Last Train Home is a single-player strategy game built around two connected challenges: leading soldiers through real-time tactical missions and keeping their crew and armored train running on the journey home. Its appeal depends on whether that blend—and its story-driven, route-selecting campaign—sounds more compelling to you than an open-ended strategy sandbox.
What kind of game is Last Train Home?
Developed by Ashborne Games and published by THQ Nordic, Last Train Home follows soldiers of the Czechoslovak Legion attempting to return home amid civil war. Steam lists its release date as November 28, 2023, and classifies it with tags including strategy, real-time tactics, survival and management. The game is best understood as a hybrid of tactical combat and survival management, not as a train simulator.
You direct soldiers in missions, then manage the people and resources aboard an armored train. The two halves inform each other: tactical encounters test your command of the squad, while train and crew management make survival on the larger journey part of the strategy. Steam’s game listing describes command of both a legion and an armored train.
How do the tactical missions and train management fit together?
Real-time tactics
Missions put the focus on directing soldiers rather than operating the train. PC Gamer’s review highlights the flexibility of developing soldiers into roles beyond their initial combat function, citing riflemen, boiler-stokers, machine gunners, engineers, doctors, scouts and cooks. That role variety gives the squad-management side room to matter beyond simply choosing who carries a weapon.

- PICK YOUR BATTLES: Deploy your squad and complete diverse objectives in a series of real-time missions where specialist combat skills, planning, and superior tactics will lead you to victory.
- EQUIP YOUR SOLDIERS: Level up your men by unlocking new skills and gathering better equipment – discover their stories, assign medals, and help them rise up through the ranks.
- MANAGE YOUR CREW: Direct your soldiers in their non-combat roles onboard the train. Craft items, heal your wounded, and restore morale for the arduous journey home.
- UPGRADE YOUR TRAIN: Unlock your armored train’s full potential by upgrading the carriages and locomotive and oversee important maintenance work to keep it running.
- BASED ON HISTORICAL EVENTS: Last Train Home, is a compelling narrative that portrays the experiences of the Czechoslovak Legion and their valiant fight on behalf of the Entente powers during World War I.
Persistent crew and train management
Between missions, the train is the campaign’s moving home and a management problem. Crew members have jobs, and keeping the group and its resources functioning is part of the journey. The result is a game in which tactical success sits alongside the continuing demands of maintaining a vulnerable expedition.
Stealth has a control trade-off
PC Gamer also criticizes the controls as a weak fit for a robust stealth-strategy experience. That is one publication’s assessment, not a demonstrated consensus among players, but it points to a useful consideration: role flexibility does not necessarily mean every tactical approach feels equally well supported by the controls.

Is the campaign linear or open-ended?
Ashborne Games describes Last Train Home as a story-driven linear game with multiple route choices. Those choices shape the journey, but the developer’s description does not present the game as a sandbox with open-ended campaign freedom. If your main draw is managing an evolving story and making route decisions, that structure may suit you; if you want an unrestricted simulation to experiment in indefinitely, it is a different proposition.
How long is Last Train Home?
Ashborne Games estimates an average playthrough at 40 hours, describing it in its FAQ as the average time to beat the game. Treat that as the developer’s estimate, not a guaranteed completion time: time spent on missions, management, and individual play choices can vary. The FAQ also confirms the game is focused on single-player; the developer’s wording was, “We’re focusing on single player experience.”

What do reviews and player ratings say?
There are several distinct figures, and they should not be treated as if they measured the same thing. Steam’s listing returned 87% positive among 2,315 English-language reviews in the listing snapshot dated October 8, 2026; Steam’s review summary changes over time, so check the current listing for the latest figure.
Separately, THQ Nordic reported on December 11, 2024, that the game had a Metacritic score of 80 and that 86% of Steam user reviews praised it at that time. Those are publisher-reported, date-specific figures, not current scores. The critical picture in the cited review evidence includes both praise for soldiers’ flexible roles and a criticism of how controls support stealth, so a single rating cannot tell you whether the game’s particular balance will work for you.

Which edition should you look at?
Steam lists a Digital Deluxe Edition containing the base game, a digital artbook, the digital soundtrack and Last Train Home – Legion Tales DLC. THQ Nordic’s launch announcement likewise described the artbook, soundtrack and DLC as Deluxe contents. The artbook and soundtrack are digital extras, not physical items. Check the live storefront for current price and availability.
THQ Nordic’s October 25, 2023 FAQ said physical PC copies would be sold through retailers and named Amazon Germany, Amazon UK and Amazon France among examples. That release-era notice does not confirm current stock. Before buying a physical PC edition of Last Train Home through a retailer, check that the listing is live and verify region, language, condition and availability.

- Childhood memories in the making. Did you have a game that you loved as a child? That you took on vacation with your siblings? One quintessential rose-coloured game immortalised in memory? This is THAT game for THIS generation.
- 154 playing cards plus quick reference cards in an attractive sturdy metal tin, great for gifting and easy to travel with
- Created by a husband and wife team, for families. We designed a game that we wanted to play as adults but that could be played with anyone (including kids and our 80+ year old grandparents!)
- High replayability - games only take 5-10 minutes but can (and will!) be played over and over; the fast pace means you probably only JUST lost and everyone will immediately cry "Again!"
- Value for money! Why spend $50 on a field trip that is one use only when you can spend half that on a game that will end up costing you a few cents for each of the hundreds of times you've played it?
Who is Last Train Home for?
- Consider it if you want a single-player campaign that combines real-time squad missions with continuing crew and train management.
- Consider it if you prefer a directed story with meaningful route choices over a sandbox structure.
- Look closely at the tactical-control caveat if stealth is central to how you want to play; PC Gamer’s review specifically questions how well the controls support that approach.
- It may be a weaker fit if you are primarily looking for a train-driving simulation, multiplayer, or unrestricted sandbox play. The game’s premise and the developer’s description point instead to single-player strategy and a linear story campaign.
