They are real performers filmed in handmade, physical costumes. Jouffret says the team creates the look first, fits it to a dancer who can embody the role and then records the routine on a green-screen stage. The finished footage is composited into the game as the coach players follow.
Jouffret has studied fashion, previously worked as a stylist and has overseen costumes and characters for eight years. His description is notably specific: the team listens to the song, watches its music video and decides whether the visual idea should connect to the recording artist or move in another direction.

Does Just Dance: Decades of Hits use AI for its character designs?
Jouffret’s stated position is that the character work is made by people: “We are really loving what we do. It’s our art. It’s what we love.” He also says the designers are proud of “working, sketching ourselves, creating what is in our minds and making real costumes with real costume makers.”
That is a claim about the creative practice described in the costume interview, not a blanket technical certification for the entire game. Digital compositing, editing, animation tools and other software can still be part of turning filmed performances into an interactive product. The anti-AI point is that the costumes and character concepts begin with human sketches, decisions, craft specialists and dancers rather than an AI-generated character pipeline.
How does a song become a character and dance map?
The team builds each map by connecting music, character direction, setting and choreography. Jouffret says the designers consider whether community and hardcore players will want a visible connection to the singer, then add references or Easter eggs when that relationship matters. 2. Decide the cast size and character type
A routine may use one performer, a duo, a trio or as many as 10 characters. The team chooses whether the role calls for a casual costume, an alien, a mascot or a nonbinary character, among other possibilities.
3. Build mood boards and sketches
Mood boards draw on films, music videos and other media. After sketches are reviewed and approved, the design team looks for a dancer whose movement, presence and physical fit match both the character and the choreographer’s vision.
4. Make, fit and film
Costume specialists—including people experienced with mascots, corsets and casual wear—turn the approved design into something a dancer can safely perform in. The completed look is filmed against green screen before the footage is integrated into the map.
