Verdict: Kingdom Come: Deliverance II is a strong fit if you want a sprawling, historically grounded RPG whose world, quests, and character systems reward patience and attention. Its deliberate combat and occasional early-game busywork are real trade-offs, not flaws every player will overlook. If you want quick progression, frictionless fighting, or a tightly paced main story, its systems-heavy approach may wear thin.

What kind of RPG is Kingdom Come: Deliverance II?

Released on February 4, 2025, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II is an action RPG developed by Warhorse Studios and published by Deep Silver. It is set amid civil war in 15th-century Bohemia, with Henry of Skalitz—a man of humble origins—pulled into a story of revenge, betrayal, and discovery. His journey reaches from a blacksmith’s forge to the courts of kings, giving the game room to move between ordinary life and political upheaval. Metacritic’s game overview describes that premise.

The appeal is not simply medieval scenery. The game’s role-playing systems, quests, and combat ask you to pay attention to how you approach situations. Critics highlighted its believable world and layered quests, but the same density that supports immersion can also make the experience feel cumbersome.

What critics say about the world, quests, and combat

On the PC page, Metacritic listed an 89 Metascore from 77 critic reviews as of October 8, 2026, marked “Generally Favorable.” That snapshot comprised 73 positive and four mixed reviews, with none negative. Its all-platform overview showed an 89 from 77 critic reviews and an 8.7 user score from 5,092 ratings. Scores and user-rating totals can change, so treat these as dated snapshots rather than permanent ratings. Metacritic’s ratings page provides the figures.

The positive response centers on the convincing setting, quests with layers beyond simple errands, expansive role-playing systems, and improvements to combat. Wccftech’s review, listed by Metacritic on February 3, 2025, called it “a resounding success,” praising “one of the most believable game worlds ever” and its compelling quests and RPG systems. That is one publication’s assessment, not a guarantee that every player will find the systems enjoyable. Metacritic’s critic-review page includes the excerpt.

The friction is part of the decision

Not every critic found the pacing or mechanics equally inviting. Dexerto’s review excerpt warns that combat and survival changes may not win over players who found the first game too difficult or tedious. VG247’s excerpt describes the opening stretch as potentially busywork-heavy before the game develops in its second half. These are individual critical judgments, but they point to a consistent expectation: this is not a streamlined adventure that rushes you from one major story beat to the next.

Who is likely to enjoy it?

A good fit if you want

  • A detailed medieval setting that makes everyday systems part of the role-playing experience.
  • Quests and character interactions that give you room to shape how Henry approaches the world.
  • Combat and progression that reward attention, practice, and patience rather than immediate mastery.
  • A dense adventure where immersion matters more than keeping every mission brisk.

Think twice if you want

  • Fast power progression or combat that feels immediately effortless.
  • A tightly paced main quest with little time spent on lower-key tasks.
  • A sequel that removes the difficult or tedious qualities you disliked in the first game.

The key trade-off is systemic detail: it can make the world feel more convincing, while adding friction to combat, survival, and pacing. The game’s challenge is not a universal measure of difficulty; whether it feels rewarding or irritating depends on how much deliberate role-playing you enjoy.

Platforms and what to check before buying

Metacritic lists the game for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X. Its platform listing does not establish comparative frame rates, resolution, patch state, or which version performs best. Choose a platform you own, and consult current platform-specific technical information if performance is a deciding factor; there is not enough verified evidence here to recommend one version over another.

Content to be aware of

Steam’s age-gate description lists frequent depictions of violence, killing, brutality, and blood; extensive coarse language and crude humor; and adult themes, alcohol, sexual activity, and nudity. Check the Steam listing if those content details matter to your decision.

Final review verdict

Kingdom Come: Deliverance II is most compelling for players who want to inhabit a demanding medieval RPG rather than simply pass through one. Its praised world, layered quests, and broad systems make a persuasive case for the journey; early busywork and deliberate combat mean it is not the safest recommendation for anyone seeking a friction-free, tightly paced adventure. If its slower, more involved style sounds like a feature rather than an obstacle, it is an easy game to put on your shortlist.
