Jeff Kaplan says leaving Blizzard stripped away the institutional status that once made his calls and emails matter. In a GameSpot interview, the former Overwatch director said, “I have many people in the industry who won’t return my emails, who won’t even give me the time of day.” He describes that loss of access as humbling, but also as part of a deliberate creative reset. Kaplan is now leading the 33-person independent studio Kintsugiyama, which is developing The Legend of California, a multiplayer action-survival shooter planned for Early Access in 2026.
Why are people ignoring Jeff Kaplan’s emails now?
Kaplan’s explanation is that the influence attached to his Blizzard role did not follow him out the door. While working on World of Warcraft and Overwatch, he operated inside one of the industry’s most powerful game companies, with major franchises, large teams and substantial resources behind him. After leaving, he found that some contacts who had been accessible no longer responded.

He characterized the experience as a lesson in status and access: relationships that looked personal may have been connected to the company, the games or the opportunities surrounding his position. Kaplan said the change was “humbling” because an independent founder has to earn attention without Blizzard’s institutional weight.
What happened to Jeff Kaplan after Overwatch?
Kaplan intentionally stepped away from the public conversation around his former game. He says he has not played Overwatch since April 2021 and avoids its subreddits, videos and search results. That distance marks a cleaner break than a typical executive transition. Instead of remaining a public commentator on Overwatch, Kaplan redirected his effort toward a new studio and an original setting, accepting the uncertainty that comes with starting without an established franchise.

How big is Jeff Kaplan’s new studio?
Kintsugiyama has 33 team members, according to Kaplan. The studio’s site describes it as small and developer-led, and says the team had been working on The Legend of California for four years as of 2026.
Kaplan still expects a high standard of craft and attention to detail. He also acknowledges that 33 people cannot match Blizzard or Microsoft in staffing, budget or production scope. The practical result is a more exposed decision-making process: founders make choices directly, and there is less corporate structure to absorb the consequences when those choices fail.

What does Kaplan mean by a “reset”?
Kaplan presents the smaller studio as creatively useful rather than merely a downgrade. Without layers of management, the team has to decide what to build, what to cut and where to spend its limited time. He says that responsibility restores a sense of hunger and urgency, because the people making the decisions also live with the results.

His financial philosophy is straightforward: “the best way to make money is to make a really great game.” He says Kintsugiyama has a responsibility to its employees, but argues that concentrating on quality is the most reliable route to sustainable revenue. No final price or monetization model has been announced, so the quality-first statement should not be read as a published business model.
When can I play The Legend of California?
Dreamhaven announced Kintsugiyama as a partner studio on March 12, 2026, and said the game is planned for Early Access in 2026 on Steam and the Epic Games Store. The announcement does not provide a final launch date, price or monetization details.
Kintsugiyama’s testing updates show an active development process. An April 2, 2026 Alpha recap reported an average of nine hours played per Alpha tester, with 69% of invitations coming directly through Steam sign-up. After internal stress testing found that the original concurrency goals were too ambitious, the team reduced the Alpha cap to 45 players per server to improve stability.

The same update said development priorities included client and server performance, graphics, physics, bug fixing and polish. The official updates index lists Alpha 5 for November 12–18, 2026; previous Alpha participants are automatically included, while additional players can be invited through Steam sign-ups.
How can players follow the game or join testing?
- Wishlist the game on Steam. This is the clearest way to receive storefront updates as the Early Access window approaches.
- Watch Kintsugiyama’s official updates. Alpha dates and invitations can change as server and client work continues.
- Sign up through Steam. The April Alpha recap indicates that Steam registration was the primary route for most invitations.
- Check eligibility for future Alphas. Participants from earlier tests are automatically included for Alpha 5, while new sign-ups may be invited as capacity allows.
Kintsugiyama also provides a creator sign-up for people producing coverage. The studio has not published a final storefront price, physical edition or complete monetization plan.

His account is less a claim that every former colleague rejected him than an observation about how quickly professional access can change. The same résumé that carried enormous visibility inside Blizzard has less practical force when detached from that company’s brands, budget and network. Kaplan’s indie phase therefore tests a different skill: turning a small team, a new setting and limited resources into a game players want.

The Legend of California will show whether that reset produces a sustainable project. For now, the confirmed picture is a 33-person studio, a four-year development effort, measurable Alpha participation and a planned 2026 Early Access release—alongside a founder openly confronting how different independent development feels from directing a global franchise.
