Dragon’s Lair is a Kuttenberg side quest that sends Henry from Bylany to investigate supposed dragon bones. Bring a spade and follow the trail promptly: rival groups can reach the dig site first, though the guides do not establish a reliable countdown. At the end, you can return the bones to Monk Slava for the church-aligned outcome, hand them to Gerhard for 275 Groschen, or try to retain the Dragon Claw for a later Legacy of the Forge crafting goal.
How to start Dragon’s Lair
After Kuttenberg opens for exploration, find Monk Slava in Bylany. He asks Henry to carry a message to the abbot. PowerPyx lists completion of the main quest “Speak of the Devil” as a progression requirement for Dragon’s Lair. The abbot is at a church outside Kuttenberg; deliver Slava’s message, then return to him.

The abbot wants the remains destroyed to head off rumors or heresy. Gerhard, who is with the abbot, is interested in acquiring the bones and offers payment. Hearing him out does not by itself commit Henry to his side, so you can decide what to do with the find later.
Find Vashek and get directions
Back in Bylany, Slava sends Henry to Woodcutter Vashek. Leopold and his men may interrupt the conversation. Dialogue checks can help you avoid a fight; guides also describe fighting or otherwise resolving the confrontation. Keep moving after the encounter, since the quest involves a race to the bones.

Vashek gives directions if Henry passes a speech check or pays 200 Groschen. Before setting out, make sure you have a spade: you need one to use the excavation prompt.
Where to find and dig up the dragon bones
- Start at the woodcutters’ camp southwest of Bylany.
- Follow the stream west into the woods, then take the upstream branch. Use the quest objective as well as the terrain to stay on course.
- Look for the landmarks. Guides point to a stump with mushrooms, fallen trees, and a ruined hunting hide on the way to a rocky clearing.
- At the dig site, interact with the exposed bones and dig. The prompt requires a spade.
Walkthroughs describe the route in different shorthand, so do not rely on a compass direction alone. Follow the in-game objective and use the landmarks together.
Why you should hurry—and what to do if the hole is empty
The bones can be gone if Henry delays; another group may reach the site and leave an empty hole. The available walkthroughs do not establish a dependable exact timer duration or a single trigger, so there is no reliable countdown to plan around.
Once you begin the investigation, avoid sleeping, waiting, or taking unrelated detours. Go directly through the abbot, Slava, Vashek, and the dig site. If you arrive to find an empty hole, one guide recommends loading a save from before the visit to the abbot and trying the route again without delays.

Resolve the confrontation and choose what to do with the bones
After Henry digs, Leopold’s party and Gerhard’s people may be involved in the confrontation. Guides describe negotiation, choosing a side, sharing or surrendering pieces, and combat. The available outcomes can depend on dialogue checks and on how many pieces Henry retains, so focus on the actual items you have when making the final hand-in.
| Choice | What the guides establish | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Return the bones to Slava | Church-aligned outcome associated with destroying the bones and gaining reputation; no cash reward is specified. | Players prioritizing the church-aligned result over immediate payment. |
| Give the complete find to Gerhard | Gerhard pays 275 Groschen for the bones. | Players who want the stated immediate cash reward. |
| Retain the Dragon Claw | The Legacy of the Forge walkthrough reports that the Dragon Claw is used in the Dragon Fang Axe recipe. It does not establish that a particular partial hand-in always preserves the claw. | Players pursuing that expansion’s crafting goal; pay attention to which pieces Henry keeps during the confrontation. |
The 200 Groschen Vashek may charge for directions is separate from Gerhard’s 275-Groschen payment. Guides also describe partial hand-ins and negotiation, but the result can depend on the pieces Henry retains and how the encounter ends. If you want the Dragon Claw, do not assume that any particular split guarantees you keep it.
