King K. Rool is the crocodilian ruler and recurring antagonist tied to the Kremlings in the Donkey Kong Country series. In the original game, he steals Donkey Kong’s banana hoard, sending Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong after it. “Banana-obsessed” is a playful shorthand for that recurring plot device; Nintendo’s descriptions establish the theft, not a deeper motive.
Who is King K. Rool?
Nintendo describes the original Donkey Kong Country as a 1994 game starring Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong, who team up to recover their banana hoard from “evil croc monarch King K. Rool.” The description appears on Nintendo’s page for the Game Boy Advance edition, which is a product page for that edition—not evidence that the game first launched on GBA. Nintendo’s Donkey Kong Country page also notes that players control one Kong at a time.
His official amiibo description supplies a compact character sketch: “He’s a big croc with a big attitude…and a tiny crown.” That wording is Nintendo’s, from the King K. Rool amiibo detail page.
Why does King K. Rool steal Donkey Kong’s bananas?
The original game’s premise gives a straightforward answer: K. Rool takes the Kongs’ banana hoard, and they set out to get it back. Nintendo’s description does not explain a more specific motive, so claims about why he wants the bananas beyond the story setup would go further than the official account.

Is Kaptain K. Rool the same character?
In Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest, Nintendo identifies Donkey Kong’s kidnapper as Kaptain K. Rool. In this pirate-themed sequel, he demands the banana hoard as ransom. It is a different role and title for K. Rool in that game, not the name used for his original-game monarch persona.
Nintendo’s series overview also distinguishes the next sequel’s villain: Donkey Kong Country 3 has a new master, KAOS. The overview lists the original game and its two sequels in the Super Nintendo catalog on Nintendo Switch Online; membership is required. It also lists Donkey Kong Country Returns HD and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze as Switch releases, but does not establish that K. Rool appears in either. What does the King K. Rool amiibo do?
Nintendo says the King K. Rool figure from the Super Smash Bros. series appears as a Figure Player in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate when tapped. Nintendo records its release date as February 14, 2019. The product page documents this specific functionality; Nintendo cautions that amiibo compatibility and functionality can vary, so it should not be assumed to work the same way in other games. The figure is a character-specific collectible as well as an in-game accessory, but price and stock depend on current retailer availability.

Nintendo of Europe’s Game Boy Advance product page reports that Donkey Kong Country sold six million copies worldwide after six weeks. The page does not state the year for that milestone, so it should not be treated as a dated sales total. It also attributes to Time the description “the second most innovative product – not just videogame, but – of the year,” without stating which year.
