maintenanceui.dll errors usually indicate a damaged or missing Windows component, not a missing game or Visual C++ file. You may see messages such as:
- “This application failed to start because MaintenanceUI.dll was not found.”
- “The program can’t start because MaintenanceUI.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Error loading MaintenanceUI.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “MaintenanceUI.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The 60-second answer
maintenanceui.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system DLL called Maintenance Settings Control Panel. It supports the Windows Automatic Maintenance interface, which brings together background tasks such as updates, security scans, cleanup, and scheduled maintenance.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a source. The official procedure is documented in Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance.

What maintenanceui.dll is
The file belongs to the Windows component Microsoft-Windows-MaintenanceUI. Its description is Maintenance Settings Control Panel, and its publisher is Microsoft Corporation.
It is associated with Automatic Maintenance rather than with:
- Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable
- DirectX
- .NET
- A graphics driver
- A normal game dependency
- A third-party application runtime
Windows uses Automatic Maintenance to coordinate background activities. The settings and control-panel integration are described in Microsoft’s Automatic Maintenance documentation.

Public file records show the component in Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10. Those records contain different versions and architectures, so no single version or file size should be treated as correct for every Windows installation. The correct copy depends on the Windows build, edition, language, architecture, and servicing state.
Windows 11 installations can also differ by build and component servicing. Do not assume that a file copied from another computer is suitable.
Where the file should be
On a typical Windows installation, check:
C:WindowsSystem32MaintenanceUI.dll
You can open the folder without guessing the Windows installation directory:
- Press
Windows+E. - Click the address bar.
- Enter
%windir%System32. - Press Enter.
- Search for
MaintenanceUI.dll.
On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains native 64-bit system files. SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files used through Windows WOW64 redirection. That naming is confusing but normal. Microsoft explains the behavior in its file-system redirector documentation.
Do not move a file between these folders to solve an error. A 32-bit or wrong-build copy can produce a bad-image or architecture error even when the filename is correct.
What caused the error
The likely causes, in practical order, are:
- A corrupted or deleted Windows component.
- Component-store corruption after a failed update or repair.
- Antivirus quarantine or incomplete malware cleanup.
- An unofficial DLL copied into a Windows or application folder.
- A mismatch between Windows architecture, language, build, or servicing level.
- Disk or file-system corruption.
- A damaged startup entry or application that is incorrectly requesting the file.
- A profile-specific startup problem.
The wording “not designed to run on Windows” does not necessarily mean that the file is absent. It commonly points to corruption, a wrong architecture, an invalid binary, or an integrity problem.
Fix 1: Update Windows and restart
Start with the least invasive repair.
Windows 11
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if it does not immediately require a restart.
- Test the program or startup action again.
Windows 10
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart and test again.
If the error appeared after an interrupted update, updating can restore the correct protected component. If Windows Update reports an error or the DLL remains missing, continue with DISM and SFC.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Run both commands from an elevated terminal.
- Open Start.
- Type
TerminalorCommand Prompt. - Right-click the result.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for DISM to finish. It may appear to pause at a percentage for some time. Do not close the window just because progress is slow.

When DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
SFC checks protected Windows files and replaces damaged copies when a valid component-store source is available.
How to interpret the result
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no damaged protected files. Restart and test the original program or startup action.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart Windows and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Continue to the next section.
- DISM failed: Record the error code and continue with a matching repair source or an in-place repair.
The commands repair Windows components, not third-party programs. If a particular application has its own damaged files, repair or reinstall that application from its official installer after Windows is healthy.
Manually repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting unnecessarily slow. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show what needs attention; its repair actions are provided by the full version, but it is optional and does not replace Windows repair when the component store itself is damaged.
Fix 3: If SFC cannot repair maintenanceui.dll
First save the relevant SFC entries.
In the same elevated Command Prompt, run:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log > "%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
Open sfcdetails.txt on the desktop and look for entries mentioning MaintenanceUI.dll, its component, or a related servicing failure.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If DISM cannot restore the file from Windows Update, use a repair source that matches the installed Windows edition, language, architecture, and build. Microsoft documents alternate sources with /Source and /LimitAccess in its Windows image repair documentation.
Do not use an arbitrary ISO or a DLL copied from another PC. A mismatched source can leave the component store in a worse state.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may quarantine a damaged file or remove one during malware cleanup. Do not immediately restore it based only on the filename.
- Open Start and select Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Check the detected file path and action.
- Leave the item quarantined if its location, signature, or provenance is unclear.
Only restore the file if it is confirmed to be the genuine Microsoft-signed Windows file and the detection is understood. Microsoft describes this process in its Protection History guidance.
After malware removal, repair Windows with DISM and SFC rather than copying back an unverified DLL.
Fix 5: Check architecture and Windows details
A correct repair depends on more than the filename. Confirm:
- Whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit
- The installed Windows edition
- The display language
- The current build
- Whether the error occurs in
System32,SysWOW64, or another folder - Whether an unofficial copy exists outside the Windows directory
To view basic details:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose About.
- Review System type, Windows edition, and Windows specifications.
If a program is 32-bit, it can still use Windows system components through WOW64. That does not mean you should place a 32-bit copy in System32, or a 64-bit copy in SysWOW64.
Also distinguish MaintenanceUI.dll from:
MaintenanceUI.dll.mui
The .mui file is a language-resource file. It is not the main DLL. Missing language resources can affect displayed text, but replacing the main DLL will not repair a missing or mismatched .mui file.

