Updating a jailbroken PS5 can remove access to the particular exploit you use, but an ordinary update is not automatically a permanent brick and does not necessarily erase every save. The result depends on the console’s exact firmware, the exploit’s supported range, and whether you choose Sony’s normal update, a Safe Mode reset, or a full system-software reinstallation. Before changing anything, record the installed version, check the exploit maintainer’s compatibility notes, and back up accessible data. Sony separately warns that modified consoles may fail to accept update data, that reinstalling deletes console data, and that unauthorized modification can affect service or warranty eligibility.
What happens to jailbreak access after a PS5 update?
The exploit may stop working when the console moves to firmware outside that exploit’s supported range. Compatibility is not universal: the Relapse maintainer’s README lists support for firmware 7.00 through 13.60, while Sony’s US release-history page listed 26.07-14.20.00 first and 26.06-14.10.00 immediately before it when checked on October 30, 2026. Those figures describe two specific sources, not a complete chart of every PS5 exploit or payload.

If the installed update is newer than the range documented for your exploit, assume that exploit access may be lost until its maintainers publish compatible support. That does not prove that every possible exploit fails on every later firmware. A payload, homebrew application, or entry point can have a narrower range than the exploit itself.
Installing newer official software can also change settings, remove functionality, or require updated applications. Sony’s license says system updates may include security changes intended to prevent unauthorized content or hardware. Applications and content may require a system update, so remaining on an older firmware can trade current compatibility for the possibility of retaining a supported exploit.

Is an update the same as a brick or a data wipe?
No. Three different events are often incorrectly called a “brick”: an exploit hang or panic, a failed official update, and an intentional system-software reinstallation. They have different symptoms and different recovery paths.
- Exploit hang or panic: the exploit itself can freeze or crash the console. That is not proof of permanent hardware damage.
- Failed update: the console may enter Safe Mode or repeatedly request an update. Sony provides repair, update, and reset choices for this state.
- Reinstallation: choosing Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) deliberately removes the system software and all user data. It is not equivalent to selecting Update System Software.
Sony warns that an altered console may operate improperly or refuse official update data. The available sources do not establish a universal hardware-brick rate, a jailbreak-specific update-failure rate, or proof that every trace of modification disappears after a reinstall.
What should you do before pressing Update?
Use the least irreversible plan that fits your priority: preserve a particular exploit, move to Sony’s current software, or recover a console that is already malfunctioning.
- Record the exact version. On a working console, note the complete system-software number shown in Settings. Then read the current compatibility documentation for the specific exploit, payloads, and homebrew you use. A supported range for one exploit does not certify other tools.
- Make a console backup while the home screen is available. Go to Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your PS5. Sony supports FAT32 and exFAT backup drives for this workflow. The drive format used for a PS5 USB extended-storage device is different and cannot be used directly for this backup.
- Understand what that backup contains. Sony says a console backup can include saved data, games and apps, captures, and settings. Games or apps installed on USB extended storage or an M.2 SSD are excluded from the backup, and trophies are excluded as well.
- Check cloud saves separately. PlayStation Plus cloud storage is not a substitute for the full console backup. Sony lists limits of 100 GB for PS5 saved data and 100 GB for PS4 saved data. Verify that the save for each important game has actually synchronized; membership alone does not prove that a particular save is in the cloud.
- Consider the automatic-update conflict. Sony says automatic cloud synchronization requires automatic updates to be enabled. Deliberately disabling automatic updates to avoid an unexpected firmware change can therefore interfere with automatic cloud syncing, so confirm uploads before changing that setting.
If the console can no longer reach the backup workflow, you cannot create a new USB console backup from it. An earlier backup or a previously synchronized save may be the only recoverable copy.

