Larian RPGs put more of your agency into experimenting with rules and seeing how the world reacts; BioWare’s Dragon Age games put more of it into shaping a character-led campaign through relationships, political choices, and dramatic consequences. That is a difference in emphasis, not a split between “systems” and “story”: both studios make companion-focused fantasy RPGs with choices and long-form narratives. The clearest comparison is between Baldur’s Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin 2 on Larian’s side, and Dragon Age: Origins and The Veilguard as examples of how Dragon Age has changed over time.

If you want to improvise tactics and solve problems through a flexible ruleset, start with Larian. If you want a more directed campaign whose emotional center is a fellowship and its relationships, start with Dragon Age. Baldur’s Gate 3 is a useful bridge for players drawn to both.

What makes Larian games different from Dragon Age?

The distinction is where each style concentrates player agency. Larian’s games invite you to ask what the game’s rules and world will let you do; Dragon Age more often asks what your decision means for your protagonist, companions, factions, and the unfolding campaign.

Larian describes Baldur’s Gate 3 as a player-driven role-playing game based on Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition. Its design aims for the world to respond logically to player actions, with systems filling some of the role a human game master would play. That approach can make the method you use to resolve a problem part of the story. A fight, quest, or conversation is not only a sequence of authored beats; it is also a situation in which you can try to combine the tools the game gives you.

Dragon Age also gives players consequential decisions. BioWare writers have discussed agency in terms of the story the team wants to tell and the importance of letting the world reflect player choices. In practice, those choices often carry their weight through relationships, political alignments, and the emotional cost of a decision. The campaign’s authored structure provides a frame for those consequences.

A useful shorthand is: Larian foregrounds the question “What can the game do with the action I attempted?” Dragon Age foregrounds “What does this choice mean to my character and the people around them?” Neither question belongs exclusively to one studio. Both games can deliver story through play and make choices matter; they make different parts of that experience most visible.

How do their combat systems differ?

Baldur’s Gate 3 offers turn-based combat grounded in D&D rules, while The Veilguard emphasizes fluid, direct character control alongside tactical decisions about abilities and companions. That difference affects not just speed, but the kind of problem-solving each encounter invites.

Comparison Larian: Baldur’s Gate 3 Dragon Age: The Veilguard
Combat feel Turn-based, rules-forward encounters based on D&D 5th Edition Fluid moment-to-moment controls, with tactical decisions
Decision emphasis Dice-like chance, character abilities, and experimentation with available systems Enemy weaknesses and resistances, ability timing, and companion combinations
Party role Party composition and character capabilities expand possible approaches Two companions accompany the player on missions; Primer and Detonator interactions let abilities work together
Respecialization Respec options are part of the character-building toolkit Official progression materials describe respecialization

The table describes these specific games, not every release from either studio. Dragon Age: Origins is a useful classic BioWare reference, but the franchise’s combat and presentation have shifted over time. Similarly, this comparison should not flatten Divinity: Original Sin 2 and Baldur’s Gate 3 into one identical combat design.

In Baldur’s Gate 3, taking time to consider a turn can be part of the appeal. D&D-derived rules, dice-based checks, and character choices such as class and abilities support multiple ways to approach a situation. Players who enjoy pausing to think through a tactical puzzle are likely to find Larian’s style compelling.

The Veilguard is a better fit if you want combat to move with a more immediate action-RPG rhythm while still asking you to make tactical choices. Its official materials emphasize fluid controls, enemy weaknesses and resistances, and coordinated abilities. The choice is not “thinking” versus “no tactics”; it is a slower, turn-based rules simulation versus more direct control and ability timing within an action-oriented flow.

Why do Larian games feel more reactive?

Larian makes system response a visible part of its design goal: actions should produce logical reactions, and the game’s rules should enable outcomes that feel connected to what the player tried. That can make experimentation feel like a core way to participate in the narrative rather than a detour from it.

In a systems-first game, the player may approach an obstacle by considering character abilities, party roles, chance, or the environment. The exact route can matter because the solution emerges from the player’s chosen method and the game’s response to it. The story is then partly shaped by the chain of actions that followed, not only by selecting among a small set of explicit dialogue decisions.

This is the sense in which Larian’s design can feel like tabletop play: the player proposes an approach, the rules determine what happens, and the result creates the next situation. It does not mean every possible action is supported or that outcomes are arbitrary. Rather, Larian’s stated aim is to preserve logical reactions and use systems to approximate some of the flexibility of a human game master.

Dragon Age can also make the world reflect decisions, but its agency more often sits in authored choices and their effects on the campaign. You decide whom to support, how to treat companions, or which cause or faction should prevail; the game gives those decisions meaning through story and character arcs. The dramatic payoff is less about discovering every possible way to interact with a situation and more about seeing how a choice changes the relationships and stakes of the story.

Which game has better companions and choices?

Neither approach is universally better. Larian companions are well suited to a world where characters have their own opinions and participate in a reactive sandbox; Dragon Age companions are especially suited to a carefully staged ensemble drama whose arcs help carry the campaign.

Larian describes its Origin characters as playable protagonists or recruitable companions with backstories, quests, motivations, and opinions. Their attitudes can influence what the player should do, and relationships can develop into friendship, romance, rivalry, or enmity. Companions are therefore both people to get to know and participants in the same systems-driven adventure as the player.

Dragon Age also puts companions at the center, but stresses their place in the campaign’s emotional structure. In The Veilguard, official materials describe companion and faction stories as affecting later stages of the game. Companion development is tied to quests, conversations, bonds, and coordinated combat. The characters are not simply party slots: their relationships and story arcs are part of what gives the wider crisis its emotional shape.

