Ruined King offers the better solo story. It is a purpose-built, single-player, turn-based RPG with a finite campaign, while League of Legends is principally a competitive match game in which two teams of five destroy an opposing Nexus. League can provide lore and occasional story events, but entering solo queue does not turn it into a standalone narrative adventure.
The distinction matters if you want a beginning, middle and end that you can experience alone. Ruined King follows six established champions through Bilgewater and the Shadow Isles, with exploration, conversations, puzzles and side quests around its main plot. League is the better fit when competitive play comes first and story is something you explore around that core.

Can I play League of Legends for the story by myself?
You can read League lore and encounter occasional narrative content alone, but the main game is not a solo story campaign. Riot’s how-to-play guide describes the principal format as two teams of five competing to destroy the other team’s Nexus.
What solo queue actually gives you
Solo queue means you enter a match without bringing a full premade group. It does not remove teammates, opponents, timers, objectives or the competitive win condition. Your champion’s actions are driven by real-time strategy, coordination and combat against another team, not by moving through authored chapters at your own pace.

A match can create memorable character moments, but its immediate objective remains victory on the map. The game does not provide a conventional sequence of story missions in which one champion’s personal arc advances from chapter to chapter after every match.
Where League has delivered story content
League has supported lore through biographies, cinematics, universe material and client-based events. Riot’s retrospective on the 2021 Rise of the Sentinels event records that story progress required players to play matches. The developers also acknowledged limitations in presenting a visual-novel-style story inside the client, writing: “Our takeaway is that lore should be accessible, especially canon Runeterra lore.” Read that as a documented example of how one event worked, not as a claim that every League story in 2026 uses the same delivery system. The retrospective is available at Riot’s developer post.

That makes League viable for a reader who wants a broad setting and is happy to obtain story through a mixture of matches and supplementary material. It is a poor match for someone who wants to sit down alone and follow a guaranteed narrative route without competitive interruptions.
Is Ruined King a single-player League game?
It is a standalone single-player RPG set in the League universe, not a solo version of Summoner’s Rift. Riot describes it as a complete experience with a beginning, middle and end, and the game has no multiplayer mode.
A campaign designed around narrative progression
Ruined King combines exploration, non-player-character conversations, puzzles, side quests and discoverable lore with a central plot. Those systems are arranged to support a directed adventure: you travel through locations, meet characters, resolve encounters and advance the campaign rather than repeatedly resetting to a competitive match state.
There is still room to choose routes, investigate optional content and configure your party, but the structure is recognizably that of a traditional story-driven RPG. The official gameplay deep dive explains the mix of exploration and turn-based combat at Riot’s Ruined King gameplay overview.

The campaign’s playable roster consists of Miss Fortune, Illaoi, Braum, Pyke, Yasuo and Ahri. You build an active party of three from those six, which gives party composition a direct role in how you approach battles and character interactions. The six-champion roster and three-member party are specified in Riot Forge’s publisher FAQ, reproduced in the Steam announcement.
This is a different kind of agency from League. In League, you normally select one champion for a match and your team’s draft, opponents and objectives shape the experience. In Ruined King, you repeatedly work with a small ensemble whose relationships and individual arcs belong to the same campaign.

What part of Runeterra does Ruined King cover?
Ruined King focuses on Bilgewater and the Shadow Isles after the events of Burning Tides. It is a specific regional story, not a tour through every nation, champion and historical era in Runeterra.
Bilgewater, the Shadow Isles and the post-Burning Tides setting
That regional focus gives the game a coherent cast and conflict. Miss Fortune, Illaoi, Pyke and the other playable champions meet within a story shaped by Bilgewater’s maritime culture and the Shadow Isles’ supernatural threat. The narrower setting is an advantage for a solo campaign because locations, factions and character motivations can be developed in relation to one another instead of being sampled briefly across the entire universe.

