The 60-second answer
itvdata.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows DirectShow component called iTV Data Filters. It provides the iTV Data Capture and iTV Data Sink filters used by some older television, capture, DVD, and multimedia software. Microsoft lists these filters in its DirectShow filter categories.

Do not download a replacement copy from a random DLL website. First install pending Windows updates, restart, and repair Windows with DISM followed by SFC:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
If only one old application reports the error, repair or reinstall that application after checking Windows. The problem may be the application, its files, its architecture, or a missing COM registration rather than a missing Windows file.
What itvdata.dll does
DirectShow is Windows multimedia infrastructure used by older programs to connect media sources, filters, and output devices. The iTV Data Capture filter and iTV Data Sink filter are part of that framework.
This does not make itvdata.dll a Visual C++ runtime, .NET library, graphics-driver file, or standalone “iTV Data Filters” application. It is associated mainly with the DirectShow era of Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8. DirectShow remains available for compatibility, but Microsoft recommends newer Media Foundation APIs for new multimedia development. See Microsoft’s DirectShow documentation.
An old media player, television-tuner utility, video-capture program, DVD application, or other legacy DirectShow program may request the file when it starts. That does not prove that a particular game or application universally requires it.
Where the file belongs
On 64-bit Windows, the directory names are counterintuitive:
C:WindowsSystem32normally contains 64-bit system files.C:WindowsSysWOW64normally contains 32-bit system files.
Microsoft explains this behavior in its file-system redirector documentation.

Public Windows inventories show itvdata.dll in both locations for Windows 7. They list different file sizes for the 64-bit and 32-bit copies, confirming that architecture matters. Those records are historical examples, not a complete version list for Windows 10 or Windows 11. Do not copy an old Windows 7 file into a modern installation simply because the name matches.
What may have caused the error
The likely cause depends on whether the error affects Windows generally or only one program.
| What you observe | More likely explanation |
|---|---|
| Several programs fail or Windows reports system-file problems | Windows component corruption or deletion |
| One old media or capture program fails | Damaged, obsolete, or incompatible application |
| The file disappeared after security software activity | Antivirus quarantine or a false positive |
| A game fails after an incomplete update | Damaged game files |
| The file exists but loading still fails | Wrong architecture, missing dependency, or COM registration problem |
| Only an N edition of Windows lacks media functionality | Missing Media Feature Pack |
Also note what changed immediately before the error: Windows Update, cleanup software, antivirus detection, malware removal, a failed repair, or an application reinstall.
Fix 1: Update Windows and restart
Install pending updates before replacing anything manually.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not insist on a restart.
- Open the affected application again.
Microsoft’s Windows Update guidance explains the normal update process.
If the problem began immediately after an update, record the update date and exact error before attempting a rollback or System Restore. Do not assume the update itself deleted the file; the application may simply have exposed an older compatibility problem after restarting.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the safest primary repair when Windows owns the missing or damaged component.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a repair source, which is why Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. The Microsoft SFC guidance covers this sequence.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If SFC says it found and repaired corrupt files, restart and test again. If it says it could not repair some files, run DISM again after installing updates, then repeat SFC. If both commands fail, the issue may involve disk corruption, servicing damage, or an unsupported legacy component.
You can inspect detailed SFC entries with:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
To scan one existing file, use the path matching the affected process:
sfc /scanfile=C:WindowsSystem32itvdata.dll
Do not use this command if the file does not exist at that path. Do not substitute SysWOW64 merely because the application is old.
If you prefer help identifying which system repairs changed and which files remain damaged, Outbyte PC Repair can scan and show issues; its repair functions are performed by the full version, and it is not required when DISM and SFC resolve the problem.
Windows 7 qualification
The commands above are intended for supported modern Windows versions, including Windows 10 and Windows 11. Windows 7 supports SFC, but do not present the modern /RestoreHealth workflow as universally valid there. An older computer may need Windows Update, Microsoft’s System Update Readiness Tool, installation media, or an in-place repair.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
A valid system file can be quarantined after a false positive, but restoring a detected file without checking it can expose the computer.
- Open Windows Security from Start.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries for
itvdata.dll. - Expand an entry and check its path, detection name, date, and action.
- Restore the file only when the location, Microsoft signature, and detection history establish that it is a false positive.
- Run a full scan afterward.
Microsoft warns about the risks of restoring threats in its Protection History guidance.
If the file repeatedly disappears, do not keep restoring it. Run an offline security scan, review third-party antivirus logs, check for disk errors, and investigate unauthorized cleanup software or malware.

If one application fails while Windows and other programs work, the application is the next suspect.
First identify the caller:
- Write down the program name and full error text.
- Check whether the error appears only when that program starts.
- Note whether the program is a media player, capture utility, tuner application, DVD tool, or another older multimedia program.
- Check the publisher’s official installer or support instructions for a current release.

- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, if available.
- Test the application.
- Use Reset only after checking whether it removes application settings or data.
For a traditional desktop program, open Control Panel, choose Programs and Features, select the application, and choose Repair or Change when offered. If repair is unavailable, uninstall it, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the publisher’s official installer.
If a game reports the error, use the launcher’s own repair function rather than adding a DLL. Steam provides Library → game → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity. Epic provides Library → three dots beside the game → Manage → Verify.
Reinstalling the original application remains the definitive fix when that application supplied a private copy or expects files that Windows does not provide.
Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit application cannot reliably use a 64-bit component in place of its 32-bit counterpart, and a 64-bit application cannot be repaired by copying a 32-bit file into System32.
To identify the program type:
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Details.
- Locate the program’s executable.
- Right-click the column heading and choose Select columns if architecture is not displayed.
- Look for the platform or architecture information available on your Windows version.
You can also check the application’s publisher documentation. Do not copy System32itvdata.dll to SysWOW64, or the reverse.
If the file exists but the application still fails, record:

Windows N editions omit certain media technologies. If Settings → System → About identifies the edition as Windows 10 N or Windows 11 N, install the Media Feature Pack through Windows settings:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Optional features.
- Choose View features or Add an optional feature.
- Search for Media Feature Pack.
- Select it and choose Next, then Install.
- Restart Windows.
Use Microsoft’s Media Feature Pack list for Windows N editions for edition-specific instructions.
This applies only to N editions. Installing the pack is not proof that it specifically restores itvdata.dll, so continue with application repair if the error remains.

Fix 7: Update capture and multimedia drivers
A legacy application may fail after a tuner, camera, capture-card, or graphics-driver problem. This does not make itvdata.dll a driver, but updating the relevant device can restore the application’s expected DirectShow path.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, and Cameras.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
- If the device recently stopped working, open Properties → Driver and check whether Roll Back Driver is available.
- For a clean reinstall, use the device manufacturer’s official support page and its Windows-compatible installer.
If Windows cannot identify the correct device driver, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show outdated drivers; driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is not necessary if the manufacturer’s installer resolves the device problem.
Why regsvr32 is not the first fix
A missing DLL and a missing COM registration are different problems.
Do not run regsvr32 itvdata.dll simply because the filename appears in an error. DirectShow filters can use COM registration, but public evidence does not establish that this particular Microsoft DLL exports DllRegisterServer. regsvr32 will not repair a deleted file, wrong architecture, damaged component store, or missing dependency.
Recommended Free Tools
Use registration commands only when the error specifically says class not registered and the application or vendor gives an exact instruction. On 64-bit Windows, a verified 32-bit filter normally uses:
%SystemRoot%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe "full-path-to-file.dll"
A verified 64-bit filter normally uses:
%SystemRoot%System32regsvr32.exe "full-path-to-file.dll"
Microsoft documents DirectShow filter registration and the regsvr32 command separately. Follow the application vendor’s instructions rather than guessing.
Advanced recovery: System Restore
If the error began after a known update, cleanup operation, failed repair, or software installation, System Restore may reverse the system change.
- Press
Windows+R. - Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review affected programs.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace personal documents, but it can remove applications or drivers installed after the selected restore point. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore guidance.

Avoid these unsafe fixes
- Do not download
itvdata.dllfrom a random DLL repository. - Do not copy a file from another computer without matching the Windows build, architecture, signature, and source.
- Do not copy files between
System32andSysWOW64. - Do not install DirectX, Visual C++, or .NET expecting them to restore this Windows component. Microsoft states that the DirectX End-User Runtime does not modify DirectShow.
- Do not use a public file hash as proof that a DLL is Microsoft-authoritative.
- Do not disable antivirus protection to force a file into a Windows directory.
The safer sources are Windows Update, the Windows component store, official installation media, Microsoft repair tools, and the original application publisher’s installer.
FAQ
Is itvdata.dll malware?
The filename itself is not evidence of malware. It is a genuine Microsoft DirectShow component, but a malicious file can be given the same name. Check its location, digital signature, Defender history, and scan results rather than judging it by rarity.
Does itvdata.dll belong to Windows 10 or Windows 11?
It is a Windows DirectShow component, but historical inventories do not prove that one particular build ships in every Windows 10 or Windows 11 release. Identify the exact Windows edition and build before replacing anything.
Should I install DirectX or Visual C++?
No. Those are not the normal repair for this component. Repair Windows and the application that requests the file instead.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
The file exists. Why does the error continue?
The application may be loading the wrong architecture, missing another dependency, expecting a different version, or reporting a COM registration failure. Capture the executable name, path, architecture, and complete error message.
What if every repair succeeds but one old program still fails?
The program may no longer support the installed Windows version. Reinstall it from its publisher, try Windows compatibility settings, or contact the publisher. If the application is obsolete, replacing a system DLL may not solve the underlying incompatibility.
