can be kept, traded or displayed as a physical copy.
What the disc actually contains
Does It Play? tested the PS5 Premium Edition and recorded version 1.000.000 at 1.32 GB on the disc. That figure describes one physical copy checked by that site, not a specification published by the publisher or developer. Push Square later reported the download size for patch 1.002, which is a separate number tied to a later version.

The gap between those two data points is the whole story. The disc carries a small base, and the bulk of the game arrives over the network before you can play.
Why the disc is so small
None of the reporting reviewed includes an official explanation from the publisher or developer for the small disc footprint. Any reason offered here would be speculation, so this article does not offer one. What readers can verify is the measured result: the physical copy is effectively an entry point, not a complete installer.

Where the criticism holds, and where it overreaches
Where it holds
- A buyer who expects to insert the disc and play immediately will need a large download first. The reported figure for patch 1.002 is 71.6 GB.
- Anyone with limited PS5 storage or a slow connection should plan the install before buying, because the disc does not reduce the download.
- Owners who value a self-contained offline install will not get one from the disc alone.
Where it overreaches
- The disc is a physical product. It still starts the install and has a physical presence on a shelf.
- The label “glorified coaster” implies no value at all. The sources do not support that. They show only that the disc contains little data.
- The disc is not the only way to get the game. Digital copies from the PlayStation Store deliver the same game through the same download path.
Playing offline after the initial download
Push Square reported that the game can be played offline once the initial download is complete. That is a publication’s reading of the product, not a statement from the developer, and it applies to the version it tested. Do not assume the game needs a persistent internet connection once installed. The main requirement is a connection for the initial download.
Premium Edition context
Xbox Wire announced the game’s PS5 release and described the Premium Edition as containing the base game, a DLC Pass covering two future story expansions, a premium prize pack, and a digital artbook and soundtrack. The artbook and soundtrack are described as digital items rather than disc content, so they should not be counted toward the disc’s data. The PlayStation Store listing gives the same October 29, 2025 release date. Its license language covers digital content and does not establish the physical disc’s rights or resale terms.

What is not established
- Resale value, licensing conditions for the physical disc, and any long-term server implications. The reporting does not address them.
- Current retail prices and retailer stock for the PS5 disc.
- The size of the latest patch, or whether regional packages differ in size. The 71.6 GB figure is tied to patch 1.002 and may have changed since.
Readers buying today should check the download size shown in the PS5 system before deciding whether the physical copy is worth the trade-off.
