smierrsm.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows component, not a game runtime or a Visual C++ library. smierrsm.dll belongs to the legacy Windows SNMP and WMI provider and provides messages for the smi2smir SNMP MIB compiler.

The file’s Windows description is WMI SNMP MIB Compiler Semantic Error Messages. It is mainly relevant to SNMP administration, network monitoring, WMI tools, and MIB compilation rather than ordinary desktop applications.

What smierrsm.dll does

Microsoft’s WMI SNMP Provider translates SNMP management information base data into WMI objects. Its compiler processes SNMP information modules and reports syntax or semantic problems. smierrsm.dll supplies the message resources used when that compiler reports semantic errors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft documents the surrounding component in its WMI and SNMP documentation, and describes the related smi2smir utility in its smi2smir reference.

Item Verified information
File smierrsm.dll
Description WMI SNMP MIB Compiler Semantic Error Messages
Publisher Microsoft Corporation
Component Windows SNMP/WMI provider
Related executable smi2smir.exe
Typical users SNMP tools, WMI monitoring software, MIB developers
Common error type Missing file, damaged component, dependency, or failed loader path

Windows does not install the SNMP provider by default on supported client systems. Therefore, not every Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer should contain this file.

Why Windows reports that smierrsm.dll is missing

The message does not always mean that the named file itself has disappeared. Common causes include:

  • The SNMP or WMI SNMP Provider optional feature was never installed.
  • A Windows upgrade removed or failed to migrate the legacy feature.
  • The component store or protected system files are damaged.
  • Antivirus software quarantined the file.
  • A monitoring application was removed incompletely and left behind a startup entry.
  • A 32-bit application is looking for a compatible component on 64-bit Windows.
  • A dependency of smierrsm.dll is missing.
  • The application’s path or installation is damaged.
  • A MIB compiler is reporting a semantic MIB error rather than a Windows loader error.

The error may appear when launching a network monitor, SNMP utility, legacy installer, WMI administration tool, or script. It does not identify the true failing application by itself.

Fix 1: Install or repair SNMP and WMI SNMP Provider

This is the most direct fix when you actually use SNMP, WMI monitoring, or MIB compilation.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 handle these components as optional capabilities. The old DISM feature names may fail with an error such as 0x800f080c, because SNMP and WMISnmpProvider are no longer recognized as traditional feature names on current client releases.

Install through Windows Settings

Windows 11

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select Optional features.
  4. Click View features next to Add an optional feature.
  5. Search for SNMP.
  6. Select Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP).
  7. Click Next, then Install.
  8. Repeat the process for WMI SNMP Provider.
  9. Restart Windows.

Windows 10

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Optional features.
  4. Click Add a feature.
  5. Select Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP).
  6. Click Install.
  7. Add WMI SNMP Provider using the same screen.
  8. Restart the computer.

The older path, where available, is Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off > SNMP. The Settings method is more appropriate on current Windows releases.

Install through PowerShell

If the graphical feature list is incomplete, open PowerShell as administrator:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Terminal (Admin) or PowerShell (Admin).
  3. Run:
Add-WindowsCapability -Online -Name "SNMP.Client~~~~0.0.1.0"
Add-WindowsCapability -Online -Name "WMI-SNMP-Provider.Client~~~~0.0.1.0"

Check the result with:

Get-WindowsCapability -Online -Name "SNMP.Client~~~~0.0.1.0"
Get-WindowsCapability -Online -Name "WMI-SNMP-Provider.Client~~~~0.0.1.0"

Both capabilities should report:

State : Installed

Restart Windows and test the affected SNMP or WMI application again.

If Windows says the capability cannot be found, check Windows Update access, the installed Windows edition, organizational policies, and Feature-on-Demand source configuration. Do not replace the feature with a DLL copied from another Windows release.

Check the SNMP service

Installing the provider does not automatically mean SNMP is configured or running.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type services.msc.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Find SNMP Service.
  5. Check its status.
  6. If your monitoring setup requires it, right-click the service and select Start.
  7. Open Properties to configure startup behavior and permitted managers if required by your environment.

The service is only relevant if the computer is acting as an SNMP-managed host. Installing it unnecessarily is not a reason to keep SNMP enabled.

