The safest way to learn Kernal Hearts is to build around one clear combat idea, then add mobility or defense whenever it creates more safe opportunities to attack. The game—listed on Steam as Kernel Hearts—is a multiplayer co-op roguelike action RPG in which four magical girls climb the Tower of Babel, fight angelic creatures in real time, defeat a boss on each level, and return from expeditions with rewards used to customize the M.A.H.O.U. Unit with chips.
This guide focuses on decisions a new player can make immediately: how to read a run, what to upgrade first, how to recover from a failed expedition, and whether solo or co-op is the better starting point. There is no authoritative patch-specific list proving one universally best character, chip, weapon, or stat breakpoint, so the recommendations below emphasize a repeatable decision process rather than a fake tier list.

What Kernal Hearts is and how a run works
The game’s canonical title is often written “Kernal Hearts,” while the official Steam listing uses “Kernel Hearts.” Steam describes it as “Kernel Hearts is a Multiplayer Co-Op Roguelike Action RPG about four magical girls and their attempt to save a world that’s drowning in ashes.” Its central activity is a climb through the Tower of Babel against angelic creatures.

- With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
- Real-time combat: attacks, spells and movement powers are used together while enemies are active.
- Route progress: you advance through tower levels and choose how much danger to accept on the way.
- Rewards: an expedition supplies improvements for the current attempt and resources that matter after you return.
- Boss encounters: each level culminates in a boss fight, so a build that clears ordinary rooms quickly can still fail if it cannot create safe damage windows against a pattern-heavy target.
- Post-run customization: after an expedition, rewards are spent on chip customization for the M.A.H.O.U. Unit.
Think of the loop as a feedback cycle: learn what killed you, change one relevant part of the chip setup, and use the next climb to test that change. A failed run is useful when it tells you whether the problem was positioning, timing, damage, survivability or route selection.
Your first runs: a survival plan that works before you know the systems
1. Learn movement and enemy timing before chasing damage
Early progress is usually limited by taking avoidable hits, not by lacking one more offensive effect. During your first attempts, watch four things:
- Attack range: learn how close you must stand before an attack connects and how much space it leaves for retreat.
- Recovery animation: note the period after your own attack when you cannot immediately move or respond.
- Dodge timing: practice moving through or away from danger instead of dodging only after an attack has already reached you.
- Enemy commitment: identify when an enemy has committed to an animation. That is often the safest moment to strike, reposition or disengage.
These are practical action-game fundamentals inferred from the combat loop, not published rules or guaranteed exploits. Spend a few encounters observing rather than trying to maximize damage. If you know why a hit happened, you can fix it; if you only know that your health disappeared, every upgrade becomes guesswork.
2. Treat route progress and health as resources
Not every fight deserves the same price. If a low-value encounter can be bypassed or approached from a safer position, do not spend a large portion of your health simply to clear it faster. The official loop confirms expeditions and rewards; the risk-management choice is a practical way to make those resources last.
Before committing to a dangerous room, ask:
- Will the reward advance the main attack plan, improve survival, or create more reliable movement?
- Can you enter with enough health to handle the next encounter and the level boss?
- Are you taking the fight because it is valuable, or because you have already started it?
Leaving a poor fight is not wasted time if it preserves the run’s chance of reaching the next boss. Route discipline matters more as encounters become more dangerous higher in the tower.
3. Pick one primary combat idea
Kernel Hearts lets you combine attacks, spells and movement powers. That flexibility is useful, but a beginner who takes every attractive option can end up with effects that do not help one another. Choose a central idea—such as making one attack pattern safer to repeat or using a spell to control space around a preferred range—and judge every later option against it.

A focused plan gives you a clear test: did this reward make the main action stronger, safer or easier to use? If the answer is no, the reward may still be useful later, but it should not displace a choice that directly supports the plan.

