kbdic.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component called Icelandic Keyboard Layout. If Windows or an application reports that kbdic.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

What is kbdic.dll

kbdic.dll is a keyboard-layout module supplied with the Microsoft Windows Operating System. It supports the Icelandic keyboard layout, whose Windows keyboard identifier is 0000040F.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Windows loads keyboard-layout DLLs through its window manager when an applicable input layout is installed or requested. That is why an English-language Windows installation can still contain or load kbdic.dll: installed language and keyboard components do not always match the display language you use every day.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft identifies Icelandic as a supported Windows keyboard layout in its Icelandic keyboard documentation. Microsoft’s keyboard-layout sample documentation also explains how Windows uses layout DLLs.

File identification

Property Verified information
File name kbdic.dll
Description Icelandic Keyboard Layout
Internal name kbdic
Original filename kbdic.dll
Publisher Microsoft Corporation
Product Microsoft Windows Operating System
Keyboard identifier 0000040F
File category Microsoft Windows component

The file is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX library, .NET assembly, game-middleware file, or ordinary hardware driver. There is no sound reason to install a Visual C++ redistributable merely because an error mentions kbdic.dll.

Errors associated with kbdic.dll

You may see wording such as:

The program can't start because kbdic.dll was not found.
The program can't start because kbdic.dll is missing from your computer.
The code execution cannot proceed because kbdic.dll was not found.
Error loading kbdic.dll. The specified module could not be found.
kbdic.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.
The file kbdic.dll is missing or corrupted.

These are representative Windows loader messages rather than a guaranteed list of messages generated specifically by this file.

“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that kbdic.dll itself is absent. Windows may also be unable to load a dependency, may be using an incompatible copy, or may be unable to load the file because it is damaged.

Before repairing anything, note:

  • The complete error text
  • The name of the program that displayed it
  • Whether the error appears during sign-in, startup, or keyboard switching
  • Whether all applications are affected or only one
  • Whether Icelandic appears under your installed keyboard layouts
  • Whether the problem began after Windows Update, language changes, cleanup software, antivirus action, or malware removal
  • Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit

That information determines whether the problem is system-wide or limited to one application.

Do not download kbdic.dll manually

Avoid downloading kbdic.dll from a random DLL download website and copying it into System32, SysWOW64, an application folder, or a game folder.

A downloaded DLL may be:

  • Modified or malicious
  • Missing a valid Microsoft signature
  • From a different Windows build
  • The wrong architecture
  • Incompatible with Windows servicing
  • Unable to repair the underlying component-store problem

A copied file can also conceal a malware infection or cause the same error to return after the next update. The supported sources for this component are Windows Update, Windows servicing tools, Windows recovery, and official Windows installation media.

Do not confuse kbdic.dll with kbdic.exe. Those are separate files. An executable with a similar name should be investigated independently and should not be treated as evidence that the Microsoft keyboard-layout DLL is malicious.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart

A pending update may contain the correct Windows component or repair files that are currently inconsistent.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. In Windows 11, open Windows Update.
  4. In Windows 10, open Update & Security, then Windows Update.
  5. Select Check for updates.
  6. Install all available updates.
  7. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  8. Test the keyboard input or start the application again.

If the error disappears, the missing component was likely restored or the servicing operation completed successfully.

If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC. Do not skip DISM when SFC reports that it could not repair files.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

This is the primary repair for a missing or corrupted Windows component. DISM repairs the Windows component source that SFC uses, and SFC checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies.

Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.

The command uses the currently running Windows installation and repairs its component store. Completion can take time, and the progress percentage may appear to pause.

After DISM completes successfully, run SFC in the same administrator Command Prompt:

sfc /scannow

Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and test the affected program or keyboard layout.

Microsoft documents this sequence in its System File Checker guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, restart before testing. When it reports that it did not find any integrity violations, the problem may be an application-specific installation issue, a dependency problem, or a counterfeit file outside the normal Windows component paths.

Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work of hunting through repair results and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair requires the full version.

If DISM fails

If DISM cannot complete:

  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Install pending updates.
  3. Open an elevated Command Prompt again.
  4. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. After it completes, run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart and test again.

