If your group wants to keep chasing gear together, start with Outriders for a three-player campaign, Borderlands 4 for four-player gun-and-loot runs, or Warframe and The First Descendant for free, ability-driven progression. Remnant II is the better fit for a trio that wants tougher encounters. None is a direct copy of The Division’s grounded urban cover combat, so choose by party size and the part of the loop your group wants to keep. This guide is current to October 30, 2026.

| Borderlands 4 | A four-player group focused on guns and loot | Four-player online co-op; crossplay requires SHiFT | Oct 2026 |
| Warframe | Friends on different platforms who want power-driven missions | Cross-platform play and cross-platform save are separate | Oct 2026 |
| The First Descendant | A free-to-play group looking for third-person looting and bosses | Four online players; online play required | Oct 2026 |
| Remnant II | A trio that puts difficult fights and exploration first | Co-op exploration, bosses, rewards, and archetype progression | Oct 2026 |
| Destiny 2 | A group interested in its existing activities and equipment chase | Three-player Fireteams and Pinnacle Ops; six-player raids | Oct 2026 |
Which game like The Division should your group choose?
The right substitute depends on which part of The Division your group values most: coordinated co-op, a shared campaign, character builds, repeatable missions, or the gear chase. Player count and platform compatibility can narrow the choice before genre labels do.

Its store listing describes a one-to-three-player story and endgame with four classes, powers, weapons, and gear.
- You have four players and want to collect guns and gear: consider Borderlands 4. It supports four-player online co-op, but shifts to a first-person, less grounded style.
- Your friends play on different platforms: investigate Warframe first, and confirm each person’s platform and account plans. Cross-platform play lets eligible players join up; cross-platform save concerns moving progression between platforms and has separate account-linking rules.
- You want a free-to-play, third-person looter: compare The First Descendant with Warframe. The former emphasizes character and weapon customization and boss encounters; the latter emphasizes Warframe abilities and movement.
- Your trio wants harder encounters: look at Remnant II, which is more encounter-and-build focused than a grounded city-cover shooter.
- You are considering Destiny 2: decide based on the activities and progression already available, not an assumption of continuing new live-service content. Bungie announced a final live-service content update for June 9, 2026.
Think of these as different answers to “what should we keep?” rather than interchangeable versions of the same game. A group that mainly wants cooperative shooting may be happier with an adjacent squad shooter, while players seeking extraction risk should consider whether they actually want other raiders to threaten their run.
What are the best co-op loot-shooter alternatives?
These six picks preserve different pieces of The Division formula. The order prioritizes a close fit for cooperative gear progression, then highlights options whose distinctive format makes them a better match for particular groups.

1. Outriders: best for a three-player campaign-and-build run
Outriders is the clearest choice here for a trio that wants a story campaign and endgame with character builds and loot. Square Enix and People Can Fly’s Steam description specifies one-to-three-player co-op, four classes, powers, weapons, and gear, with story and endgame available in drop-in co-op. That makes it a useful fit for a group that wants to progress through a campaign together rather than assemble only for isolated activities. See the Outriders Steam listing.
The party cap is decisive: this is not the pick for a group of four that insists on entering the same co-op session. The class-and-power emphasis also means the combat will not reproduce The Division’s grounded urban setting or cover-based feel. Choose it for a compact campaign and builds, not for a one-to-one mechanical substitute.
The Steam listing also identifies cross-platform multiplayer. Because platform editions and store terms can differ, the group should verify the exact versions it plans to buy before assuming that every combination of platforms will work the same way.
2. Borderlands 4: best for four players chasing guns and gear
Borderlands 4 fits a four-person group whose main priority is online co-op and a steady hunt for weapons and equipment. PlayStation’s US game page lists four-player online co-op, skill trees, weapons, gear, and individual level scaling. That individual scaling is relevant when friends do not have identical character levels: the listing describes scaling per player rather than requiring everyone’s level to match. Check the PlayStation game page.
Expect a change in viewpoint and tone. It is a first-person shooter and a less grounded alternative to the cover-focused, urban combat associated with The Division. If a squad wants the gear chase but not a realistic military setting, that difference may be welcome; if cover tactics are the defining requirement, this is not an exact replacement.

Gearbox senior project producer Anthony Nicholson described crossplay as available at launch and requiring a SHiFT account. Crossplay and account setup are practical prerequisites, not details to leave until everyone has bought the game. On PS5, the PlayStation listing says PS Plus is required for online play. It also identifies two-player local split-screen, which is a separate way to play from four-person online co-op.
3. Warframe: best for cross-platform, ability-driven progression
Warframe is a strong option when a group values cooperative missions and progression across different platforms more than reproducing The Division’s cover-and-fire rhythm. Digital Extremes describes squad missions built around Warframe abilities and weapon-building. Movement and powers are central to its identity, making it a substantial shift from grounded cover combat.
Digital Extremes documents cross-platform play across PC, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, and mobile, and separately explains cross-platform save. The distinction matters: crossplay concerns joining friends, while cross-save concerns carrying progression between platforms. Read the studio’s cross-platform play and save guide before linking accounts.
Account linking is not a casual merge of every inventory and progression history. The guide says the selected primary account’s progress overrides the linked secondary account’s progress, and that linking is permanent. A player who has existing progress on multiple platforms should understand that consequence before choosing a primary account. For a group deciding only whether it can play together, check the crossplay instructions; for someone moving between platforms, separately review the cross-save steps.
4. The First Descendant: best for free third-person looting and boss fights
The First Descendant is a free-to-play, third-person option for a group that wants weapon and character customization alongside boss encounters. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s US PlayStation listing identifies four online players and says online play is required. Those details make it a particularly straightforward candidate for a four-person group that wants to try a free base game before committing to a purchase. Check the US PlayStation listing.

