League of Legends’ 2025 Season 2 brought two different changes: it replaced Season 1’s Voracious and Ruinous Atakhan with one form, Thornbound Atakhan, and introduced Brawl, a limited-time 5v5 mode. Atakhan was later removed from Summoner’s Rift in Patch 26.1, so these are changes from different points in the game’s timeline—not a description of the current live map.
What happened to Voracious Atakhan?
Season 1 had two Atakhan forms, Voracious and Ruinous. In its April 15, 2025 preview, Riot said Season 2 would consolidate them into a single new form, Thornbound. Riot Auberaun wrote, “We heard your feedback around Voracious Atakhan, and we agree.” Riot said balancing Voracious Atakhan’s rewards had been difficult and that it wanted a more reasonable distribution of Atakhan forms in professional play. Riot’s Season 2 gameplay preview tied the new form to the Spirit Blossom story, in which LeBlanc and the Black Rose recaptured Atakhan.
How Thornbound Atakhan worked in Season 2
Patch 25.09, released April 29, 2025, introduced Thornbound Atakhan on the Spirit Blossom Rift in place of both earlier forms. The Season 2 map changed visually for the event, but Riot said its terrain did not change. Atakhan still spawned on the side of the map with more PvP action, and Bloody Roses appeared near kills and his pit.
Defeating Thornbound Atakhan gave the team an immediate Bloody Petal bonus, all remaining Bloody Roses purified into Spirit Petals, and Spiritual Purification for the rest of the game. Each Spirit Petal granted 25% more XP and Adaptive Force than a Bloody Petal. Spiritual Purification also blessed the area around a target when the empowered team scored a takedown: nearby enemies were slowed and damaged, and the team received a Spirit Petal. These are the shipped rules described in Riot’s Patch 25.09 notes.

What Brawl changed about a 5v5 match
Brawl arrived with Patch 25.10 on May 13, 2025. It put two teams of five in a compact, single-lane arena and replaced the usual focus on taking towers and major objectives with a shared-health race. Each team started with 250 health; the first to bring the opposing team’s total to zero won.
- A champion takedown dealt 5 damage to the opposing team’s shared health.
- A minion takedown dealt 1 damage while the opposing team was not at low health.
- Each friendly minion pushed into the opposing Bandle portal dealt 1 damage.
Side camps offered powerful buffs and gold, creating a trade-off: contest the camp or focus on stopping the enemy’s minion push. Riot estimated a match would take about 10 minutes. Riot Sakaar’s Patch 25.10 notes described the pitch this way: “Think ARAM, but you get to pick your favorite champ, don’t have to worry about things like objectives or towers, and you can focus on the pure team death match vibes.”

The launch notes originally scheduled Brawl to remain available until Patch 25.13 went live on June 24, 2025. That was the announced initial window, not the final end date: Riot later extended the mode.

Thornbound was a Season 2 version of Atakhan, not a permanent replacement. In Patch 26.1, Riot removed Atakhan, Blood Roses, and Feats of Strength. Riot said the features added complexity to Summoner’s Rift without enough value to justify keeping them, and that player feedback had been negative. It also singled out Atakhan’s effect on the match: “Atakhan in particular contributed to an extremely objective-focused game that tended to narrow the possibilities of what a game of Summoner’s Rift can be.”
