If Windows says “The program can’t start because joliet.dll is missing from your computer” or reports that the file was not found, repair the application that requested it rather than downloading a random DLL. Available references associate joliet.dll with legacy software, especially Roxio Easy CD Creator, while another catalog lists the same filename for Riverdeep’s 101 Greatest XP Apps & Utilities 2003. That means the filename does not identify one universal Windows component or one safe replacement. First capture the complete error and identify the parent program. Then repair, update, reinstall or remove that program using its original installer. What is joliet.dll, and is it a Windows system file?

Run the product’s repair option
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (Windows 11) or Settings > Apps > Apps & features (Windows 10).
- Select the application that matches the executable from the error. If an Advanced options page offers Repair or the classic Control Panel entry offers Change, choose that option.
- Allow the original maintenance program to complete, then restart Windows and test the application again.
Not every legacy program exposes a modern Repair button. If no repair option exists, use the original installer to reinstall the same product version. Avoid mixing files from separate releases or from a different application that happens to use the same filename.

If the publisher provides a patch or a complete installer for your edition, verify the product name, release and system architecture before running it. Use DISM RestoreHealth

Run System File Checker

Microsoft documents this DISM/SFC workflow for component-store problems such as 0x800F081F and 0x800F0831. If the only symptom is a legacy application’s joliet.dll message, an apparently successful DISM or SFC run does not prove that the application has been repaired.
When should I use Windows installation media?
Official installation media is a recovery fallback for Windows installation damage, not a source for an application-specific DLL. - Back up files before reinstalling. Match the installed edition, language and processor architecture when selecting media.
- Use the resulting USB, DVD or ISO only after application repair and Windows component checks have failed or Windows itself cannot start correctly.
Create Windows 10 media
- Use the Windows 10 media page’s Media Creation Tool or ISO option. The documented workflow supports a blank USB drive of at least 8 GB or suitable DVD media.
- Back up personal files and confirm the edition, language and architecture before an in-place repair or clean installation.
- Remember that Windows 10 reached the end of its free update, support and security-fix period on October 14, 2025. Installation media can restore the operating system, but it does not extend that support period.
An in-place repair or reinstall can affect applications and settings, while a clean installation can erase the system volume. Read each confirmation screen and keep a separate backup before proceeding.
Is a USB drive or DVD better for Windows recovery media?
USB is usually the practical choice because most current PCs boot from USB and the creation process is faster. DVD remains useful when the computer has a working optical drive and you already have suitable blank media.

Why is downloading joliet.dll from a random website risky?

Do not make the common mistake of copying the file into both C:WindowsSystem32 and C:WindowsSysWOW64. That can create version conflicts and makes later troubleshooting harder. Keep the file inside the application’s installation directory when the original installer places it there, and retain the installer as your recovery source.

Choose the layer that matches the evidence instead of trying every command in sequence.

What if the error continues after reinstalling the application?
Check whether the error is coming from the same executable. If a different program now reports the filename, you may be dealing with a second legacy product that uses its own copy. Return to the identification step rather than copying the first file you find.

- Remove remnants of the failed installation only through the product’s uninstaller or the vendor’s documented cleanup process.
- Reinstall the exact edition and architecture that the application supports.
- Run DISM and SFC only if Windows also shows system-integrity symptoms.
- If the software is discontinued and no compatible installer exists, consider replacing the workflow with a currently supported application rather than weakening Windows security to run an unmaintained component.
No live compatibility test can establish which DLL version your computer needs without the complete dialog, parent executable, installed-program details and architecture. Those details should be supplied to the software publisher or a qualified technician when the original installer cannot be located.
Is joliet.dll malware?
The filename alone cannot establish that it is malicious or legitimate.