4. Add defense or mobility when it creates damage windows
Defensive and movement choices are not automatically “utility” picks that you should postpone. A dodge, repositioning tool or defensive effect can increase total damage when it lets you stay alive long enough to attack again. The useful question is not whether an option displays a damage number; it is whether it increases the number of attacks you can perform safely.
For example, if you repeatedly lose health while closing distance, prioritize a movement or defensive option that solves that approach problem. If you survive the approach but get trapped during your own recovery animation, choose a tool that lets you disengage or reduce the time spent exposed. This is a decision rule, not a universal ranking of abilities.
5. Enter every boss with a plan for space
Each tower level ends in a boss fight. Do not arrive with a loadout that only works when enemies stand still in a group. Before the fight, identify your preferred distance, the direction you will retreat, and which movement power lets you reset after an attack. Preserve enough health and resources to learn the pattern rather than spending everything on the final ordinary room.
What to upgrade first
There is no authoritative source establishing one best character, chip combination or numerical breakpoint for every version of the game. Instead, use this priority order whenever you receive an upgrade:
- Fix the reason you are losing. If you die while approaching enemies, improve mobility or a defensive window. If you are safe but cannot finish encounters before the arena becomes crowded, strengthen the primary attack or spell.
- Reinforce the main combat pattern. Prefer an effect that makes your chosen attack or spell more reliable over an unrelated effect with a larger-looking benefit.
- Increase repeatability. A choice that lets you perform the plan in more situations is often more valuable for a beginner than a situational effect that is powerful only when conditions are perfect.
- Prepare for the current climb. Consider the encounters and boss pattern you are about to face. An upgrade that solves the next section’s main threat can be better than a generally attractive option that does not address it.
Use the following three-question check on every reward:

- Hall Effect Joysticks: Delivering enhanced recentering performance for smoother control and superior anti-drift capability. Plus, with anti-friction rings.
- 2-Way Trigger Lock: With trigger stops, gamers can toggle between short and long pull positions. Additionally, gamers can activate hair trigger mode by pressing M+LT/RT (triggers must be in the long pull position).
- 1000Hz Polling Rate: This ensures that your inputs are registered almost instantaneously, minimizing lag and maximizing your performance during competitive play.
- Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
- Does it strengthen the run’s main attack or spell pattern?
- Does it improve survivability, mobility or the number of safe damage windows?
- Does it help against the encounters and boss pattern on this climb?
If an option answers “yes” to none of these questions, taking it may dilute the build. Keep the loadout internally consistent until you understand what each effect contributes.
How to diagnose a failed run
Do not change the entire build after one defeat. Classify the failure first, then make one targeted adjustment. This keeps the next expedition readable.
| What happened | Likely problem | Next-run change |
|---|---|---|
| You lost most of your health before reaching the boss. | Movement, timing or route risk was the limiting factor. | Practice enemy commitment and recovery windows; choose mobility or defense if it creates safer approaches; avoid low-value fights that consume health. |
| You reached the boss healthy but could not finish it. | The primary attack or spell pattern did not produce enough reliable damage windows. | Choose a reward that directly reinforces the main offensive idea and test whether you can attack safely between boss patterns. |
| You died while using your strongest attack. | The attack’s recovery or range left you exposed. | Add a movement or defensive option that covers the exposed period instead of immediately abandoning the attack. |
| Some rooms were easy, but one encounter repeatedly ended the run. | The build was too specialized for ordinary enemies or lacked a response to that encounter. | Use the next upgrade to address that specific threat while keeping the primary plan intact. |
| You cannot tell why the run failed. | Too many upgrades or route decisions changed at once. | Keep the next loadout close to the previous one and alter only one category: damage, survivability, mobility or route risk. |
This approach turns the post-run screen into a practical experiment. The goal is not to find a perfect setup immediately; it is to make each expedition answer one clear question.
Using the M.A.H.O.U. Unit and chips between expeditions
After an expedition, the documented progression loop returns you to chip customization for the M.A.H.O.U. Unit. Treat this as the place to correct a recurring weakness, not as a reason to rebuild randomly after every defeat.
Keep a small, legible change log
Before changing chips, record one sentence about the run: “I was safe until close range,” “I lacked damage at the boss,” or “I spent too much health on optional encounters.” Then make the smallest chip adjustment that could address that sentence. On the next run, check whether the same failure appears.
Separate permanent planning from run-specific rewards
During a climb, rewards improve the current attempt. Between expeditions, chip customization changes the foundation you bring into future attempts. Do not judge a permanent adjustment by one room; judge it by whether it makes your chosen combat idea easier to execute across several encounters.

Do not chase an imaginary universal build
The available authoritative descriptions establish the game’s systems, but they do not publish a patch-specific best-in-slot list. If a guide claims that one exact character, chip or stat combination is always optimal without showing a version and conditions, treat that claim cautiously. Your strongest beginner setup is the one whose purpose you can explain and whose weakness you know how to manage.