Fix 6: Check disk and file-system health
If Windows reports repeated corruption, files disappear again after repair, or other programs show unrelated errors, check the disk.
Back up important files first. Then open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
chkdsk /f C:
If the system volume is in use, Windows will ask whether to schedule the check for the next restart. Type Y, press Enter, and restart.
A failing drive requires manufacturer diagnostics or replacement planning. Disk repair cannot restore hardware that is failing, so protect your data before continuing.
Fix 7: Test startup and user-profile causes
If the message appears only when one program starts, identify that program before changing Windows files.
- Note the exact application or executable named in the error.
- Repair or reinstall that application using its official installer.
- Check whether the program has an update.
- If it is a game, use its launcher’s file verification only if the game actually ships its own copy of
MaintenanceUI.dll. - Do not assume that a game requesting the filename proves the file belongs to the game.
If the message appears only in one user profile, sign in with another administrator profile and test the same action. A profile-specific startup entry or corrupted per-user setting may be responsible. This is a diagnostic result, not evidence that maintenanceui.dll belongs in the user profile.
If the problem began immediately after a driver or software installation, System Restore may help:
- Press
Windows+R. - Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem.
- Review the affected programs.
- Complete the restore and restart.
System Restore can revert system files, registry settings, and installed programs without removing personal files. Microsoft documents the process in its System Restore guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix 8: Update drivers only when the evidence points there
A graphics or device driver is not the normal source of maintenanceui.dll, and reinstalling a driver should not be the first response. Consider it only if the error began with a broader device, display, or hardware-management failure.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
For a device that began failing after an update, open Properties, select the Driver tab, and review Roll Back Driver if available.
Manually hunting through hardware vendors and matching dozens of driver versions is easy to get wrong. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; the full version performs driver installation, but it is optional and unrelated to the definitive Windows component repair when maintenanceui.dll itself is damaged.
Why regsvr32 usually is not the answer

Public binary records indicate that MaintenanceUI.dll exposes registration-related exports, but that does not make registration a general repair procedure. Do not mass-register Windows DLLs.
Use regsvr32 only when a specific Microsoft-documented problem requires registration and the correct file has already been restored. Microsoft explains the utility in its regsvr32 documentation.
Final escalation: repair-install Windows
If DISM, SFC, Windows Update, and System Restore do not resolve the problem, perform an in-place repair installation.
On Windows 11, some systems provide:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now, if available.
- Follow the prompts.
This option is designed to preserve apps, files, and settings. Microsoft describes it in the Windows repair reinstall instructions.
For Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation media:
- Obtain installation media matching the installed edition and language from Microsoft.
- Start Windows normally.
- Open the media and run
setup.exe. - Choose Change what to keep.
- Select Keep personal files and apps.
- Continue with the repair installation.
Do not boot from the media when your goal is an in-place repair. Booting from it can lead to a clean installation path that removes applications and files. Microsoft’s installation-media instructions explain the difference.
FAQ
Is maintenanceui.dll malware?
The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows system DLL. A copy with an unexpected location, invalid signature, or unexplained origin deserves investigation. Use Windows Security and repair Windows rather than trusting the filename alone.
Is it a Visual C++ or DirectX file?
No. maintenanceui.dll belongs to the Windows Maintenance Settings Control Panel component. Reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is normally irrelevant.
Should I download maintenanceui.dll?
No. Random DLL sites may provide malware, the wrong Windows build, the wrong architecture, or a file that does not match the component store. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, matching Microsoft installation media, or an in-place repair.
Recommended Free Tools
Does maintenanceui.dll belong in a game folder?
There is no reason to treat it as a normal game dependency. If one application requests it, repair that application and investigate what executable is making the request, but repair Windows first.
What is the difference between System32 and SysWOW64?
On 64-bit Windows, System32 is the native 64-bit system directory and SysWOW64 supports 32-bit system binaries through WOW64. Do not swap files between them.
What if the error mentions MaintenanceUI.dll.mui?
That is a language-resource file, not the main DLL. Repair the Windows component with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC instead of copying a resource file from another computer.
Does Windows 11 include this exact file?
Windows component contents can vary by build, architecture, language, and servicing state. Do not rely on an old version list or assume one universal file version. Use the installed system’s own servicing tools to restore the correct component.
