For most new websites in 2026, choose WordPress if you need the largest pool of developers, agencies, tutorials, themes and extensions. Choose Joomla when its structured administration, granular permission model or an existing Joomla codebase is more important than ecosystem size. Neither platform is automatically easier or safer: the right choice depends on your content model, editorial workflow, hosting stack, extension discipline and migration cost.
For a video-game site, that usually means WordPress for a fast-moving editorial publication, review database or community-facing news site, and Joomla for a site with complex member roles, tightly separated publishing responsibilities or a substantial Joomla installation you already operate.

Joomla remains an actively maintained platform
Joomla’s documentation recommends using the latest version for a new site unless you have a specific reason not to. The project announced Joomla 6.1.1 and 5.4.6 as security and bug-fix releases. Joomla 5.4.x is scheduled to receive security patches through 12 October 2027. That support window can matter when a games site must preserve a long-lived archive or a public-sector-style approval process.

Joomla 6 is not an abandoned legacy system, but it does impose a modern server baseline. Confirm those requirements with your host before designing the site, especially if you are taking over inexpensive or old infrastructure.
WordPress 7.1.1 demonstrates active security maintenance
WordPress.org records WordPress 7.1.1 as released on 17 September 2026. The release included 17 core bug fixes, 21 Block Editor fixes and 11 security fixes, and the project recommends updating immediately because it is a security release. Only the most recent WordPress version is actively supported, although fixes were also made available to several older branches in that release.
Patch numbers and support statements can change. Recheck the official release pages immediately before launch or a major upgrade, then verify that every plugin, theme and integration supports the target version.
Market size and what it means for a gaming publisher
A W3Techs report from October 2024 measured WordPress at a substantially larger share than Joomla: Joomla was listed at 1.13% of all websites and 1.6% of websites whose CMS was identified. Those figures are historical context, not live 2026 telemetry. A larger installed base generally makes it easier to find tutorials, freelancers, agencies and ready-made integrations. It does not prove that WordPress will model your data or approval rules better.
A smaller share does not mean Joomla is unmaintained. It means you should budget more carefully for specialist expertise, extension evaluation and succession planning if your team currently depends on one Joomla developer.

Model the content before choosing a dashboard
WordPress works well for publication-shaped content
A games publication commonly has posts for news, reviews, previews, interviews, features and buying guides; taxonomies for platform, genre, franchise and release year; author pages; and media-heavy posts. WordPress’s familiar post-and-block workflow lets editors compose those pages quickly, while custom post types and fields can separate a review score, tested platform, playtime and update history from the article body.
The trade-off is governance. A large plugin estate can create overlapping fields, inconsistent templates and compatibility work. Decide who owns the canonical taxonomy, which blocks are approved, and how an editor can update an old review without changing its displayed score accidentally.

Joomla is attractive when the site is more than a stream of articles. You might need distinct access for news writers, review editors, freelance contributors, moderators, translators and commercial staff; category trees with different publishing rules; or menus and modules assembled independently from article content. Joomla’s administration and permission design can represent those boundaries directly.
That structure has a learning cost. New contributors may need training on categories, menus, modules and access levels before they can publish confidently. Create a staging site and a short editorial handbook rather than assuming that a technically powerful back end will be self-explanatory.
Editors, reviewers and community contributors
Questions to test in a real editorial trial
- Create a news post with a hero image, embedded video and game-platform tags.
- Save it as a draft for an editor, request changes, and publish it at a scheduled time.
- Update a published review while preserving its original publication date and displaying a clear revision note.
- Give a freelancer access only to assigned categories and media, then revoke that access.
- Translate or localize one article without breaking canonical URLs, menus or structured data.
Run the same script in both systems with the actual template and extensions. Count clicks, permission errors and manual work, not just how quickly a developer can build a demo.

Block editing versus module and menu composition
WordPress’s block editor is a natural fit for editors who think in page sections: headline, deck, gallery, quote, video and callout. Joomla’s model can be advantageous when navigation, modules and access-controlled regions must be managed separately from article text. A site with a persistent “latest releases” rail, platform-specific menus and member-only review notes should prototype those pieces rather than judging from a blank installation.

WordPress offers breadth, with a management burden
The larger WordPress ecosystem supplies more choices for SEO, forms, newsletters, memberships, analytics, ecommerce and gaming-specific presentation. Breadth also increases the chance of duplicated features, abandoned plugins, conflicting scripts or extensions that are not ready for a new core release. Select fewer components, check the maintainer’s update history, read the declared PHP and WordPress compatibility, and test updates on staging.
Joomla offers a smaller pool that rewards deliberate selection
Joomla extensions and templates can cover the same broad categories, but the available pool and hiring market are smaller. Confirm that an extension supports Joomla 6, your database, multilingual needs and the permission scheme you intend to use. Do not assume that a Joomla 5 extension will work unchanged on Joomla 6; obtain a vendor compatibility statement and test an upgrade copy.
Do not confuse a theme or template with the CMS
A template determines much of the visual presentation, but it cannot repair an unsuitable content model or an unmaintained extension. Build a content inventory first, then choose a template that exposes the fields, navigation and accessibility features your readers need. For a game site, test keyboard navigation, heading order, contrast, captions for trailers and usable image alternatives on both mobile and desktop.
Hosting and technical requirements
WordPress runs on a wide range of hosts, but “WordPress hosting” is not a guarantee of a suitable environment. Check the PHP version, database engine, object and page caching, backup retention, staging workflow, command-line access and whether the host permits the plugins you need. A cheap plan that cannot restore a database or test updates is a false economy.

