Knee Deep is a 2015 swamp-noir adventure by Prologue Games, divided into three acts: Wonderland, Festival and Boomtown. Romana Teague, Jack Bellet and K.C. Gaddis investigate an apparent suicide in the Florida town of Cypress Knee, uncovering political, commercial and religious forces behind it. The finale deliberately refuses to settle whether Rabbit is a genuine spirit or the product of injury, trauma and manipulation. Your choices determine who betrays the group, who survives the Act 2 crisis and how that survivor behaves in Act 3, but they do not produce entirely unrelated final stories.
What kind of game is Knee Deep?
Knee Deep combines a detective story with the grammar of live theatre. Its locations arrive as stage spaces that rotate, transform or reveal new playing areas. Characters sometimes address the audience, and the camera treats conversations like scenes in a production rather than like conventional, cinematic adventure-game exchanges. That presentation is not a decorative frame around the mystery: it is the way the game asks you to understand what is happening.

The setting is Cypress Knee, a fictional backwater Florida town shaken by the apparent on-location suicide of a washed-up actor. Three investigators approach the event from different professional and personal angles:

- Jack Bellet is a local reporter whose knowledge of Cypress Knee gives him access to its people and institutions.
- K.C. Gaddis is a private investigator who approaches the case through observation, questioning and professional skepticism.
The initial death is only the entry point. Each act moves the investigation from competing accounts of one incident toward a larger conspiracy, then toward an uncanny question about identity, resurrection and what counts as a performance. The game is therefore both a mystery to investigate and a show the player helps stage.

The three episodes at a glance
| Act | What it does | Choice and story function |
|---|---|---|
| Wonderland | Introduces Cypress Knee, the apparent suicide and the three investigators. It establishes the theatrical format and the town’s conflicting stories. | Early decisions set the state that determines which person is positioned to undermine the group after Act 2. |
| Festival | Expands the case into local politics, commercial interests and a religious-cult dimension. Trust and protection become immediate concerns. | The Act 2 crisis determines who survives. Even choosing to save nobody still leaves one survivor. |
| Boomtown | Turns the noir investigation toward resurrection, altered identity and metaphysical uncertainty. | The survivor reassesses earlier actions, while the ending leaves Rabbit’s nature and the story’s reality unresolved. |
The acts are state-dependent rather than three wholly separate campaigns. Variables can swap characters and lines at key moments, so a replay may show different confrontations or appearances while retaining the same broad progression from investigation to uncanny coda.
Act 1: Wonderland explained
The apparent suicide and the town’s competing stories
Wonderland gives you the basic case: a failed actor appears to have taken his own life while working in or around Cypress Knee. The circumstances are suspicious enough to attract all three investigators, but they do not begin with a shared theory or a single method. Romana looks for a compelling public story, Jack weighs local relationships and reputation, and K.C. tests what people say against what can be established.
The act’s most important revelation is structural rather than a single plot twist. Cypress Knee does not have one authoritative account of itself. Residents, local power brokers, religious figures and people connected to the production offer versions that overlap, contradict one another or conceal their motives. The stage-like scenes make those contradictions visible: the player is watching people perform identities as much as supplying evidence in a case.

Dialogue choices in Wonderland are not merely cosmetic. Developer Wes Platt described the act as selecting the person who will “screw you over at the end of Act 2.” In practical terms, your decisions establish relationship and loyalty variables that determine which character is placed in the betrayer or underminer role when the next act reaches its crisis.
That does not mean one early line creates a secret, isolated ending. The game tracks a pattern of decisions, then uses that state to alter who appears in a crucial position and which lines are spoken. Treat Act 1 as the foundation for the later social conflict, not as a sequence of disconnected conversation bonuses.
Act 2: Festival explained
From one death to Cypress Knee’s machinery
Festival widens the investigation. The apparent suicide now sits inside the town’s political and commercial dealings, shady local interests and a religious-cult dimension. The festival setting brings together people who need Cypress Knee to look prosperous, people who want to control its future and people who interpret events through a religious or ideological system.

