kbdth0.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows keyboard-layout component, so a missing-file message usually calls for Windows or language-feature repair rather than a random DLL download. The safest path is to install pending updates, run DISM followed by SFC, and then remove and reinstall the Thai Kedmanee keyboard if Thai input is affected.
What this file actually does
kbdth0.dll is the Thai Kedmanee Keyboard Layout component from Microsoft Windows. Windows loads keyboard-layout DLLs through its input system when the associated layout is installed or selected. The file contains the translation data that turns physical key presses into characters for the Thai Kedmanee layout.

Microsoft identifies Thai Kedmanee with keyboard identifier 0000041E, also written as 041E:0000041E. Thai Windows installations commonly use this layout as the default input profile. Related Thai layouts include Thai Kedmanee non-ShiftLock and Thai Pattachote.
This is not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET, graphics-driver, or game-runtime file. It belongs to Windows itself.

That distinction matters:
- English-only Windows users may never need the file actively.
- Thai input or a damaged Thai language installation can trigger the error.
- A system-wide missing-file message can indicate corrupted Windows component files.
- A message shown by only one old application may instead come from that application’s damaged installation or compatibility problem.
- Malware or antivirus quarantine can also make a genuine system file unavailable.
Microsoft documents keyboard identifiers and Windows keyboard-layout behavior in its keyboard identifier documentation and keyboard-layout samples.
Is kbdth0.dll safe?
A copy located in a Windows-managed system directory and signed by Microsoft is normally a legitimate Windows component. Do not judge safety from the filename alone, however. Malware can use a familiar filename in an unrelated folder.
To inspect a reported copy:
- Right-click the file in File Explorer.
- Select Properties.
- Open Digital Signatures.
- Check that the signer is Microsoft.
- On the Details tab, confirm that the description refers to the Thai Kedmanee keyboard layout or Windows.
Do not replace a suspicious copy manually. If the file is outside a Windows system directory, unsigned, or detected by Windows Security, investigate it as a security issue rather than copying it into System32.
Is it required for ordinary Windows use?
Usually not. It is relevant when Thai Kedmanee is installed or selected. Removing Thai input may stop Windows from attempting to load the layout, but that only avoids the symptom. If Windows has damaged protected files, repair Windows instead of simply hiding the message.
Is there one universal version or file size?
No. The exact binary depends on the Windows release and system architecture. There is no single version, hash, file size, or architecture that should be treated as valid for every Windows 10 and Windows 11 installation.
Diagnose the failure by its symptoms
| What you see | Most likely cause | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| The error appears at sign-in or while changing input layouts | Damaged Windows or Thai language files | Windows Update, DISM, then SFC |
| Thai input disappeared or cannot be selected | Incomplete or damaged language feature | Remove and re-add Thai |
| Only one old game or application shows the message | Broken installation or compatibility issue | Repair or reinstall that application |
| The message began after an update | Component-store or update failure | DISM, SFC, and Windows recovery options |
| Windows Security quarantined the file | Quarantine or malware damage | Protection History and a full scan |
| Another Windows account works normally | Profile-specific layout configuration | Re-add the layout or test a new profile |
| SFC reports no violations but an application still fails | Stale registration or application-specific message | Repair the application and inspect its installation |
The familiar wording can vary, including “missing,” “not found,” “could not be loaded,” or “contains an error.” These are standard Windows loader-style variants, not necessarily quotations from a Microsoft page about this specific file.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Windows servicing is the correct first repair because it can restore system components and language features without mixing files from different builds.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Windows 11
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Test the input switcher and the application that showed the error.
Windows 10
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows and test again.
If the error disappears after the restart, the missing component was likely restored or its language registration was refreshed. If Windows Update fails, records an installation error, or the message returns, continue with DISM and SFC rather than downloading the DLL separately.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies where possible. Run them in that order.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Restart Windows if DISM requests it.
Run System File Checker
After DISM completes:
- Open an elevated Command Prompt again if it is no longer open.
- Enter:
sfc /scannow
- Press Enter.
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart the computer.
- Test Thai input and the affected program.
Microsoft explains this DISM-then-SFC process in its System File Checker repair guidance.
Interpret the result
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected Windows files appear intact. Investigate the Thai language feature, user profile, or application next.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some: run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If the problem remains, use the Windows recovery options below.
- DISM reports that source files could not be found: check Windows Update connectivity and repair Windows Update before retrying. Do not use a DLL download sites site as the missing source.
Repeatedly running SFC without repairing the component store first usually does not address the underlying problem.
If you want a guided way to identify repair issues instead of repeatedly hunting through Windows servicing results and logs, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show what it finds; its repair action is available in the full version, and it is not required for this fix.
Fix 3: Remove and re-add Thai Kedmanee
Use this route when Thai input is missing, switching layouts triggers the error, or Windows appears to have an incomplete language installation.
Windows 11
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Choose Time & language.
- Select Language & region.
- Find Thai or the language containing the keyboard.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Language options.
- Under Keyboards, select the damaged or duplicate Thai layout.
- Choose Remove.
- Under Keyboards, select Add a keyboard.
- Choose Thai Kedmanee.
- Restart Windows or sign out and back in.
- Test the input switcher.
If Thai is not listed:
- Return to Time & language → Language & region.
- Select Add a language.
- Search for Thai.
- Select it and choose Next.
- Install the language features Windows offers.
- Open Thai’s Language options.
- Add Thai Kedmanee under Keyboards.
Windows 10
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Time & Language.
- Choose Language.
- Select the Thai language entry.
- Choose Options.
- Remove the Thai keyboard layout if it is listed.
- Select Add a keyboard.
- Choose Thai Kedmanee.
- Restart and test.
Windows obtains language components through Windows Settings and Windows Update. Microsoft’s instructions for managing layouts are available under language and keyboard input settings, and its overview of Windows language packs explains the supported installation route.
If Thai is not needed, removing the Thai language and its keyboard may stop the load attempt. That is reasonable for a system that never uses Thai input, but it does not repair broader Windows corruption.

