Kojima Productions said on September 20, 2026, that PHYSINT is moving forward with Xbox and that its relationship with PlayStation remains strong. The studio’s statement addressed speculation about the project’s publishing change, the studio’s finances and Death Stranding’s performance; its claims about the studio’s health and profitability are its own, not independently verified financial findings.
What did Kojima Productions say?
Kojima Productions said it generally avoids responding to online speculation, but chose to address claims that had reached fans, creative partners and colleagues. The studio urged readers to treat the reports skeptically, saying: “None of the claims written came from any official or on-the-record source.” That sentence appears in the English translation reproduced by Inven Global, which dates the statement to September 20, 2026.

The studio’s central reassurance was that PHYSINT is proceeding with Xbox and its relationship with PlayStation remains strong. The Washington Post reproduced part of the statement as saying the studio is in a “healthy, profitable state” and that development on PHYSINT “continues to move forward with Xbox.” That is the studio’s characterization; no independent financial figures were provided.

Kojima Productions says its relationship with PlayStation remains strong. That is the studio’s stated position, not an announcement that PlayStation is publishing PHYSINT. The project had originally been announced as a collaboration between PlayStation and Kojima Productions, but the studio’s statement says PHYSINT is now moving forward with Xbox.

Why did PHYSINT’s publishing arrangement change?
No specific official explanation for the change appears in the sources reviewed. In an interview reported by the Washington Post, Hideo Kojima said Sony told the studio in mid-June 2026 that it would stop funding PHYSINT, and that Sony gave him no reason. Kojima Productions later found a new publisher in Xbox.
Budget, schedule and exclusivity have been discussed in reporting as possible factors, but they remain theories rather than confirmed reasons. Kojima Productions says the claims circulating about the situation did not come from official or on-the-record sources. Neither the studio nor PlayStation has provided a specific official explanation in the cited coverage.

What is known about PHYSINT’s development?
In the same Washington Post interview, Kojima said the project had a written plot and concept, including storyboards; that the studio had begun making 3D models and scanning actors; and that it was experimenting with game engines without having chosen a final one. These are interview details, not confirmation of a release date, launch window, final platform list or completed production milestones.
The statement does not give a budget, schedule or sales figures, nor does it independently verify the studio’s profitability. Its reference to colleagues with whom it has worked for “three decades” is the studio’s own description of the relationship’s duration.

The statement addressed reporting and speculation involving PHYSINT’s publishing change and production plans, Kojima Productions’ relationship with PlayStation, and the commercial performance of the Death Stranding franchise. The statement does not provide new sales figures or a detailed account of Death Stranding’s performance.
The Sony newsroom’s June 25, 2026 PlayStation Studios update is a separate announcement, not a Sony response to Kojima Productions’ September statement.