The order of scenes can change according to your earlier decisions, but the act’s central purpose remains consistent: it shows how the town’s institutions produce pressure, loyalty and misinformation. The investigators are no longer simply asking who caused one death. They must decide whom to believe, whom to protect and whether exposing the truth will put another person in danger.

The betrayal and survival decision
At the end of Act 2, the state created in Wonderland determines who is most likely to betray or undermine the group. This is the game’s clearest consequence system. The selected character’s actions shape the crisis and determine the emotional position from which Act 3 begins.
There is an important qualification: choosing not to save anyone does not create a no-survivor ending. Platt explained that one person survives even in that outcome. The identity of that survivor can vary, and the survivor’s later doubts become part of Boomtown. In other words, the choice controls the cost and the person who carries it forward, not whether the story continues at all.
What the Festival ending is doing
The Act 2 ending is designed to make trust a concrete consequence rather than an abstract theme. A character you protected may be the one whose choices damage the group; a character you distrusted may be the person left to carry the investigation. The game does not present a simple morality meter in which the “kind” option guarantees safety. It uses your accumulated decisions to rearrange responsibility.
Act 3: Boomtown explained
Why the tone becomes uncanny
Boomtown is where the swamp-noir investigation stops behaving like a conventional case. Resurrection enters the plot, and events begin to support several explanations at once: something supernatural may be operating in Cypress Knee; characters may be staging or manipulating what others see; or injury, trauma and damaged perception may be turning ordinary events into an impossible narrative.
A review characterized the third act as becoming “a bit too uncanny.” That tonal shift is deliberate. The game has spent two acts showing how people perform roles for one another; now it asks whether the apparently impossible is another performance, a metaphysical fact or a viewpoint distorted by violence. The uncertainty is not a missing explanatory scene that a later branch secretly supplies.

The theatrical metaphor reaches its fullest form
When several protagonists interact, you are not always operating as one detective with the others functioning as ordinary non-player characters. Platt said his goal was for players to feel less like “Hey, I’m playing this character” and more like “Hey, I’m putting on this show.” The rotating sets, direct address and changing character assignments all support that idea.
That framing also explains why the final act can feel less like a solved crime and more like a production that has escaped its original stage. The characters’ identities, the town’s stories and the player’s choices have become parts of the same performance.
Who is Rabbit?
The supernatural interpretation
Under the supernatural reading, Rabbit is a Native spirit or another metaphysical force speaking through Woodstep. Woodstep first appears to be an ordinary disgruntled former employee. In Act 2, he says that church thugs attacked him behind the recreational vehicle, after which Rabbit speaks through him. The resurrection material in Boomtown, followed by Rabbit and Monroe’s movement beyond Cypress Knee, supports the idea that the story’s supernatural rules are real inside the fiction.
This interpretation treats Rabbit’s appearances and the later impossible events as connected manifestations rather than isolated hallucinations. It also makes the Kentucky scene a sign that the force involved is not confined to the Florida town.
The psychological or literalist interpretation
The game never requires you to accept Rabbit as a literal spirit. Platt offered the alternative that Woodstep may have suffered a concussion and need medical attention. On that reading, “Rabbit” could be a persona, a trauma response, a delusion or a deliberate manipulation by an injured person. The strange dialogue and behavior remain meaningful, but they do not prove paranormal agency.
The materialist reading can also include ordinary conspiracy: frightened people may exploit Woodstep’s condition, and other characters may interpret his behavior through local beliefs. Because the game withholds an objective confirmation, this explanation cannot be disproved by a single line in the finale.

Is Rabbit real?
The most accurate answer is that Rabbit may be real, but Knee Deep is designed so that the player cannot prove it. The ambiguity is the ending’s subject, not a puzzle accidentally left unfinished. Both readings account for important events, and each changes what the final images mean.
What does the Kentucky gas-station scene mean?
Near the end, Rabbit and Monroe are seen walking past a gas station in Kentucky. This is not presented as a normal travel epilogue that explains where every character went or closes the investigation with a factual report. It is a destabilizing coda.
Several interpretations remain consistent with what the game shows:
- Monroe may be connected to the same force or transformation associated with Rabbit.
- The story may have expanded into a larger metaphysical geography, with Cypress Knee only one location in it.
- The characters may be continuing a performance outside the town and outside the stage space the player has learned to recognize.
- Under the psychological reading, the image may represent a subjective or symbolic transition rather than literal supernatural travel.
Platt described Rabbit and Monroe as “agents of change and action.” That description identifies their thematic function without turning the scene into a decoded factual reveal. The image signals continuation and consequence, not a conventional answer to every mystery.

