Project Windless is a single-player open-world action RPG from KRAFTON Montréal Studio, set in the universe of The Bird That Drinks Tears. Revealed on February 12, 2026, it follows a Rekon warrior in an era more than a thousand years before the novels. KRAFTON has announced development for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro, but has not given a release date.
What is Project Windless?
Project Windless is a single-player open-world action RPG being developed by KRAFTON Montréal Studio. PlayStation published its reveal on February 12, 2026. KRAFTON had previously announced active development of an untitled game based on the novels on August 5, 2022.
The studio describes an open world intended to offer little hand-holding, letting players choose their routes, explore, uncover stories, form alliances, and wage war. Creative director Patrik Méthé said the team made it an open world “with as little hand-holding as possible.” These are design goals from the developer, not independently verified descriptions of finished gameplay.
Is Project Windless based on The Bird That Drinks Tears?
Yes. The game uses the universe of The Bird That Drinks Tears, a Korean fantasy novel series created and written by Yeong-do Lee. Rather than directly retelling the books’ familiar story, Project Windless goes back more than a thousand years to a turning point the novels barely touch on. That gives the game room to tell a story in the same world and history without presenting itself as a direct adaptation of the books’ central narrative.

Who do you play as in Project Windless?
You play as a Rekon, a member of a nomadic race of humanoid birds. KRAFTON describes Rekons as large and physically powerful, but also solitary and vulnerable; they are known for their fear of water. The studio says it chose the warrior for the game’s one-versus-many combat concept, pointing to the character’s speed, reach, and physical presence.
What has KRAFTON said about exploration and combat?
KRAFTON’s reveal describes player-directed exploration and a world where players can uncover stories, build alliances, and wage war. The studio also says encounters can pit the player against dozens, and sometimes hundreds, of enemies, as well as giant creatures. It describes enemy crowds as tactical: they may flank or surround the player and react to what the player does. These scale and behavior details are the developer’s description of its intended design, not a published performance measure or hands-on finding.

What platforms is Project Windless coming to?
KRAFTON has announced development for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro. The February 2026 announcement does not confirm other platforms, so a broader platform list should not be assumed.