Required PHP modules include json, simplexml, dom, zlib, gd and the appropriate MySQL or PostgreSQL driver. Ask the host for exact versions rather than relying on a generic control-panel label. Confirm that automated backups include files and databases, that restores can be rehearsed, and that staging uses a password or access restriction while it contains unpublished material.
Security is an operating process, not a product attribute
What the release records show
WordPress 7.1.1’s 11 security fixes show active core maintenance. Joomla’s guidance is equally direct: use current releases and upgrade promptly when a security release is published. These facts do not make either CMS inherently secure. Your exposure also depends on extension quality, administrator accounts, hosting isolation, backups, monitoring and how quickly your team can apply a fix.
A practical security baseline for either CMS
- Maintain a written inventory of core, extensions, templates, PHP and database versions.
- Use individual administrator accounts, least privilege and multi-factor authentication where available.
- Test updates on a private staging copy before production, but do not postpone urgent security fixes indefinitely.
- Keep encrypted, off-site backups and perform a restore rehearsal on a schedule.
- Monitor failed logins, unexpected administrator changes, file modifications and unusual outbound requests.
- Remove abandoned extensions and unused administrator accounts instead of leaving them dormant.
- Document who approves emergency updates and who verifies that publishing, search, media and forms still work afterward.
Accessibility, performance and discoverability
Neither CMS guarantees accessible markup or fast pages. The template, block or module choices, image handling, advertising scripts, video embeds and caching configuration determine the result. Establish acceptance tests before selecting extensions: keyboard-only navigation, visible focus, logical headings, captions, alt text, readable contrast, responsive layouts and meaningful error messages.
For a media-heavy gaming site, resize and compress screenshots, defer nonessential scripts, provide poster images for trailers and test pages on a throttled mobile connection. Compare the same article and gallery in both CMSs with the same hosting tier; otherwise you are measuring different implementations rather than platforms.

Migration: the cost many comparisons ignore
Moving from Joomla to WordPress
Inventory Joomla articles, categories, menus, modules, users, access levels, custom fields, media paths, redirects and extension-generated data. Map each item to a WordPress post type, taxonomy, field, role or block before importing anything. Export a representative sample, rebuild templates, preserve canonical URLs where possible and create one-to-one redirects for changed paths. Recheck permissions because Joomla access levels and WordPress roles are not interchangeable.
Moving from WordPress to Joomla
Identify custom post types, taxonomies, block content, shortcodes, user roles, memberships, comments and plugin-owned tables. Decide which content belongs in Joomla categories, fields, modules or components. Replace shortcodes with stable markup or Joomla-native fields, then validate media URLs, feeds, search, navigation and structured metadata. Preserve author attribution and revision history where the target system supports it, and document anything that cannot be transferred exactly.
When not to migrate
If an existing site publishes reliably, receives security updates, and its extensions are maintained, a migration motivated only by popularity may cost more than it returns. Price the staff time for mapping, redesign, redirects, testing, training and a rollback period. A new site has no legacy penalty, so the ecosystem and hiring advantage of WordPress usually carries more weight there.

- Describe the content model. List article types, taxonomies, custom fields, languages, media formats, memberships and any data that must be queried or filtered.
- Map the workflow. Name every role from freelancer to managing editor, define approval steps, and test a correction to an already published review.
- Build a five-page prototype in each CMS. Include a news post, review, database-style game page, video gallery and restricted page using production-like content.
- Verify extensions. Record maintainer, latest compatible release, update history, license, support route and what happens if the extension is removed.
- Verify hosting. Check versions, required PHP modules, staging, backups, restore access, caching and support for your chosen database.
- Measure operations. Time a routine update, rollback, new-user setup, media replacement and redirect creation. Record where a nontechnical editor gets stuck.
- Price migration and exit. Estimate URL mapping, data cleanup, training and a rollback window. Keep exports and documentation in a format another team can use.
- Choose the platform whose failure modes your team can handle. Ecosystem size matters, but operational competence matters more.
Recommendations by common 2026 scenario
Launching a new games-news publication
WordPress is the default choice when speed to publish, recruiting editors and finding integrations are the main constraints. Keep the plugin set small, define an editorial style guide and make staging mandatory before adding monetization or community features.
Building a structured game database with several departments
Joomla deserves serious consideration when the site needs explicit access boundaries, separate menus and modules, and a controlled extension set. Confirm Joomla 6 hosting requirements and train administrators before launch.
Taking over an established Joomla site
Stay on Joomla if the current content model and extensions are maintained and the team can meet the release and backup process. Replatform only after a migration prototype proves that URLs, permissions and data can be preserved at an acceptable cost.
Taking over an established WordPress site
Stay on WordPress when the existing theme and plugins are maintained and the site can be brought under disciplined update, backup and access controls. A clean-up and staged replacement of risky extensions is often less disruptive than a CMS switch.

In 2026, WordPress is the safer general-purpose starting point for most new gaming websites because its measured web presence supports a larger ecosystem and talent pool. Joomla remains a credible, actively maintained choice when structured administration, granular permissions or an existing Joomla investment is central to the project. Make the final call from a working prototype, verified hosting and a written maintenance plan—not from popularity alone.