Knee Deep has meaningful branching, but the available evidence does not support describing it as a collection of completely separate finales. The strongest, documented variations are these:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Choice effect | What changes | What does not change |
|---|---|---|
| Act 1 relationship and trust decisions | Which person is positioned to betray or undermine the group at the end of Act 2; some lines and scene states. | The three-act structure and the investigation’s movement toward the Festival crisis. |
| Act 2 protection or rescue decisions | Who survives the crisis and which character carries the consequences into Boomtown. | At least one person survives, even if you choose to save nobody. |
| Survivor state | The survivor has second thoughts about earlier actions, changing later behavior and dialogue. | The existence of Act 3’s uncanny material and its unresolved interpretations. |
| Conversation and scene choices | Character appearances, lines and the order or presentation of some moments. | A guarantee of a wholly different, fully explained ending for every dialogue path. |
This makes replay useful for seeing different responsibility patterns and character reactions. It does not make a completionist branch chart necessary to understand the central ending, because the unresolved Rabbit question remains unresolved by design.

Who survives Knee Deep?
The game does not have one universally fixed survivor independent of player choices. The Act 2 crisis selects a survivor based on the state built through earlier decisions. Even the apparent “save no one” option leaves one person alive, and that person then experiences doubts about the consequences of what happened.
Survival should therefore be read as a narrative role, not simply a win condition. The survivor is the character who carries the moral and investigative aftermath into Boomtown. Their changed perspective helps connect the social betrayal of Act 2 to the metaphysical uncertainty of Act 3.
How to interpret the ending without forcing a single answer
- Separate observable events from explanations. Woodstep is attacked, Rabbit speaks through or appears alongside him, resurrection is introduced and Rabbit and Monroe are later seen in Kentucky. Those are the events the game presents.
- List what each interpretation explains. A spirit reading accounts for the resurrection and the movement beyond Cypress Knee; a psychological reading accounts for Woodstep’s injury and the possibility that Rabbit is a persona or delusion.
- Notice the stage metaphor. Characters repeatedly perform identities, address an audience and occupy changing sets. The game gives you reasons to question whether a scene is literal, staged or remembered.
- Accept the unresolved remainder. No branch supplies a definitive medical report, supernatural proof or omniscient narrator. Treating one interpretation as confirmed goes beyond what the game establishes.
On that basis, the ending is neither a secret conventional solution nor a meaningless non-answer. It is a controlled ambiguity: the investigation reveals systems of power and betrayal, then leaves reality itself open to interpretation.
Release and access notes
Knee Deep was released on July 6, 2015, as a complete three-act title. The official PC listing includes the campaign, a Season Ticket option and act-specific soundtrack products; the soundtrack is also associated with Prologue Games’ official Bandcamp presence. The listing supports Remote Play on TV and VR access, although those features do not change the story or its endings.
For PC players, check the current system requirements before installing. The official listing warns that the game is not compatible with macOS 10.15 Catalina or later. That is an operating-system limitation, not a narrative bug, and changing choices cannot affect it.
Bottom line on the episodes and ending
Wonderland establishes the death, the investigators and the choice state that determines later betrayal. Festival exposes Cypress Knee’s political, commercial and religious machinery and decides who survives the crisis. Boomtown turns the investigation uncanny, uses resurrection and altered identity to challenge a literal reading, and ends with Rabbit and Monroe moving through Kentucky as “agents of change and action.” Rabbit can be understood as a real spirit or as the result of injury, trauma and manipulation; the game intentionally gives no proof that closes the argument. The choices matter most through betrayal, survival and survivor behavior, while the final ambiguity is shared by the game’s major paths.