Which Safe Mode option should you choose?
Safe Mode choices have materially different consequences. Start with the non-erasing option that addresses the symptom, and reserve a reset or reinstallation for cases that require it.
| Safe Mode choice | What it does | Data consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Restart PS5 | Leaves Safe Mode and attempts a normal boot. | Does not intentionally erase user data. |
| Repair Console Storage | Checks and repairs console-storage problems. | Non-erasing according to Sony’s Safe Mode guide. |
| Clear Cache and Rebuild Database | Clears temporary cache or rebuilds the content database. | Not presented by Sony as a user-data reset. |
| Update System Software | Installs an official update through the available update method. | Different from a reinstall; do not treat it as a wipe. |
| Restore Default Settings | Returns settings to defaults. | Sony says stored games, apps, captures, and saves remain. |
| Reset PS5 | Resets the console to its factory state. | Deletes user data. |
| Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) | Removes the system software and installs it again. | Deletes user data and removes the installed system software. |
If a download appears stuck while the home screen still loads, inspect it under Downloads/Uploads and retry from there before escalating to a reset. Back up anything accessible before selecting an option that deletes data.
How do you install an official update from USB?
Use this procedure when Sony’s normal update path is unavailable or the console specifically requests a USB update. The file must come from Sony’s official system-software support page; an unofficial package can make the failure worse.
- On a computer, format a USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT. Sony’s manual-update instructions specify approximately 1.1 GB of free space for the update procedure.
- Create the folders
PS5/UPDATEin the root of the drive. - Download Sony’s update file and save it in that folder with the exact uppercase filename
PS5UPDATE.PUP. Do not rename a reinstallation file as an update file. - Turn the PS5 completely off. Press and hold the power button until the second beep to enter Safe Mode.
- Connect the controller to the console with a USB cable and press the PS button.
- Select Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device.
If Safe Mode does not recognize the file, check the drive format, the spelling and capitalization of both folder names, the exact filename, and that the file is in PS5/UPDATE rather than an extra nested folder. A USB drive used for this update does not preserve jailbreak capability by itself; compatibility still depends on the installed firmware and exploit.

When should you use a full system-software reinstallation?
Use reinstallation only when ordinary updating, storage repair, or a less destructive Safe Mode choice cannot recover the console. Sony provides a separate reinstallation download and a separate Safe Mode command.
- Format a USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT and ensure approximately 1.2 GB of free space, as Sony specifies for the reinstallation procedure.
- Create
PS5/UPDATEat the root of the drive. - Download Sony’s separate reinstallation file and save it as
PS5UPDATE.PUP. - Start Safe Mode by holding the power button until the second beep, connect the controller by USB, and choose Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software).
- Confirm only after checking that any accessible saves and captures have been backed up.
Sony states that reinstalling the system software deletes all data on the PS5. If the reinstallation fails, Sony directs users to its repair process rather than to an unofficial firmware source.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Afterward, restoring a USB console backup requires the installed system software to be the same version or newer than the version used to create that backup. Restoration itself erases data currently on the console, and Console Sharing and Offline Play must be enabled again afterward.
Can you downgrade to recover the previous jailbreak?
Do not treat a USB reinstall as a supported downgrade method. Sony’s US PS5 license prohibits reinstalling earlier system-software versions and obtaining firmware outside Sony’s authorized distribution methods. An independent tool author’s claim that an older-version installation method exists is not Sony-endorsed recovery guidance and is not a tested guarantee.

There is no responsible basis to promise that a downgrade will work, that it will restore the same exploit state, or that it will leave user data intact. If preserving exploit access matters more than newer software compatibility, the decision has to be made before updating, while the console is still on a documented supported version.

Sony says modification or unofficial updating can cause improper operation, refusal of official update data, and consequences for warranty or repair services. Its support rules allow account suspension for violations, with serious breaches potentially leading to console suspension. An account suspension and a console suspension restrict different PlayStation features.

How should you choose between keeping the exploit and updating?
Make the choice using four trade-offs rather than assuming one outcome:

- Data protection: a reachable home screen allows a USB backup and save verification; a reinstall erases unbacked-up data.
- Online services: account-dependent features may require current software and remain subject to Sony’s suspension rules.
If the console is working and the exploit is important, stop automatic updates, verify backups and compatibility information, and make the decision before downloading new firmware. If the console is already in Safe Mode, try Restart PS5, Repair Console Storage, or the appropriate update option before choosing a data-erasing reset. If recovery requires reinstallation, treat the console as a clean data-loss event and restore only from verified backups.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I create a USB backup after the PS5 has already entered Safe Mode?
Sony’s console-backup workflow is launched from the normal Settings menus, so a console that cannot reach those menus cannot make a new USB backup through that process. Use an earlier console backup or any save that was already synchronized before the failure.
Recommended Free Tools
Are the PS5 and PS4 cloud-save limits one shared 100 GB allowance?
Sony lists 100 GB for PS5 saved data and a separate 100 GB for PS4 saved data. These are storage limits, not a promise that every game save has uploaded or that a suspended account can access the cloud.
Why does Sony provide separate update and reinstallation downloads?
They perform different operations. The update file is for updating system software, while the reinstallation file is used with Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software), which removes the installed software and deletes console data.
Does restoring a backup bring back the jailbreak?
A console backup restores supported user content and settings; it does not certify exploit compatibility for the firmware currently installed. Whether jailbreak access returns depends on the firmware and the specific exploit, not on the backup file alone.
