What is Overdrive, and does it really make PS5 games free?
Overdrive’s indexed website describes the app as “a game library for the PS5” and says it appears on the console’s home screen. That is the site’s own description, not confirmation that the app works or supplies games and DLC. No independent source verified its operation, catalog, or access to free content. Overdrive’s indexed site description is therefore not enough to establish that the claims are real.

In short, the available evidence supports saying that Overdrive is being presented as a PS5 game-library app; it does not support saying that it reliably provides free games or DLC. The app’s appearance in reports around PS5 jailbreaking also does not establish a connection between a particular exploit and Overdrive’s claimed features.
How the September 2026 jailbreak reports relate
On September 30, 2026, Ars Technica reported that the Relapse exploit worked on PS5 firmware up to version 13.6. The report described a vulnerability in the console’s WebKit browser that could lead to kernel write access. Ars also noted that Sony had released system software version 14.00.00 in mid-September. Those details describe the reporting at that time; they should not be treated as a current compatibility guarantee.

Tom’s Hardware also reported on September 30 that Relapse supported firmware versions 7.00 through 13.60. Its article discussed the tension between keeping a console on older firmware and accessing newer game updates that may require later software. Some details about individual game requirements were attributed to player reports. The compatibility range and game examples are dated reporting, not an assurance that a particular console, app, or game will work today.
The trade-off: older firmware or newer game updates
The firmware issue is a practical constraint in the reporting, not proof that Overdrive works. A console kept on a version associated with an exploit may not be able to install a newer game update that requires later system software. Updating can, in turn, move the console beyond a reported exploit’s compatibility range. The specific version ranges above reflect September 2026 coverage and may be superseded as Sony releases updates or exploit details change.

This makes the decision less simple than “jailbreak for free games.” The reporting describes competing goals—maintaining a particular firmware version and using newer releases or updates—but does not verify Overdrive’s catalog or provide a dependable way to assess whether its advertised content is available.
Sony’s agreement and support guidance
Sony’s US PlayStation 5 System Software Licence Agreement prohibits, among other things, using tools to circumvent PS5 security or authentication and using hardware or software to make system software accept unauthorized or pirated software. It also lists possible actions Sony may take if it determines the agreement has been violated. Sony’s UK support guidance recommends installing the latest system update as soon as possible and warns that unofficial update data or a modified console might affect operation, warranty, or repair services. Sony’s PS5 update support page provides that guidance. The advice is relevant to the risks of modifying a console; it does not verify anything about Overdrive.
