It has a strong case as one of Nintendo’s standout recent remasters, but “best” is a judgment, not an established ranking. The case rests on meaningful additions to a distinctive 2015 Wii U RPG, a visual upgrade, and a return that preserves the game’s focus on exploring Mira and fighting on foot and in giant Skells.
Why this remaster stands out
Nintendo brought the 2015 Wii U game to Switch on March 20, 2025, describing the Definitive Edition as visually enhanced and expanded with new story elements. The original’s unusual identity remains central: a science-fiction adventure across the alien world of Mira, with exploration and giant mechs at its heart. Nintendo describes it as a standalone story centered on a customizable player character. Nintendo’s announcement gives the clearest account of what the edition adds and how it frames the story.

The additions matter because they make this more than a straightforward trip to a newer platform. The visual improvements refresh the presentation, while added story content gives returning players something new to discover. The available official description does not quantify the scope of those additions, so they should not be mistaken for a wholly rebuilt game.

Nintendo Life’s Switch review praises the balance between abilities used on foot and combat in Skells, arguing that the combination elevates the fighting. It also calls the game an impressive return for a decade-old RPG. That is a critic’s assessment, not a measured comparison against every Nintendo remaster, but it supports calling this edition a standout for players drawn to its exploration and layered combat.

How to judge “best” fairly
There is no objective winner established by the available evidence, and “in years” does not specify a comparison period. A defensible editorial verdict should compare recent Nintendo-published remasters on the same grounds rather than treat praise for this one as proof of a portfolio-wide ranking:
- New content: Does the edition add story or gameplay, and how substantial are those additions?
- Technical improvements: What changes visually or in performance, and on which hardware?
- Respect for the original: Does the new version preserve the original design and identity, or revise them?
- Reader fit and value: Which platform version suits the reader, and what does its purchase include?
For Xenoblade Chronicles X, Nintendo confirms visual enhancements and added story elements, and the review offers a positive independent perspective on combat. Those points make the case credible. Without equivalent evidence for other remasters, a definitive cross-catalog ranking would go further than the facts allow.
