Start co-op from the Main Menu or Pause menu
Nintendo provides two ways to start local co-op:
- From the Main Menu: Select your save file, then begin co-op.
- During play: Open the Pause menu and select Play Co-op.
Both routes lead to the same two-player setup. Nintendo’s directions do not list a separate progress milestone or unlock requirement. Nintendo’s co-op instructions
Who controls each character?
Player 1 controls Kirby, who can float and inhale enemies. Player 2 controls Bandana Waddle Dee, who fights with a spear; Player 2 can join or leave during play. It is not a second-Kirby mode. Nintendo’s product listing specifies one to two players on a single system. Nintendo product listing
Is co-op online?
The co-op described by Nintendo is same-system play, not online multiplayer. Nintendo’s developer interview says a second player can join as Bandana Waddle Dee during a stage by sharing a Joy-Con. The interview also explains that the camera is designed to keep Bandana Waddle Dee visible while following Kirby, with both characters shown on screen. Nintendo developer interview, March 24, 2022

Nintendo Support lists Ver. 1.1.0, released August 20, 2025, as adding Nintendo Switch 2 Edition support when played on Switch 2 and addressing gameplay issues on Switch 2 and Switch. Those update notes do not mention a change to the co-op start procedure.