Riot has said that the core narratives of its Forge games are canon, while acknowledging that individual games can express those stories in medium-specific ways. Riot also recognized that versions of the related Sentinels story across products produced inconsistencies. Therefore, treat Ruined King as an important canon story in the wider Runeterra timeline, but do not assume that every scene or presentation has an identical counterpart in League or another product. Riot’s explanation of Forge’s relationship to canon appears in this Riot Forge developer article.
Is there a companion story outside the game?
Riot’s novel Ruination by Anthony Reynolds is a separate story, not a game disc and not a prerequisite for understanding Ruined King. Riot identifies hardcover, ebook and audio editions and places the novel’s events roughly 1,000 years before the game, following earlier history involving Kalista, Viego and Isolde. Details are on Riot’s Ruination page.
How do the two games’ mechanics affect their stories?
The mechanics determine whether story is the primary activity or a layer around another activity. League’s real-time team contest repeatedly interrupts any linear narrative flow; Ruined King uses RPG systems to move the narrative forward.
| Story consideration | League of Legends | Ruined King |
|---|---|---|
| Core activity | Real-time matches between two teams of five | Exploration, dialogue, puzzles, quests and turn-based battles |
| Player role | One champion in a team whose outcome depends on allies and opponents | Party leader arranging three champions from a six-character roster |
| Progression shape | Match-by-match; the competitive result is separate from a finite campaign plot | Quest and chapter progression toward a defined ending |
| Story access | Supplementary lore and events can be attached to client or match participation | Story content is integrated into the single-player campaign |
What “Lane Initiative” means in Ruined King
Ruined King uses a turn-based system called Lane Initiative. You place actions along an initiative timeline, deciding how abilities, hazards and quicker or slower moves interact. This “lane” controls turn timing inside an RPG battle.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →It is not one of the lanes on Summoner’s Rift. League’s top, middle and bottom lanes describe positions and routes on a competitive map, whereas Lane Initiative describes when a character’s action resolves. Confusing the two can make the combat system sound more like League than it actually is.
Why the difference matters for a solo reader
League asks you to learn a competitive ruleset, cooperate with four teammates and react to five opponents in real time. Even when you are curious about a champion’s lore, the match’s tactical demands are the immediate priority.

Ruined King lets you pause between encounters, inspect a quest, speak with an NPC or adjust your party before continuing. Its battles still require decisions, but those decisions are made in a controllable, story-oriented context rather than under a live team clock.
How much control do you have over the characters?
League gives you moment-to-moment control over one champion selected for a match; Ruined King gives you continuing control over a small party whose members remain part of the same narrative.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesLeague’s champion-by-champion perspective
League’s large roster is a strength for variety. You can choose different champions, learn their abilities and encounter a broad world through descriptions and external lore. However, each match resets the immediate situation, and the champion you select is only one member of a temporary team. The format is excellent for repeated competitive play, but it does not guarantee a personal arc for every champion you play.
Ruined King’s ensemble perspective
The six playable champions are selected for this particular adventure. Choosing three for active duty affects combat options, while the campaign supplies a shared context in which their personalities and histories meet. Optional quests and conversations can add texture without requiring you to leave the game for a separate lore source.
That does not mean every player receives exactly the same sequence of scenes or that party selection changes the entire plot. It means the game’s agency is built around managing a narrative party, not around selecting a temporary avatar for an isolated match.
Do I need to play League before Ruined King?
No. Riot presented Ruined King as an invitation to both new players and established lore fans. Prior knowledge can help you recognize champions and references, but it is not presented as a prerequisite for following the campaign.
What newcomers should expect
You will meet familiar League champions in a different genre and learn their roles through the RPG’s own dialogue, exploration and combat systems. If you know nothing about Runeterra, you may miss some historical context, but the game’s regional focus gives you a manageable starting point rather than requiring encyclopedic knowledge.
What League players gain from prior knowledge
Existing players may recognize Bilgewater factions, champion abilities and the significance of the Shadow Isles more quickly. That recognition is a bonus, not a gate: the campaign remains a self-contained story with its own progression.

