In Monster Hunter Wilds, Yian Kut-Ku is most vulnerable to Ice and Thunder. The MHWILDSBUILD.com hitzone summary for Ver. 1.042 (September 2026) puts average Ice hitzone at 19% and Thunder at 18%, with Water next at 13%. Those are game-data averages, not a guarantee of the best result for every weapon or build. The rest of this guide covers where the Bird Wyvern appears, which body parts to target, how its attacks open windows for you, and what it drops.
What Yian Kut-Ku is and where it appears in Wilds
Monster Hunter Tools and Kiranico both classify Yian Kut-Ku as a Bird Wyvern, noting its large beak and ears. The in-game description characterizes it as skittish, but ready to attack anything it perceives as a threat. Groups of them arrive in the Scarlet Forest during the season of Plenty. The same ecology text notes that the groups show no eggs or young, which it links to mate-seeking and feeding rather than breeding. That is the game’s own explanation, not an independently verified zoological finding.

The database listings name two habitats for this game: Scarlet Forest and Iceshard Cliffs. Kiranico lists a base health value of 3,800 for the monster. That is a base game-data figure; quest scaling is not specified in the sources reviewed, so do not treat it as the HP you will face on a given hunt. Check the monster’s entry at Kiranico’s Yian Kut-Ku page for current values.

Elemental weaknesses (Ver. 1.042 hitzone data)
The table below uses MHWILDSBUILD.com’s Ver. 1.042 average elemental hitzones. Only the neck values are given for Ice and Thunder because those are the only neck figures the summary states.

Physical hitzones by part
Raw damage depends on your weapon’s damage type, so the head and wings should be compared by slash, blunt, and shot values rather than one number. These are the Ver. 1.042 figures from the same summary.
| Part | Slash | Blunt | Shot | Stun |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Head | 56 | 75 | 80 | 100 |
| Wings | 80 | 42 | 70 | Not stated in the cited summary |
The head is the stronger raw target for blunt and shot weapons, while wings are the better slash target. Kiranico provides further part data, separating normal parts, wounds, and weak points, if you need more detail than this summary gives.

Choosing an element for your hunt
Icy Veins recommends bringing a Water, Ice, or Thunder elemental weapon. It also notes that Poison, Sleep, Paralysis, Blast, and Stun can work. The practical choice depends on what you already own:
- Ice or Thunder weapon: the highest average hitzone values in the table above. Aim for the neck if your weapon allows it.
- Water weapon: a solid elemental option at 13% average, useful if you already have a strong Water weapon.
- Status or blast approach: the guide lists these as workable alternatives. Their damage profile is not compared against elemental values in the sources reviewed.
Attack patterns and the openings they create
Icy Veins describes the monster’s standard set: forward pecks and lunges, a double tail whip, a bite lunge, fireballs, and a newer downward head charge that tracks you briefly. The guide’s advice is to evade, block, reposition, or offset depending on your weapon and the specific attack. There is no single universal counter.
Fatigue
When the monster tires, it slows down and cannot use fireballs for a period. That window is your chance to commit to focused damage.

Enraged behavior
When enraged, Yian Kut-Ku chains its attacks faster and leaves fewer gaps. Keep room to reposition, and watch the attack animation through to its end before committing to a dodge or a counter.

Yian Kut-Ku is sensitive to sound, so a Sonic Bomb can interrupt it. The tradeoff is that after it recovers, the monster attacks more aggressively. Use the interruption to reset a bad position or heal, not as a way to extend an unfavorable exchange. Icy Veins also lists Flash Pods, Sonic Bombs, Shock Traps, and Pitfall Traps as effective utility items for this fight.
