Xbox’s next-generation first-party console is called Project Helix. As of October 8, 2026, Xbox has officially confirmed the codename, a goal of playing both Xbox console and PC games, a custom AMD system-on-chip, and alpha hardware for developers beginning in 2027. It has not announced a consumer release date, a retail price, or a final product name. Most of the recent headlines come from reporting on internal Xbox meetings, which is a different category of evidence from official announcements, and this article keeps the two separate.
How the official timeline has unfolded
Xbox has released its next-generation details in a handful of dated statements. Most come from Xbox Wire, the company’s official blog, with a few key moments reported by Windows Central.

What Xbox has committed to
Four points in Xbox’s official statements are specific enough to act as the baseline for what the console is meant to do.
Play Xbox console and PC games
Xbox says Project Helix is designed to play both Xbox console and PC games. In the March 11, 2026 Xbox Wire update, Jason Ronald, VP, Next Generation, wrote: “Project Helix is designed to play your Xbox console and PC games, delivering leading performance and ushering in the next generation of console gaming.” The April 23 platform statement repeats that direction. Treat this as a stated goal. Xbox has not yet published the full software interface, the storefronts that would be supported, or an exact compatibility list.

A custom AMD chip
The March 11 update says Helix uses a custom AMD system-on-chip, co-designed for the next generation of DirectX and FSR. That detail follows from the June 2025 partnership, which covers future first-party consoles along with cloud hardware. The official material does not provide clock speeds, memory configuration, or other performance specifications.
Backward compatibility
Ronald also wrote: “And, we’re committed to keeping games from four generations of Xbox playable for years to come.” This is a commitment, not a catalog. The announcement does not list which titles or hardware generations will be covered, or how each will be delivered.

Developer hardware is the only dated milestone
The only specific schedule in Xbox’s official update is that the company “plans to ship alpha versions of the hardware to developers beginning in 2027.” That is a developer milestone. It is not a launch window for players, and it does not tell you when Helix will reach stores.

Tom’s Guide (Scott Younker, October 21, 2025) speculated about a launch timeframe, and some coverage has pointed to a 2027 or 2028 window. Those are outside estimates. Xbox has not confirmed either year for consumers.

What the reported Gen-10 family means
The newest material comes from Windows Central’s October 6, 2026 report on an internal town hall. The report quotes CEO Asha Sharma: “We are moving to a family of devices for Gen-10. There is not one device that fits all. We will certainly have a great console first, but we also know that many players will be on the go.” She also said Xbox would share more as its plans develop.
This is useful context for how Xbox is thinking about hardware, but it is not a product specification. The reported remarks do not describe the form factor, performance, price, or timing of any device other than the console. Nothing in the official statements confirms a handheld or any third-party device as part of the Gen-10 lineup.

Reading the “premium” positioning
In an October 2025 interview, then-Xbox President Sarah Bond described the next-generation console as “a very premium, very high-end curated experience.” Windows Central (Adam Hales, October 21, 2025) noted that she did not give technical details or release plans in that interview. The phrase signals how Xbox wants the product positioned. It is not a price, a component list, or a decision to leave out lower-cost hardware.
What is still not established
- A retail release date and a retail price.
- A final product name beyond the Project Helix codename.
- Detailed hardware specifications.
- Complete PC-game and storefront compatibility.
- The exact list of backward-compatible games.
- The identity, form factor, and timing of any additional Gen-10 devices.
Context from Xbox’s own ecosystem figures
Xbox Wire’s March 11, 2026 update cited two figures that frame the platform rather than Helix itself. The Xbox Play Anywhere catalog spans more than 1,500 games, and more than 5,000 developers around the world were building for Xbox. Both are company-reported numbers from that date. They do not measure Project Helix titles or its development team.

What to watch next
- Whether Xbox names the consumer console or announces a price and release date. Neither has been announced.
- Any official detail on the other Gen-10 devices that Sharma referred to.
- Developer alpha hardware reaching studios, which Xbox has scheduled to begin in 2027.
- Specifications, storefront support, and a compatibility list, which Xbox has not yet published.
Until Xbox publishes those details, the most reliable information is the official material listed in the timeline above.
