What is Kaiju No. 8: The Game?
KAIJU NO. 8 THE GAME is the first official game adaptation of the Kaiju No. 8 franchise. Akatsuki Games develops, operates and publishes the game, with TOHO and Production I.G credited for cooperation. The original Japanese announcement marked the project title as tentative; the released game is titled KAIJU NO. 8 THE GAME. The anime’s official site announced the project on June 15, 2024, alongside its first trailer and key visual.
The game retells Kafka Hibino’s story and adds original narrative content. Its source material is Naoya Matsumoto’s manga, but reading the manga is not a prerequisite for playing.
When did the game come out?
The overall service began on August 31, 2025, at 01:00 UTC, which was August 31 in Japan Standard Time (JST). Akatsuki Games had announced August 31, 2025 (JST) as the planned start date. Steam separately lists September 30, 2025 as the PC version’s release date; that storefront date does not replace the earlier overall service start.

The game’s official launch notice, updated August 5, 2026, reports more than one million worldwide pre-registrations.
How does the gameplay work?
Akatsuki describes the game as a turn-based Kaiju-slaying battle RPG. Players select skills for Defense Force officers and can unleash ultimate attacks when a Kaiju’s core is exposed. The developer’s April 2025 announcement highlighted cinematic ultimate moves and detailed Kaiju models, while noting that the game was still in development and details could change. The game combines the anime’s story with exclusive original narratives. The developer described the anime as based on Matsumoto’s manga, which offers an optional way to explore the source story.
What platforms is it on, and what does it cost?
Akatsuki lists iOS, Android and Steam as platforms. The game is free to play, with in-game purchases; a boxed purchase is not required. Steam’s version is for Windows PC. Its listed minimum requirements are Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit), 8 GB of RAM, 20 GB of available storage and a GeForce GTX 1650 or higher. Steam lists a GeForce GTX 1070 or higher as the recommended graphics card. Check the Steam store page for current requirements, which may change.

What did the first trailer reveal?
The June 2024 trailer and key visual introduced the game project. More detailed gameplay information followed in April 2025, when Akatsuki opened global pre-registration outside Mainland China and released a kickoff trailer. At that time, the developer listed Japanese, English, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Korean and French as supported languages; availability and language support can vary by platform or change over time.
Akatsuki’s April announcement described the title as a turn-based RPG that pairs Kafka’s story with an original storyline. The game’s official announcement also cited more than 18 million manga copies in circulation in Japan and more than 700 million total views on Shonen Jump+ as of April 2025.