Free-to-play does not make it mechanically identical to other games on this list. Its described emphasis is on third-person shooting, customized characters and weapons, and boss encounters. That is a different shape of progression from Warframe’s abilities and movement, even though both are free-to-play cooperative options.
Platform details can become stale, so do not rely on old listings that include unsupported versions. Sony’s page states that PS4 support ended June 19, 2025. Anyone planning a console group should confirm current availability on the relevant regional store page before inviting friends or making purchase decisions.
5. Remnant II: best for a trio that wants challenging encounters
Remnant II is a better match for a group that values cooperative exploration, bosses, rewards, and distinct archetype progression than for one seeking a direct recreation of The Division’s city-based cover fights. Its appeal in this comparison is the encounter-and-build loop: players explore, face bosses, and develop their characters through archetypes and rewards.
That makes it a focused recommendation for a trio willing to put challenging fights ahead of a familiar urban setting. Do not pick it merely because it shares a broad looter-shooter label; the relevant question is whether your group wants exploration and boss encounters as the center of the co-op session.
A cited guide compares looter-shooters and co-op alternatives, and a PS5 product listing exists, but retailer availability and physical-versus-digital format are offer-specific. Confirm the current US listing and its format before purchasing a particular copy. Read the cited comparison of co-op looter-shooters.

6. Destiny 2: best for existing activities, with a service-status qualification
Destiny 2 offers several co-op group sizes and equipment rewards: Bungie documents three-player Fireteams and Pinnacle Ops alongside six-player raids. That range can work for a smaller fireteam or a larger raid group, depending on the activity. Bungie’s May 21, 2026 statement announced June 9, 2026 as the final live-service content update and said the game would remain playable. The sensible recommendation is to consider its existing activities, rather than count on an assumed ongoing flow of new content.
As with other games that support multiple platforms, distinguish playing together from bringing a character to another platform. Bungie publishes separate crossplay and cross-save guidance. Its cross-save guide also says DLC licenses do not transfer with cross-save, so a player moving a character should not assume that purchased expansions move along with it. Review the platform-specific account and license terms before reorganizing a group around shared purchases.
What if your group wants shooting or extraction more than loot?
Some alternatives resemble The Division mainly because they bring friends together for squad combat. They are useful recommendations when the team experience matters more than an equivalent gear economy, but they should not be treated as like-for-like loot shooters.
Adjacent squad shooters
- Helldivers 2: an online-only shooter for up to three friends. Consider it when coordinated shooting is the draw, not when you want a matching loot progression system.
- Deep Rock Galactic: cooperative mining and fighting for one to four players. Its mission premise is distinct from urban cover combat and the traditional gear loop.
- World War Z: Aftermath: four-player zombie-horde missions with class progression. The class system gives players progression to work on, but the horde-mission focus makes it an adjacent squad shooter rather than a direct substitute.
Higher-risk scavenging
ARC Raiders supports parties of up to three and centers on scavenging, crafting, and upgrades. Its defining trade-off is extraction risk: other raiders can threaten the group, unlike a straightforward cooperative PvE recommendation. Choose it if that uncertainty is part of the appeal; avoid it if your group wants to work through missions without the threat of competing players.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you check player count, crossplay, and cross-save?
Confirm the group’s session size and platform mix before buying. “Co-op,” “crossplay,” and “cross-save” answer different questions, and overlooking any one of them can leave a friend unable to join or carrying the wrong account progress.

- Count everyone who must play together. The documented caps differ: Outriders supports up to three players; Borderlands 4 and The First Descendant list four online players; ARC Raiders supports parties of up to three. A game that suits a trio may not serve a four-person group.
- Write down each person’s platform and edition. A crossplay statement does not automatically establish that every edition or platform combination is supported. Verify the current store or developer guidance for the specific group before purchase.
- Ask whether the group needs crossplay or cross-save. Crossplay is about inviting and playing with friends on other platforms. Cross-save is about accessing progression across platforms. A player may care about one without needing the other.
- Check account requirements and what linking does. Borderlands 4 crossplay requires SHiFT, while Warframe warns that choosing a primary account affects the linked secondary account and that linking is permanent. Review the steps before confirming an account link.
- Verify online-service requirements. The First Descendant’s US PlayStation listing says online play is required; the Borderlands 4 PS5 listing says PS Plus is needed for online play. Store requirements can be platform- and region-specific, so check the page for the actual edition your group will use.
These checks matter particularly when a group is deciding between the four-player choices and the three-player options. They also help separate a buying decision from a later account decision: the game may offer crossplay, yet an individual player can still have a separate question about carrying progress or expansion access to another system.
How we picked these recommendations
The recommendations are organized around documented co-op capacity, the type of progression and combat described by official listings or developer guidance, and the practical fit for a group leaving The Division. The ranked picks preserve different parts of cooperative looting and character-building; adjacent shooters and extraction games are separated because their central loops differ. No entry is presented as a tested performance comparison or an exact replacement for The Division’s grounded urban cover combat.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is The Division 2 getting crossplay?
Ubisoft’s October 13, 2026 showcase said its planned crossplay rollout would begin after the November 3 DLC launch, proceed gradually during November, and reach full availability by Season 4. As of October 30, those were future plans, not features that had already launched. See Ubisoft’s showcase recap for the announcement.
Does cross-save move my DLC to another platform in Destiny 2?
No. Bungie’s cross-save guidance says DLC licenses do not transfer with cross-save, so access to an expansion can depend on the platform where it was purchased. Check Bungie’s platform-specific license guidance before relying on a moved character to access paid content.
Is 4:LOOP available to play yet?
No release date was established in the PlayStation listing described here: the game was marked “Announced” with its release date to be determined. Treat it as upcoming rather than a current co-op option until a release is confirmed.
