Kareem Choudhry’s departure from Microsoft was reported on April 5, 2024—not as part of the Xbox restructuring announced in 2026. The later company announcements document separate workforce changes; they do not establish a connection to Choudhry’s earlier exit.
When did Kareem Choudhry leave Microsoft?
Windows Central reported on April 5, 2024, that Choudhry was leaving Microsoft after 26 years at the company. Its report described the departure as circumstantial and said it was not part of the wider reorganization discussed at the time. No primary Microsoft or Choudhry announcement explaining his departure was located in the sources reviewed. Read Windows Central’s 2024 report.
Was his departure caused by the later Xbox reorganization?
The available dates and statements do not support that conclusion. Microsoft described workforce and organizational changes in July 2026, more than two years after Choudhry’s departure was reported. Neither that communication nor Xbox’s later update links the changes to his exit.
Microsoft’s July 2026 announcement
On July 6, 2026, Microsoft EVP and Chief People Officer Amy Coleman wrote that the company was eliminating around 4,800 roles, with changes mostly in Commercial and Xbox. She said of Xbox: “In XBOX, we are restructuring to position the business for long-term success.” Microsoft’s July 6 communication.

Xbox’s September 2026 update
Xbox Wire reported on September 22, 2026, that 268 roles were being eliminated across Halo Studios, other first-party studios, and Xbox management and central functions. The update said actions completed since July had brought Xbox roughly three-quarters of the way through previously announced restructuring. Xbox Chief Content Officer Matt Booty wrote: “I am deeply grateful for what our colleagues have built, and I know how difficult today will be for those leaving and the teams around them.” Xbox Wire’s September 22 update.
Why did Kareem Choudhry leave Xbox?
A named, attributable explanation for Choudhry’s departure is not established by the available reporting. Windows Central characterized the exit as circumstantial, but that is the outlet’s account, not a direct explanation from Choudhry or Microsoft. It would be inaccurate to present the 2026 restructuring as the reason.

What was Choudhry known for at Xbox?
Windows Central’s 2024 report associated Choudhry with Xbox backward compatibility, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and emerging-technology work. That is reported background, not a current-role description or an official Microsoft biography. Windows Central’s report provides that context.