If SFC says it could not repair some files, do not take ownership of protected Windows files or replace them manually. Continue to the Windows repair-reinstall options below.

Fix 3: Check the installed keyboard layouts

An incomplete language or keyboard-layout installation can leave Windows with inconsistent input components.

  2. Select Time & language.
  3. Select Language & region.
  4. Review the languages under Preferred languages.
  5. Select the language associated with the keyboard you use.
  6. Select the three-dot menu and choose Language options.
  7. Review the installed keyboards.
  8. If an unwanted Icelandic keyboard is present, select it and choose Remove.
  9. If you need the Icelandic layout, select Add a keyboard and add it again.
  10. Restart Windows.

Windows 10

  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. Select Time & Language.
  3. Select Language.
  4. Choose the installed language.
  5. Select Options.
  6. Review the Keyboards section.
  7. Remove the affected layout, or add it again if it is required.
  8. Restart Windows.

Microsoft explains these settings in its guide to managing language and keyboard input layouts.

Removing Icelandic is not required merely because you use English. The presence of an Icelandic layout does not prove that you intentionally installed it. It may have remained after a language-pack change or Windows servicing operation.

If removing and re-adding a layout fixes the issue, test keyboard switching in more than one application. If the error affects Windows itself or appears before an application opens, return to DISM and SFC rather than repeatedly changing layouts.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine

Windows Security or another antivirus product may have quarantined a legitimate system file. It may also have detected a counterfeit file using the same name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In Windows Security:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open the application.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Review recent detections.
  7. Look for an entry involving kbdic.dll.
  8. Inspect the detected file’s path and details.
  9. Run a scan before restoring anything.

Do not restore a file solely because its name is kbdic.dll. Confirm that it is located in an expected Windows component path, has a valid Microsoft digital signature, and is not accompanied by suspicious startup activity.

Microsoft’s Protection History documentation explains how quarantined detections work. Microsoft also warns that restoring a detected file can cause Defender to detect it again unless the user deliberately allows it.

If the file is missing after quarantine, use DISM and SFC to restore the protected Windows component instead of downloading a replacement. If the file is outside an expected Windows location or lacks a Microsoft signature, run a full scan and consider an offline scan.

Fix 5: Repair the affected application

If Windows keyboard input works normally and only one application reports kbdic.dll, the application may be damaged or may be loading the wrong file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First identify the process:

  1. Record the application name in the error window.
  2. Note whether the error appears before the main window opens.
  3. Test another application that uses keyboard input.
  4. Test the affected application with a different Windows account if possible.

If other applications work, repair or reinstall the affected program rather than copying kbdic.dll into its installation directory.

For a supported Windows application:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find the affected application.
  5. Select its three-dot menu.
  6. Select Advanced options, if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Test the application.
  9. If Repair does not help and Reset is available, back up application data first, then select Reset.

For a traditional desktop program:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs.
  3. Select Programs and Features.
  4. Select the affected program.
  5. Choose Repair or Change, if the installer provides that option.
  6. Otherwise uninstall it, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the application’s official source.

If a game launcher reports the error, use its built-in Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of game files function. There is no verified evidence that one particular game universally requires kbdic.dll, so do not assume the file belongs in a game folder.

Fix 6: Use the Windows repair reinstall

If DISM and SFC cannot restore the component, Windows 11 may offer a repair reinstall that preserves applications, personal files, and settings.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select Recovery.
  4. Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
  5. Select Reinstall now, where the option is available.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  7. Keep the computer connected to power and connected to the internet.
  8. Restart when Windows requests it.
  9. Test kbdic.dll after the repair finishes.

Microsoft describes this option in Fix issues by reinstalling the current version of Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the option is unavailable, use Microsoft’s official Windows installation media for an in-place repair installation. Back up important files first and select the option that preserves personal files and applications when offered.

A repair reinstall is more appropriate than a clean installation when Windows itself is damaged but the existing installation and user data should be preserved.

