If you are currently unable to sign in, launch a game, or access the Store, use the checks below to determine whether you are seeing a broad service incident or a local problem.
How to check whether the Xbox network is down
- Check Microsoft’s official Xbox status page. Look for active alerts affecting account and profile, multiplayer, Store and subscriptions, cloud gaming, or game content. What happened in the latest major Xbox outage?

Independent outage history recorded two disruption windows on July 27 with a combined duration of approximately 10 hours and 55 minutes. Reported symptoms included:
- inability to sign in;
- missing or incomplete game libraries;
- digital games refusing to launch;
- difficulty accessing purchased content;
- Store and purchase failures; and
- problems with parts of Xbox services and apps.
Xbox CTO Scott Van Vliet later explained that an update to an underlying service used for Xbox Home Console sharing, Game Pass purchased content, and some PC scenarios left that service unresponsive. A separate bug in the Xbox client software stack caused additional digital-game licence checks to fail. Together, the failures created a cascade: the console could not reliably enumerate a player’s library or confirm the entitlement needed to launch a game.
Xbox said it planned to move ownership of the underlying licensing service to the Xbox team and issue a client update. The reported mandatory-update date was August 17, 2026. That date describes the planned response to the historical incident; it is not evidence that a new outage is happening now.

Why some physical-disc games also failed
The July incident also exposed an important limitation in the idea that a disc always makes a game independent of Xbox services. Microsoft said disc-based entitlement checks are intended to continue working offline because saved entitlements are stored on the console. However, a problem prevented some consoles from correctly using those saved entitlements during the outage. As a result, some players could not launch physical games even with the disc inserted.
This does not mean physical games are useless offline. It means that offline access depends on the game, console setup, installed data, updates, entitlement handling, and whether the title requires an online service. Many modern games still need a download, a large update, an initial licence check, or online servers for multiplayer and connected features.

If you are building an offline-oriented library, an Xbox Series X physical game disc can reduce dependence on digital-store access for compatible titles, but it is not a fix for an Xbox network outage and should not be treated as a guarantee of offline play. Check each game’s requirements before buying it for that purpose.
What to do if Xbox status looks normal
When Microsoft and independent monitors show no broad incident, work through these steps in order. Stop if the official status page changes to a confirmed outage; repeated local changes will not repair a Microsoft-side failure.
1. Restart the affected app or console
Close and reopen the Xbox app, or restart the console normally. If the console is unresponsive, use a full restart rather than repeatedly attempting to launch the same game. Avoid deleting saved data or removing your account as an initial troubleshooting step.
2. Test the console’s connection
Open the console’s network settings and run its network test. Look for a failure involving internet access, Xbox network services, multiplayer, NAT, or DNS. A local connection failure should be addressed differently from a service outage.
3. Restart the home network
Power down the router and modem according to the manufacturer’s normal procedure, wait for them to reconnect, and then test Xbox again. If other devices also have connectivity problems, the issue is more likely to be your home network or internet provider.

4. Confirm the Microsoft account
Make sure the console or Xbox app is signed into the account that owns the game or subscription. This matters particularly when a title is shared through a Home Xbox arrangement or when several accounts use the same console.
5. Check updates
Look for pending console, Xbox app, and game updates. A client that is out of date can fail to authenticate even when the Xbox network itself is available. Do not interrupt an update that is already installing.
6. Check the individual game
If the Store, account, and other games work, look for maintenance or an outage from the game’s publisher. Online-only modes may be unavailable even when Xbox sign-in and the broader network are healthy.
What not to do during an outage
- Do not repeatedly buy the same game, subscription, or add-on. Store and entitlement delays can make a completed purchase appear to have failed. Check your order history and payment account before trying again.
- Do not delete local saves as a first response. A service-side authentication problem will not normally be repaired by removing saved data, and deletion can create an avoidable recovery problem.
- Do not remove accounts or reset the console immediately. Factory-resetting a console is disproportionate while Microsoft is investigating an incident.
- Do not assume an isolated social post confirms a global outage. Posts can describe a regional problem, an Xbox 360 issue, an account lockout, or one game’s servers.
- Do not assume a disc guarantees access. The July incident showed that even intended offline entitlement handling can malfunction.
Could this be an Xbox 360 problem?
