If League of Legends feels slow, first check whether the problem is low FPS and stuttering or network lag: frame-rate drops point to rendering or system performance, while high ping, disconnections, and delayed actions can point to your connection. For low FPS, start with Riot’s in-game graphics settings, test changes in a Custom Game, and check requirements, drivers, and heat before considering new hardware. There is no universally best settings profile or guaranteed FPS increase; the right balance depends on your PC and preferences.
First identify what feels slow
Low FPS means the game is not drawing frames smoothly; stutter or sudden frame-rate drops are signs of a rendering or system-performance issue. Network lag is different: high ping, disconnections, or actions that arrive late may indicate a connection problem, even when the FPS counter is steady. Riot includes network checks in its low-frame-rate and lag troubleshooting.
- FPS drops or stutter: start with graphics settings, system requirements, graphics drivers, and possible overheating.
- High ping, disconnects, or delayed actions: try a wired connection instead of Wi-Fi and close programs using substantial network bandwidth.
Lower graphics settings and test the result
Riot Games Support’s October 7, 2026 guidance says there is no single graphics setup for every PC. Its suggested approach is to reduce demanding options, compare the result, then raise individual settings until you find a balance between smoothness and image quality. Use the Video menu rather than changing several system settings at once.
- In League, press Esc and choose Video.
- Lower Character Quality, Environment Quality, and Effects Quality. For a stronger performance test, set these quality options low, turn Shadows off, and disable Anti-Aliasing.
- Test in a Custom Game before joining a match. Compare the same scene or conditions, changing one setting or a small group at a time so you can tell which change helped.
- When performance is stable, raise individual quality options to your preference. If a change brings back stutter, revert it.
Riot’s graphics-settings guide recommends a Custom Game for testing new settings. Results depend on the computer and the scene; Riot does not publish a guaranteed FPS gain for these changes.

VSync: weigh tearing against responsiveness
Wait for Vertical Sync can reduce visible screen tearing. Riot says disabling it may improve performance or reduce input delay in some cases, but tearing may become more noticeable. Test both positions in a Custom Game and keep the one that feels better on your display.
Frame Rate Cap: avoid treating uncapped as automatically better
Use Frame Rate Cap as a setting to test, not a promise of higher performance. Compare stability and responsiveness with the cap options available in your Video menu. Choose based on how smoothly the game runs on your PC rather than assuming one setting is best for every system.

Check your system against Riot’s requirements
Settings changes cannot compensate for every hardware or operating-system limitation. Riot’s requirements page, published September 22, 2026, gives the following specifications; they are compatibility targets, not FPS benchmarks, and Riot cautions that a system meeting minimums can still have performance issues. Check the live requirements page because patch requirements can change.

For Windows, Riot specifies DirectX 11 feature level 11_0; the cited page says this requirement has applied since patch 25.21. Windows 10 must be Build 19041 or later.

macOS requirements listed by Riot
Riot’s listed macOS minimum and recommended entries share the following specifications: Apple M1, a Metal-capable GPU, 40 GB available storage, macOS 12, 8 GB unified memory, and 1680×1050 resolution. The listed graphics setting is Low at minimum and High when recommended. These are requirements, not measured performance results.
Try display changes only after the basic settings
If low FPS continues, compare fullscreen with your current display mode where available. Riot says fullscreen may help some systems, not all. Lowering resolution can reduce rendering work, but it also makes the image less sharp; test the trade-off rather than treating resolution reduction as a free improvement.

Update graphics drivers and check for overriding profiles
Graphics drivers can include game fixes and optimizations. Update through the official support path for your graphics hardware vendor. Riot also warns that graphics-control software profiles can override in-game settings, so check for a League profile if a setting appears not to take effect. Overheating is one possible cause of performance decline. If the computer becomes hot or performance deteriorates over a session, check component temperatures and inspect fans and vents for dust. Clean dusty vents and fans as appropriate; a compressed air duster is relevant to that maintenance task, not a general-purpose FPS upgrade. Riot identifies overheating and cleaning as troubleshooting considerations in its performance troubleshooting guidance.

When settings and basic checks are not enough
If the problem remains after testing graphics options, confirming requirements, updating drivers, and checking for heat, use Riot Support’s diagnostic route. Avoid risky registry or BIOS edits and third-party “FPS booster” tools: the cited Riot guidance does not recommend them as a fix. Before spending on hardware, identify a specific component that falls short of the current requirements or is otherwise shown to be the bottleneck; the published requirements alone do not establish that any particular upgrade is necessary.
