The announced Knights of the Old Republic remake is intended to modernize the 2003 RPG from the ground up, but its developers have not publicly detailed specific gameplay changes. Aspyr’s 2021 announcement promised modern technology, features and visuals while aiming to preserve the story and characters. That is a broad creative goal—not confirmation that combat, dialogue, quests or progression will work differently.
What has actually been confirmed?
On September 9, 2021, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that Aspyr, Lucasfilm Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment were remaking the classic RPG from the ground up. Aspyr lead producer Ryan Treadwell said the team was rebuilding it with “modern tech, features, visuals and more” while maintaining the integrity of its story and characters. Sony described the work as covering almost every aspect of the original.
Those statements establish the scope and intent, not a feature-by-feature specification. “Modern features” does not tell us which mechanics will change, and the stated aim to preserve the story and characters is not a scene-by-scene guarantee. Sony’s announcement remains the clearest public description of the remake’s goals.
What the 2003 original is like
The original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is a single-player BioWare RPG released on November 19, 2003, according to its Steam listing. Its party-based adventure features Force powers, lightsaber construction and travel aboard the Ebon Hawk. StarWars.com’s overview places the story four thousand years before the Galactic Empire, during a conflict between Jedi and Sith.
#1 Best Overall
- The following games are included in the cartridge: STAR WARS Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy (3.6 GB)
- STAR WARS Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast (1.1 GB)
- STAR WARS Episode I Racer (254 MB)
- STAR WARS Republic Commando (2.5 GB)
- STAR WARS: The Force Unleashed (3.4 GB)
The two listings differ on the number of worlds: Steam says eight, while StarWars.com says seven. Without specifying an edition and reconciling that discrepancy, a precise count is best avoided.
Which changes are still unknown?
The announcement does not explain how the remake will handle the original’s systems or content. In the sources available, no specific redesign has been confirmed for:

- Combat pacing, controls or whether combat remains real-time with pause.
- Dialogue, skill checks or the consequences of player choices.
- Character progression, Force powers or party management.
- Quests, encounters or any additions and cuts to the story.
These are sensible points to compare when detailed gameplay information is released, but they should not be treated as announced changes. The available statements support a promise of extensive modernization, not claims about particular mechanics.
