Yes—but only on a PS5 that can run homebrew. The PS5SX2 emulator is a native port of PCSX2 for jailbroken consoles, and its recent physical-media workflow can dump an original PS2 disc to storage and launch the resulting game. Sony’s internal drive reads silver-bottom DVD-based PS2 discs; blue-bottom CD-based discs need a USB optical drive. You also need a PS2 BIOS dumped from a console you own and your own game media. This is not a feature of an ordinary retail PS5, and the emulator does not include BIOS files, games or encryption keys.
What is PS5SX2?
PS5SX2 is a native PS5 port of the open-source PCSX2 emulator. It runs on a jailbroken console, using PCSX2 recompilers for the PS5’s CPU and a modified Vulkan graphics stack for its GPU. Can a jailbroken PS5 play an original PS2 disc?
It can. In the current workflow, you insert an original disc, PS5SX2 dumps it if a copy is not already present, and then launches the game from that image. The project’s release notes and coverage of version 2.01 describe this copy-and-launch path; direct reading without first making a stored image remains experimental in the main project.

Will my blue PS2 disc work in the PS5?

The same CD limitation applies to the PS5’s internal laser regardless of whether the console is the disc-equipped model. A USB DVD drive is therefore also the documented route for the Digital Edition, which has no internal optical drive. USB optical-drive support is described as experimental in some coverage, so compatibility can vary by drive and software build.
What do I need before installing it?
The upstream project lists four practical prerequisites, in addition to a compatible PS5 and legally obtained media:
- A jailbroken PS5. Jailbreak availability changes with firmware, so this is not a promise that every retail console can currently be modified.
- The PS5SX2 Helper payload loaded with kstuff.
- ShadowMountPlus to mount the application and place it on the PS5 home screen.
- A PS2 BIOS dumped from a console you own, plus your own PS2 discs or disc images.
PS5SX2 supplies none of the BIOS files, games or keys. The project documentation also does not provide jailbreak instructions, firmware exploits or game downloads. Use of copied media and BIOS files is subject to the law in your country; the documented workflow assumes you supply material you are entitled to use.
How does the physical-disc workflow work?
The exact menus can change as builds evolve, but the documented process follows this sequence:
- Prepare the jailbroken PS5 and load the PS5SX2 Helper payload with kstuff.
- Use ShadowMountPlus to mount PS5SX2 and add it to the home screen.
- Place your dumped PS2 BIOS where the emulator’s BIOS settings can find it.
- Insert a silver-bottom DVD PS2 disc into the internal drive, or connect a USB DVD drive for a blue-bottom CD disc or a Digital Edition console.
- Open PS5SX2 or the 5S2CD shelf. Select the disc tile and choose the dump/copy action when no image exists.
- After the image is created, launch it from storage. Configure resolution, widescreen, frame-rate patches, memory cards and other options through the emulator’s settings.
5S2CD is designed to make the disc appear as a home-screen-style tile. The upstream app’s direct-disc option is less mature, so copying first is the more clearly documented route.
How compatible and fast are PS2 games?
There is useful evidence, but it is self-reported and should not be treated as a guarantee for every title. The project’s 2026 telemetry covered sessions reported after version 2.10:

The README explicitly warns that the table is not a compatibility guarantee. Performance can change with the console, firmware, emulator settings and later builds. PS5 Pro offers more resolution headroom according to the project’s rendering targets, but that does not make every game bug-free or full-speed.
When judging a title, separate the disc question from the emulation question: a readable DVD or a successfully dumped CD only proves that the media can be supplied. The game may still have rendering glitches, audio problems, timing issues or a need for a per-game patch.
Can the PS5 also emulate PS3 discs?
Not as a generally downloadable feature covered here. Swordpdf, the developer associated with PS5SX2, has shown a PS5SX3 or related PS3-disc project, but coverage characterized the footage as an early alpha proof of concept that was not publicly released in this timeframe. Treat PS3-disc support as a development direction, not as part of the available PS2 workflow.

- Jailbreak dependency: a retail PS5 cannot simply install PS5SX2, and firmware exploit support changes over time.
- Optical formats: the internal drive reads DVD-based PS2 discs, not CD-based blue-bottom discs.