Fix 7: Use System Restore when the timing is clear

System Restore is useful when the error began immediately after a Windows update, application installation, driver change, or configuration change and a restore point exists.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Create a restore point.
  3. Open the result.
  4. Select System Restore.
  5. Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
  6. Review the affected programs and drivers.
  7. Confirm the restore.
  8. Restart and test Windows.

System Restore rolls back system files and settings but does not normally remove personal files. It is not a substitute for malware removal and cannot safely provide an arbitrary DLL.

Microsoft lists System Restore and related recovery methods in Recovery options in Windows.

Fix 8: Check architecture without manually swapping files

On 64-bit Windows, Microsoft uses:

  • %windir%System32 for native 64-bit system files
  • %windir%SysWOW64 for 32-bit system files

The names are counterintuitive. SysWOW64 is associated with 32-bit components on 64-bit Windows, not 64-bit components.

Windows file-system redirection can also change what a 32-bit or 64-bit process sees. Microsoft documents these rules in its File System Redirector documentation.

Do not solve an architecture mismatch by copying a DLL from one directory to another. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, or a repair installation so Windows selects the correct component for the installed build and architecture.

Driver checks are usually not the answer

kbdic.dll is a keyboard-layout module, not a normal hardware driver. Device Manager cannot directly repair a missing protected Windows DLL.

If the problem began with a physical keyboard or input device failure, check the related driver separately:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Keyboards.
  4. Right-click the affected keyboard.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart if Windows installs an update.

Do not uninstall keyboard devices merely because kbdic.dll is missing. Driver changes are relevant only when Device Manager shows a device problem or the physical keyboard itself is not working.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Outbyte Driver Updater can avoid hunting through dozens of driver versions when a separate keyboard-device problem is present; its free scan identifies driver issues, while driver installation requires the full version.

Do not use regsvr32 for this file

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft documents those requirements in its regsvr32 documentation.

Keyboard-layout DLLs are loaded by Windows as input-layout components and expose layout-related entry points such as KbdLayerDescriptor. There is no evidence that registering kbdic.dll with regsvr32 repairs a missing or corrupted keyboard layout.

Avoid commands such as:

regsvr32 kbdic.dll

A registration error does not prove that the file is missing, and a successful registration would not repair Windows component corruption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the error keeps returning

If DISM and SFC repair the file but the error returns, record:

  • The exact error message
  • The executable that raises it
  • The requested file path
  • Your Windows edition and build
  • Whether the error affects one account or every account
  • Whether Icelandic is installed
  • Recent update, language, antivirus, or cleanup-software changes
  • Relevant entries in Event Viewer

A clean user-profile test can help distinguish per-user input-layout corruption from system-wide Windows damage. If malware is suspected, scan before restoring quarantined files and use Windows recovery or official installation media if system integrity remains doubtful.

FAQ

Is kbdic.dll a virus?

The genuine Microsoft Windows component is not malware. A file with that name outside expected Windows component paths, without a valid Microsoft signature, or associated with suspicious startup behavior may be counterfeit.

Why do I have an Icelandic DLL if I do not speak Icelandic?

Windows can retain or service language and input components independently of your primary display language. The presence of kbdic.dll does not prove that you intentionally installed Icelandic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I install Visual C++ to fix kbdic.dll?

Usually not. kbdic.dll is identified as an Icelandic Windows keyboard-layout module, not as a Visual C++ runtime. Repair Windows first, then repair the affected application if only one program shows the error.

Should I copy the file into System32?

No. Windows architecture and file-system redirection rules make manual placement unreliable. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, or a repair reinstall.

Do I need both System32 and SysWOW64 copies?

Do not decide this manually. Windows servicing handles the correct architecture. On 64-bit Windows, System32 is the native 64-bit system directory and SysWOW64 is the 32-bit system directory.

Can I fix it with regsvr32?

No, not as a normal repair. Keyboard-layout DLLs are loaded by Windows as layout modules and are not established as self-registering COM-style DLLs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I reinstall Windows completely?

Use a repair reinstall first when available. Consider a clean installation only after backing up personal data and when Windows remains damaged, malware cannot be removed reliably, or recovery and repair-installation options have failed.