If the error appears only when launching one old game or program, do not assume that program owns kbdth0.dll. It may be displaying a Windows loader error because its startup process requests an input layout, or it may have a broken compatibility configuration.
Repair an installed Windows application
On Windows 11:
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Launch the program again.
If Repair is unavailable or does not help, use Reset when appropriate. Reset can remove the application’s local settings or data, so check the application’s own instructions first.

- Select the program.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what the installer provides.
- If you uninstall it, download the installer only from the publisher’s official source.
- Restart Windows before reinstalling if the program’s installer requests it.
For a game launcher, use its built-in Verify, Repair, or equivalent function for game files. That can fix files belonging to the game, but it will not repair the Windows keyboard layout itself.
If repairing Windows does not change a failure limited to one program, the application’s own reinstall is the definitive application-specific repair. Microsoft also documents repairing apps and programs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix 5: Check Windows Security and malware damage
Antivirus software can quarantine a genuine system file, but restoring a file blindly is unsafe.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
kbdth0.dll. - Check the detected path, threat classification, and action taken.
- Restore the file only if the copy is confirmed to be a genuine Microsoft Windows file and the detection is clearly a false positive.
- Run a Full scan afterward.
If the file is unsigned, located in an application directory, or associated with other suspicious behavior, do not restore it. Update Windows Security, run a full scan, and back up important personal files. Where infection is suspected or normal recovery options fail, use Microsoft’s Windows recovery options.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore can roll back system files, drivers, and settings without removing personal documents. It is useful when the error started immediately after an application installation, update, cleanup tool, or other system change.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
- Test the keyboard layout and affected application.
System Restore is not a substitute for malware removal or a backup. It may not be available if protection was disabled or no restore point exists.
Fix 7: Repair-reinstall Windows 11
For severe Windows 11 component corruption, the built-in repair reinstall can reinstall the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings on supported systems.
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
- Keep the computer connected to power and the internet.
- Test
kbdth0.dllafter Windows restarts.
If this option is missing, use the recovery choices available for your installation, or use official Windows installation media after backing up important data. Microsoft describes the supported Windows 11 process in its guide to reinstalling the current version of Windows.

Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
Do not start with:
regsvr32 kbdth0.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A keyboard-layout DLL supplies layout data to the Windows input system; it is not normally repaired by self-registering it as a COM component. The command may simply produce an error and does not restore a damaged language feature.
Microsoft documents the command’s purpose and syntax in its regsvr32 documentation.

Why manual DLL downloads are a bad fix
Do not download kbdth0.dll from a random DLL repository or copy an unknown file into System32, SysWOW64, a game folder, or an application directory. The download may be:
- The wrong Windows build
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- Modified or unsigned
- Malware-infected
- Incompatible with the component store
- Unable to fix the language registration that caused the error
The official sources are Windows servicing, DISM, SFC, Windows Update, and the Thai language-feature installation in Settings. Manual replacement is an advanced recovery action only when using a verified file from the identical Windows build, preferably after normal repair tools have failed.
Architecture, drivers, and Device Manager
Windows has separate 32-bit and 64-bit components, but the correct copy depends on the Windows installation and the component’s role. Do not mix files from another computer, another Windows release, or a different architecture. Windows manages the correct system locations through servicing.
Device Manager is not normally a fix for kbdth0.dll, because this is a keyboard-layout component rather than a physical keyboard driver. You can still check for a separate hardware problem:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Keyboards.
- Right-click the physical keyboard device.
- Choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
Do not expect this to replace kbdth0.dll. It only addresses a separate keyboard-device driver problem.
If manually checking many hardware drivers is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; the full version performs driver installation, but updating a keyboard driver is not required to repair this Windows layout DLL.
Frequently asked questions
Can Visual C++ Redistributable repair kbdth0.dll?
Normally no. kbdth0.dll is a Windows Thai keyboard-layout component, not a Visual C++ runtime library. Reinstall Visual C++ only when a separate application specifically reports a missing Visual C++ runtime.

Does DirectX or .NET fix it?
Normally no. Those packages are unrelated to the Windows keyboard-layout module. Repair Windows or the Thai language feature instead.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Where should kbdth0.dll be located?
Windows manages its system components in protected system directories. The correct location varies with Windows architecture and release. Do not copy the file into an application folder or choose a location based on a download site’s instructions.
Is the file always installed?
Not necessarily. Its use depends on installed language and keyboard features. A system that does not use Thai input may not actively require the layout.
What if SFC says everything is fine?
Then the message may come from a damaged Thai layout registration, user profile, or one application. Re-add Thai Kedmanee, test another Windows account, and repair the application that displays the message.
Should I delete registry keyboard-layout entries?
No, not as a first repair. Registry edits can remove valid layouts or create new input problems. Use Windows Settings to remove and add keyboards, and reserve deeper registry work for qualified support.