  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

If SNMP is installed but smierrsm.dll is missing, damaged, or still cannot load, repair the Windows component store and protected system files.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
  3. Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Wait for it to finish. DISM may obtain replacement files through Windows Update. Then run:

sfc /scannow

Do not close the window until SFC reaches 100 percent.

Restart Windows and test the original program. If SFC reports that it repaired files, the damaged component may now be restored. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When manually tracking component corruption and repeating DISM/SFC is taking too long, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies issues, while repair is handled by the full version, and it is not required for this Microsoft repair process.

If DISM cannot find repair files

If DISM reports that source files could not be found, use a matching Windows repair source:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the path to a known-good repair source from the same Windows edition, language, and architecture as the installed system. A mismatched source can fail or restore the wrong component files.

Microsoft explains this process in its Windows image repair documentation and its guide to using DISM and System File Checker.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software can remove or quarantine a legitimate Windows file if it is damaged, altered, or incorrectly detected.

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Click Protection history.
  4. Look for a detection involving smierrsm.dll.
  5. Check the original file path and detection details.
  6. Update Microsoft Defender or your approved security product.
  7. Run a full scan.

Do not restore the file automatically. First confirm that it came from a Windows system location, has a valid Microsoft signature, and is not a similarly named file from an unknown application. After a reviewed restoration, run DISM and SFC to validate the Windows component.

If the file was found in a random user-writable folder, a temporary directory, or an unfamiliar application folder, treat the event as a possible malware or unwanted-software issue rather than simply restoring the DLL.

Fix 4: Verify the file’s signature and location

If the file exists but Windows still reports an error, check its publisher and path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Rank #3

Open PowerShell and run:

Get-AuthenticodeSignature "C:pathtosmierrsm.dll"

Replace the example path with the actual path shown by the error or by your application.

A valid Microsoft signature supports the file’s authenticity, but the signature alone does not prove that the application is using the correct architecture or that all dependencies are present. Also inspect the containing folder. A file with the correct name in an unexpected application directory deserves further investigation.

Do not assume one universal path. Historical Windows versions placed related SNMP compiler files in different system areas, and 32-bit and 64-bit installations can use different locations. The correct path and binary must match the installed Windows generation and the program requesting it.

Fix 5: Distinguish a missing DLL from a missing dependency

This wording is important:

The specified module could not be found

Windows may display that message when the requested DLL exists but one of its dependent modules does not. Other possibilities include:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The application is loading the wrong architecture.
  • A 32-bit application cannot use a 64-bit dependency.
  • The search path is incorrect.
  • The SNMP provider installation is incomplete.
  • The application itself is damaged.

If smierrsm.dll exists and has a valid signature, do not immediately download another copy. Reinstall the SNMP and WMI SNMP Provider capabilities, then run DISM and SFC. If only one third-party application fails, repair or reinstall that application as well.

A 32-bit program on 64-bit Windows may require 32-bit supporting files. Do not copy a file between System32 and SysWOW64 as a guess. Those directories have specific Windows redirection behavior, and manually mixing architectures can create additional loader failures.

Fix 6: Repair the application that triggers the error

The error may come from a legacy network monitor, SNMP utility, MIB compiler, or abandoned startup entry.

First identify what launches it:

  1. Note the program name in the error dialog.
  2. Check Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Search for the named application.
  4. Select its menu button.
  5. Choose Advanced options, Repair, or Modify if available.
  6. If repair is unavailable, uninstall and reinstall the application from its official vendor source.
  7. Check Task Manager > Startup apps for an entry belonging to removed monitoring software.

If the application does not use SNMP, removing the obsolete program or correcting its startup entry may be the correct solution. Installing unrelated Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, or .NET packages is not supported by the identity of this file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 7: Update the actual device or monitoring driver

smierrsm.dll is not normally a graphics, audio, chipset, or game driver file. Device Manager is therefore not the first place to repair this error. However, a monitoring application may also depend on a separate network adapter, storage controller, or vendor management driver.

To check those devices:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Network adapters, System devices, and any category related to the affected hardware.
  4. Right-click the relevant device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.

Do not update every device indiscriminately to fix smierrsm.dll. Update only the hardware connected to the failing monitoring software.

When identifying stale drivers across several hardware categories is the real bottleneck, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver problems; its free scan shows what needs attention, while installation through the full version is optional, and it does not replace repairing the SNMP component itself.