The Steam listing supports co-op with up to four friends. The game director has also said in a Steam Community post that the released game had crossplay between all PC versions. Controller support was specifically described for the demo on Steam and Epic; that statement does not prove identical controller behavior on every current release path, so verify the listing for your platform before buying a controller specifically for this game.
| Approach | Advantages | Costs and risks | Best learning focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solo | One player controls every movement, target and upgrade decision. There is no need to wait for a teammate or reconcile different combat plans. | There is no partner to cover a mistake, distract an enemy or rescue a run that has become dangerous. Every movement and defensive decision is yours. | Learning enemy timing, attack recovery, route risk and the exact limits of your chosen build. |
| Co-op | Up to four friends can combine damage, crowd control and movement patterns. Teammates can create opportunities for one another and distribute attention across threats. | Uncoordinated attacks can overlap, players can choose conflicting upgrade directions, and poor target communication can make a crowded encounter harder to read. | Calling targets, spacing yourselves, avoiding simultaneous risky attacks and choosing complementary rather than identical roles. |
How to make solo practice useful
Solo play is a strong choice when you want to understand why a run succeeds or fails. Because every decision belongs to you, you can test one chip change without another player’s damage or movement masking its effect. Start solo if you are still learning attack range, recovery and dodge timing, or if your group tends to move too quickly for you to observe patterns.
How to make a co-op run manageable
Co-op becomes easier when the group agrees on simple rules before entering the tower:
- Call the most dangerous target instead of having everyone attack different enemies.
- Leave room for teammates to retreat; do not stack every risky attack in the same space.
- Choose complementary strengths when the available rewards allow it rather than copying one another without a reason.
- Say when you are disengaging so the group does not follow a retreating player into an avoidable hit.
These are coordination practices, not official role requirements. The game supports the party size; the group still has to decide how it will share attention and space.

- Choose a primary attack or spell pattern. Decide whether you are most comfortable fighting from close range, at a safer distance or by controlling the space between you and enemies.
- Add one movement answer. Pick the option that solves your most common positioning problem: entering range, escaping recovery or crossing a dangerous area.
- Add one survivability answer. Select defense when it protects the primary pattern or gives you time to learn a boss, not merely because it is labeled defensive.
- Use remaining choices to reinforce the plan. Prefer consistency and repeatable damage windows over unrelated effects.
- Test the template for a full attempt. Do not replace every component after one difficult room. Identify the first failure point and change only that part.
A strong beginner build is therefore coherent rather than maximal: one main way to deal damage, one answer to positioning, and enough protection to use both without gambling the run on every encounter.
Common beginner mistakes and their fixes
Taking every attractive reward
A collection of individually interesting effects can be weaker than a smaller set that reinforces one idea. Apply the three-question check and decline options that do not strengthen damage, survival, mobility or the next threat.
Spending health to save time
Fast clears are not valuable if they leave you unable to learn or survive the boss. Choose safer routes when a room offers little benefit, and treat health as part of your route budget.

Blaming damage for a positioning problem
If your attack would work while you were alive and in range, more damage will not fix the failed approach. First solve the movement or recovery window that prevents you from using the attack.
Changing the whole loadout after a defeat
Large changes hide cause and effect. Keep most of the setup, adjust one category, and use the next expedition to test the hypothesis.
Assuming co-op removes the need to learn patterns
Additional players can distribute attention, but overlapping risky attacks and unclear targets can create new hazards. Learn enough movement and timing to retreat without relying on a teammate to repair every mistake.
Controls and comfort
A PC game controller can be a sensible comfort option for an action game built around movement, attacks and timing. The game director’s Steam Community post refers to controller support for the demo on Steam and Epic, while the Steam listing supplies the current platform information. Because the cited controller statement concerns the demo and release paths can differ, check the current store listing and your chosen launcher’s compatibility before purchasing hardware for this purpose.

Patch-specific character rankings, exact chip values, weapon breakpoints and a universally optimal solo or co-op composition are not established by the authoritative material available for this guide. That does not prevent effective play. It means your best source of improvement is a controlled loop: observe the failure, select one upgrade that addresses it, and verify the result on the next climb.
For a first session, prioritize learning how far your attacks reach, when your animations leave you exposed, which movement option keeps you alive, and how much route risk your health can support. Once those answers are familiar, the M.A.H.O.U. Unit’s chip customization gives you a meaningful way to turn that knowledge into a stronger recurring setup.
