Lanayru Mine and Lanayru Desert Walkthrough: Skyward Sword HD

From the first Lanayru landing, the route leads through Lanayru Mine, across the quicksand and machinery of Lanayru Desert, and to the buried Lanayru Mining Facility. Use Timeshift Stones to restore old machinery and terrain, save stamina for short sand crossings, and use bombs, the Beetle, and Ampilus shells to reach targets or make temporary paths.

Lanayru Mine: from the landing to the desert exit

Find the first Goddess Cube and enter the mine

1. Head down from the landing and circle behind the tower to find the visible Goddess Cube. Strike it with a Skyward Strike if you want to collect it; it is optional.
2. Save at the Bird Statue, then enter the cavern. Defeat the Keese, push the first cart off its track, move it against the wall, and use it to climb up. Deal with the Yellow Chuchus and continue.

Use the Timeshift Stone to move the carts

1. Strike the Timeshift Stone in the next room to restore the area to its past state. Ride the nearby cart to the northern room and collect the Red Rupee if you wish.
2. Return and push the second cart into the Timeshift Stone’s effect before riding it to the southern section. If the cart does not travel as expected, check that it is within the restored area.
3. Collect the Ancient Flower. Put a bomb in the statue’s bowl to drop the structure and open the passage.

Cross the quicksand rooms

Quicksand is crossed in short bursts, not by trying to run the whole room at once. Start each dash with stamina available, sprint to the next safe platform, and recover there before setting out again.

• Use bombs to knock down the bomb-holder structures. One conceals a crawlspace with a Red Rupee.
• In the larger room, either bomb the Electro Spumes or avoid them as you move between platforms.
• Move the cart along its track. In the narrow passage, roll bombs across the sand to break the rocks; then send the Beetle to strike the Timeshift Stone revealed beneath one of them. The restored grass provides a route onward.

Continue through the large room and collect any optional treasure you want. Ride the activated cart north to leave the mine and enter Lanayru Desert.

Lanayru Desert: reach the Temple of Time area

Restore the first safe route

1. Save at the Bird Statue. Bomb the nearby rocks to uncover a Timeshift Stone, activate it, and climb the vines that appear. Collect the Ancient Flower.
2. As you approach the open sand, watch for Ampilus. Use the Beetle to carry bombs to distant targets or help defeat them. An Ampilus shell can serve as a temporary platform across sand.

Cross the broad sand and the sand waterfall

Use the Ampilus shells where there is no walkable path, and use safe ground to recover between crossings. Map and beacon markers help you follow the safer lanes.

1. In the first broad sand area, use a shell to reach the central safe ground. The southern Goddess Cube is optional.
2. Use a second shell crossing to continue west to the Bird Statue and cart shortcut.
3. At the area where sand flows like a waterfall, ride an Ampilus shell eastward, moving between safe platforms. Leave north through the cave toward the Temple of Time area.

The route beyond the Temple of Time continues back into the desert. The next section covers the separate generator puzzle that reveals the Lanayru Mining Facility entrance.

How do I open the Lanayru Mining Facility?

Use the map and dowsing to locate all three power generators. Each requires reaching a device and activating its generator; the northern and southeast routes also use an Ampilus egg carried by the Beetle.

Activate the first generator

1. Lower the bomb-holder structure and uncover the generator.
2. Reveal and activate the nearby Timeshift Stone.
3. Insert the sword into the generator and turn the dial left.

Activate the northern generator

1. Bomb the cracked wall and uncover the Timeshift Stone beneath the central boulder. Activate it.
2. Carry an Ampilus egg with the Beetle to the electric device. Step on the orange tile, then strike the egg into the socket.
3. Activate the generator in the next room.

Activate the southeast generator

1. Follow the safe route across the sand and enter the building. Uncover the Timeshift Stone, then use an Ampilus shell to reach the northern part.
2. Collect the optional Eldin Ore chest if desired, then activate the Timeshift effect.
3. Carry an Ampilus egg to the device and activate the final generator.

Set the main generator dials

Return to the main power generator. Set the three layers in this order: green, red, yellow. Turn the green dial directly left, the red dial to bottom-right, and the yellow dial straight up. The buried Lanayru Mining Facility entrance is revealed.

What each tool does on this route

• Timeshift Stones: restore nearby machinery and terrain to an earlier state. Carts sometimes need to be pushed into the stone’s effect before they can be used.
• Stamina: reserve it for short sprints between safe platforms in quicksand, and recover on solid ground.
• Bombs and the Beetle: reach distant bomb holders or openings, break rocks, and activate objects Link cannot reach directly.
• Ampilus shells: provide temporary platforms across open sand where there is no safe walking route.

Skyward Sword HD controls

Nintendo’s Skyward Sword HD page says the Switch edition supports motion controls as well as button-only controls. The button-only option allows play in handheld mode, on Nintendo Switch Lite, and with a Pro Controller.