Fix 8: Windows Server and older Windows releases

Windows Server does not use the client capability commands automatically. Use Server Manager or the server-specific feature installation method appropriate to that release. Do not assume that SNMP.Client~~~~0.0.1.0 is the correct command on Server.

For older Windows versions, the SNMP provider was installed through different Windows component and feature-management interfaces. XP, Vista, and Server 2008 binaries are not interchangeable with current Windows files. An old file size or version is not a universal target for Windows 10 or Windows 11.

If the problem started immediately after upgrading Windows:

  1. Confirm whether the SNMP feature is still listed.
  2. Reinstall SNMP and WMI SNMP Provider using the current Optional Features procedure.
  3. Run DISM followed by SFC.
  4. Check the application for a newer release.
  5. Verify that organizational policy has not blocked the optional capability.

If the component is unavailable entirely, the edition, update source, or Windows release may not provide it. Do not force installation by copying files from an older operating system.

What MIB compiler errors mean

Not every message involving smi2smir indicates a missing DLL. Microsoft documents semantic diagnostics such as:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
smi2smir: Semantic check failed on <file name>

A semantic MIB error can involve an invalid SYNTAX clause, an incorrect import, an inconsistent object definition, or another problem in the MIB itself. These errors require correcting the MIB source, not replacing smierrsm.dll.

Microsoft’s SNMP compiler error documentation describes the diagnostic categories, while its 1011–1020 error reference provides examples.

What not to do

Do not download the DLL from a random website

Avoid DLL download sites and “one-click DLL repair” utilities. An arbitrary copy can contain malware, target the wrong Windows generation, use the wrong architecture, or fail because the real problem is a missing dependency or optional feature.

The safe sources are Windows Optional Features, Windows Update, the Windows component store, SFC, DISM, and a verified repair source matching your installation.

Do not copy the file into System32 or SysWOW64

Manually copying a DLL into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, an application folder, or the DLL cache can break servicing and create an architecture mismatch. Microsoft’s advanced manual replacement procedure is only appropriate when SFC identifies a specific file and a verified copy from the exact Windows build is available.

Do not use regsvr32 for this file

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. smierrsm.dll is a message-resource DLL associated with the SNMP compiler, and Microsoft does not instruct users to register it.

This is not a general fix:

regsvr32 smierrsm.dll

It can produce an error stating that the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. Microsoft’s Regsvr32 guidance explains why registration errors occur.

Do not install unrelated runtime packages

Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, and .NET are not indicated by the documented identity of smierrsm.dll. Install them only when a specific application independently requires them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If nothing restores the file

If the SNMP capabilities, DISM, SFC, antivirus checks, and application repair do not resolve the problem:

  1. Check the exact error text and the application that launches it.
  2. Review Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application for the failing executable.
  3. Confirm whether the application actually requires SNMP.
  4. Use System Restore if the failure began after a recent system change and a suitable restore point exists.
  5. Consider an in-place Windows repair installation if protected component repair continues to fail.
  6. Remove the old monitoring application if SNMP is not needed.

A repair installation is preferable to replacing an unknown DLL. If SNMP is unnecessary, removing the software that requests it is safer than installing a deprecated management component solely to silence an obsolete startup error.

Frequently asked questions

Is smierrsm.dll legitimate?

Yes. It is a genuine Microsoft Windows component associated with the SNMP/WMI provider. Its obscurity does not make it malware, but a copy in an unexpected location or with an invalid signature should be investigated.

Does every Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer need this file?

No. The SNMP provider is an optional, legacy component and is not installed by default on supported client systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is this a gaming DLL?

Usually not. A game may be the program displaying the error, but the file’s documented role is SNMP MIB compiler messaging. Identify what installed or launched the program before treating it as a game dependency.

Should I register it with regsvr32?

No. It is not documented as a self-registering COM or ActiveX DLL. Reinstall the relevant Windows capability and repair system files instead.

Why does Windows say the module cannot be found when the file exists?

A dependent DLL, path problem, or architecture mismatch can produce that wording. The named file is not always the missing item.

What if I do not use SNMP?

Uninstall or repair the application that requests the file, and remove its obsolete startup entry if appropriate. You do not need to install SNMP merely because an unused legacy program asks for it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if antivirus quarantined it?

Review the detection, verify the original path and Microsoft signature, update the security product, and run a complete scan. Restore it only after the detection has been assessed, then validate Windows with DISM and SFC.