How long is Ruined King, and what are the purchase considerations?
Riot Forge’s 2021 publisher FAQ estimated an average playthrough at approximately 20–30 hours. That is a publisher estimate, not an independently measured completion time or a guarantee for every play style. The same FAQ listed Story, Normal, Veteran and Heroic difficulty options.
Release and platform information
Steam records a November 16, 2021 release for Ruined King: A League of Legends Story, developed by Airship Syndicate and published by Riot Forge; its current listing identifies a single-player PC version at the Steam product page. The 2021 FAQ also named Switch, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, GOG and Epic Games Store. A launch-era platform list does not confirm present-day console stock, so check the store listing for your region before buying.

Free entry versus a purchased campaign
League of Legends has a free-to-play entry point. Ruined King is sold as a separate game, but current regional prices were not established here; launch-era dollar figures from the old FAQ should not be treated as November 2026 prices. Verify the live price, edition and platform directly at the storefront you intend to use.
Optional physical editions
The 2021 FAQ described a Ruined King Collector’s Edition with an art book, a Joe Madureira sketch, a 12-inch vinyl soundtrack, a cloth map, a notebook and pen, and a mug. That description does not establish current inventory, a current price or standalone availability for those items, so treat it as an availability-sensitive collector search rather than a guaranteed purchase option.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which game should you choose for a solo story?
Use the following decision points rather than treating the two games as interchangeable versions of the same experience.
Choose Ruined King if you want:
- A campaign with a defined beginning, middle and end.
- Story content that is available inside a single-player game rather than attached to competitive matches.
- Bilgewater and Shadow Isles lore centered on six playable champions.
- Exploration, NPC conversations, puzzles and side quests alongside turn-based combat.
- Control over a three-member party and the pace at which you investigate the world.
Choose League of Legends if you want:
- Competitive real-time matches and the challenge of coordinating with teammates.
- A very broad champion roster and a universe explored through multiple kinds of lore material.
- A free-to-play entry point whose main appeal is replayable multiplayer competition.
- Story fragments and events that you are willing to encounter alongside, rather than instead of, the match structure.
Choose both if you want context and contrast
Playing League first can make champion identities and Runeterra references more familiar, while Ruined King supplies the concentrated solo narrative that League’s principal mode does not. You do not need to complete one before starting the other, and the two games ask for different kinds of attention.

How were these two games compared?
The recommendation uses the factors that most directly answer a solo-story question:
- Story delivery: whether narrative is the main activity or a supplementary layer around matches.
- Campaign structure: whether the game offers a finite progression and ending.
- Player agency: whether you control a continuing party or one champion in a temporary team.
- Access to lore: whether story is integrated into the game or tied to events and external material.
- Practical commitment: the publisher’s stated playtime estimate, difficulty choices, release information and current platform caveats.
No independently measured comparison establishes that one title has objectively superior prose, dialogue or worldbuilding. “Better solo story” here means the format that more reliably delivers a complete narrative to one player: that is Ruined King.

FAQ
Is Ruined King’s story the same as the Sentinels of Light story?
No. The games and events occupy the connected Runeterra setting, but Riot has acknowledged that versions of related stories across products can contain inconsistencies. Treat each product’s presentation as its own expression of the wider canon rather than expecting scene-for-scene duplication.
Can I experience Ruined King without buying a League account or cosmetics?
Yes. It is a separately sold single-player game, so its campaign is not dependent on League’s account progression or cosmetic purchases. You only need the platform version you choose and its current storefront requirements.
Does Ruined King let me use all six champions at once?
No. The roster contains six playable champions, but three are active in your party at a time. The remaining characters can still be part of the campaign even when they are not in the active combat lineup.
Is the 20–30-hour figure a guaranteed completion time?
No. It is Riot Forge’s approximate 2021 estimate for an average playthrough. Optional quests, exploration, difficulty selection and the amount of time spent with dialogue can make an individual run shorter or longer.