Choices work in parallel ways. Larian’s emphasis is on what happens when a player acts within a responsive system; Dragon Age emphasizes the authored meaning and relational or political consequences of a decision. If you want a choice to feel like an expression of how your adventuring party operates, Larian may appeal more. If you want to weigh a decision through the loyalties and conflicts of a defined cast, Dragon Age may fit better.

How does the protagonist differ?

Larian gives players room to author an adventurer’s identity within a flexible ruleset, while Dragon Age more strongly frames its protagonist as the leader of a fellowship facing a crisis. Both approaches allow customization; they give that customization different narrative jobs.

In Baldur’s Gate 3, you can create a custom character and define qualities such as race, class, and appearance, or play as an Origin character. Larian’s description emphasizes that a custom hero remains embedded in the story’s central events. The protagonist can feel like a personal creation navigating a world that responds to the choices and methods the player brings to it.

Dragon Age protagonists are also customizable, but the franchise’s presentation—particularly for The Veilguard—puts more emphasis on becoming a fellowship’s leader and assembling a team in Thedas. The protagonist’s identity is closely bound to responsibility for that group and its place in a larger crisis. Relationships and leadership are not just optional character details; they help organize the campaign.

That distinction can guide character creation preferences. Choose Larian if you want to shape an adventurer and then discover how that identity interacts with a broad set of rules. Choose Dragon Age if the appeal is inhabiting a leader whose loyalties, relationships, and decisions define an ensemble story.

Is Dragon Age more cinematic than Divinity?

As a broad comparison, Dragon Age tends toward a more directed, dramatic campaign rhythm, while Larian foregrounds exploration and experimentation. But a simple “cinematic versus tactical” label misses that Baldur’s Gate 3 is also described by Larian as cinematic, and Larian’s games still tell character-driven stories.

The difference is how the presentation and systems work together. Dragon Age uses its fellowship, character arcs, and campaign stakes to carry players toward authored dramatic moments. Larian’s emphasis on reactivity makes the route between story moments more open to experimentation: a player’s improvised plan can help determine how a situation unfolds. Those tendencies affect pacing. A player who likes to pause, explore possibilities, and discover consequences may prefer Larian’s rhythm; one who wants the story to keep moving through a tightly framed ensemble drama may prefer Dragon Age.

There is also variation within both catalogues. Dragon Age: Origins supplies a classic BioWare baseline, while The Veilguard represents the franchise’s current official presentation. Larian’s Divinity games and Baldur’s Gate 3 share an interest in player-driven play, but they are distinct titles. It is more accurate to name the game being discussed than to assume that every entry has the same combat, pacing, or presentation.

Should I play Baldur’s Gate 3 or Dragon Age?

Choose based on the experience you want most: Baldur’s Gate 3 for turn-based rules, experimentation, and system-generated outcomes; Dragon Age for a more authored fantasy campaign centered on companions, relationships, and dramatic choices.

  • Start with Baldur’s Gate 3 if you want D&D-style rules, dice-influenced checks, turn-based combat, party experimentation, and room to improvise how you handle situations.
  • Start with Divinity: Original Sin 2 if you want an earlier, direct introduction to Larian’s systems-first identity and its emphasis on player-driven problem-solving.
  • Start with Dragon Age: Origins if you want the classic BioWare version of companion-led fantasy: a defined fellowship, relationship drama, and choices framed by a dramatic campaign.
  • Start with The Veilguard if you want the franchise’s current official emphasis on fluid action controls, a team of companions, faction stories, and coordinated abilities.

For someone drawn to both styles, Baldur’s Gate 3 is a useful bridge. It pairs Larian’s systems-driven approach with cinematic presentation, a substantial companion focus, D&D rules, and a player-driven story. Afterward, Divinity: Original Sin 2 is a natural choice for more Larian-style experimentation; Dragon Age: Origins is the clearer next step if the priority is classic BioWare ensemble drama.

What do the two traditions have in common?

Both are companion-based fantasy RPGs built around customizable heroes, party composition, dialogue choices, long-form worldbuilding, and consequential relationships. Both make room for friendship or romance, and both put political and moral decisions into a larger story.

That shared foundation is why the comparison can be misleading when reduced to “systems versus story.” Larian makes systems visibly generate story; Dragon Age more often uses story and relationships to give its systems emotional direction. One player can value both: enjoying the surprise of an improvised solution in one game and the weight of a companion’s reaction in another. The practical difference is how much time each game asks you to spend experimenting with a situation versus following the consequences of a character-led decision.

These are tendencies, not rules that every title follows without exception. The best way to compare them is to keep the anchor games in view: Baldur’s Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin 2 for Larian’s player-driven systems, and Dragon Age: Origins alongside The Veilguard for a series whose combat and presentation have evolved.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I play as a companion in Baldur’s Gate 3?

Yes. Larian presents its Origin characters as playable protagonists as well as recruitable companions, so an Origin can be your player character rather than only a member of the party. A custom character is another option and remains connected to the central events.

Does The Veilguard have tactical combat?

Yes, though its official description pairs tactical decisions with fluid, direct controls rather than turn-based play. The game also emphasizes choosing two mission companions and combining abilities through Primer and Detonator interactions.

Are romance and friendship possible in both series?

Yes. Larian describes companion relationships that can include friendship and romance, while EA presents friendship and romance as part of the broader Dragon Age experience. The role those bonds play in the campaign differs by game.

Is Baldur’s Gate 3 a good first Larian RPG?

It can be: it brings together the studio’s player-driven approach, D&D-based rules, a large companion focus, and cinematic presentation. If you specifically want an earlier example of Larian’s systemic design, Divinity: Original Sin 2 is another starting point.
