Left 4 Dead 2 administration is primarily console- and RCON-based. Run status first, then use the returned userid or Steam ID for moderation; use changelevel for a live map rotation and map only when you accept a session reset. The standard limits are four players in co-op and eight in versus. Raising those limits requires a server-side plugin such as l4dtoolz together with a bot or spawn manager. SourceMod adds an admin menu, logging, immunity rules and protected-cvar controls, but it is an additional installation rather than a vanilla command layer.
What are the essential Left 4 Dead 2 server commands?
For most administrators, the practical sequence is: open the developer console, inspect the server with status, moderate by userid or Steam ID, and use changelevel when rotating maps. RCON lets you perform the same work remotely on a dedicated server.

Names can be ambiguous, especially when players use similar aliases. For moderation, the userid or Steam ID from status is the safer identifier.
How do I open the console and connect with RCON?
Enable Allow Developer Console at Options → Keyboard/Mouse, then press the tilde key (~). A local host can run commands there. A dedicated server administrator can use RCON after setting a password in the server configuration.

rcon_password "your_strong_password"toleft4dead2/cfg/server.cfg. - From the client console, set the destination with
rcon_address <ip>:27015. - Authenticate with
rcon_password <password>. - Test the connection with
rcon status. The response should contain the server’s player and map information.
Use a long, unique RCON password and do not paste it into public chat or screenshots. If RCON returns no server response, verify the address, query port and that the server has finished loading its configuration.

How do I identify, kick and ban players?
Start every moderation action with status. Its output provides the userid needed by kickid and the Steam ID needed by banid, as well as useful context such as ping, current map and whether the server is reserved for a lobby.
Kick a player
kick <name>removes a player by name. Quote a name if spaces or punctuation make matching unclear.kickid <userid> [reason]targets the numeric userid fromstatusand can include a reason.
A kick is temporary: the player may reconnect unless you also apply a ban or access restriction.
Ban by Steam ID
banid <minutes> <SteamID>creates a Steam-ID ban.banid <minutes> <SteamID> kickbans and immediately kicks the matching player.- Use
0for minutes when you need a permanent ban. Valve Steam Support explicitly defines zero minutes as permanent. removeid <SteamID>removes a Steam-ID ban.
Timed bans are not reliably persistent across a process restart according to the MantaScope command reference. Use writeid for the permanent Steam-ID ban list and writeip for the permanent IP list after making changes you need retained. IP controls are addip <minutes> <IP> and removeip <IP>; an IP ban can affect other users behind the same address, so a Steam-ID ban is usually more precise.
How do I change the map or game mode without disrupting players?
Use changelevel for a live rotation. Use map when you intentionally want a hard reset, because it can disconnect clients and rebuild the session.

Find an installed map
Run maps * to list installed maps, or maps <partial> to filter the list. Copy the map name exactly as the server reports it.
Rotate in place
Run changelevel <map>, for example changelevel c2m1_highway. Connected clients normally remain attached during this transition, although a client with a failed download or incompatible add-on may still be removed.
Hard-load a map
Run map <map> [mode] when you need to rebuild the session or specify a mode at load time. Warn players first: this form can disconnect everyone.
Select the mode correctly
mp_gamemode selects the active mode, including coop, realism, survival, versus, teamversus, scavenge, teamscavenge and installed mutations. sv_gametypes controls which modes are available to matchmaking; setting mp_gamemode alone does not make a mode selectable through matchmaking unless that mode is included in sv_gametypes.
z_difficulty <Easy|Normal|Hard|Impossible> affects co-op, realism and survival. Versus uses Normal difficulty regardless of this setting.

How do lobby, direct-connect and password commands work?
Lobby matchmaking is convenient for discoverability, while direct IP access gives an administrator tighter control over who can enter. The two paths use different settings.
Route a lobby to a particular server
Set sv_search_key <key> to a shared search key. Give the same key to the lobby workflow that should locate the server. This is useful when several servers are available and you need a specific destination.
Allow direct IP connections
Set sv_allow_lobby_connect_only 0. With lobby-only access enabled, a direct connect command can be refused even when the address and port are correct.

For a client joining a passworded server, use setinfo pw <password> ; connect <IP>:27015. The ordinary password command is reported as broken in Left 4 Dead 2 by the 2hours.gg command reference, so the setinfo pw form is the practical workaround.
Notify the Steam master servers
Run heartbeat to manually send a server notification when you need to refresh its presence in the master-server listing.

How do I use sv_cheats and Director commands safely?
sv_cheats 1 enables cheat-flagged commands for the entire server, not just the administrator. Reserve it for private testing or controlled events. A lobby reservation can revert sv_cheats to 0; unreserve the server or use direct-connect-only access before depending on cheat commands.

Because these settings affect every connected client, announce the change and return to normal operation with sv_cheats 0 when testing is complete. If a command suddenly reports that cheats are disabled, check reservation state first rather than repeatedly issuing the command.
What does SourceMod add to vanilla administration?
Vanilla commands work from the console or RCON. SourceMod adds a permission-aware administration layer with menus, logging and immunity handling, plus a way to change protected cvars.
!adminorsmopens the SourceMod admin menu in chat or console contexts where it is enabled.sm_kick <target> [reason]performs a logged, immunity-aware kick.sm_ban <target> <minutes> [reason]applies a SourceMod ban.sm_cvar <cvar> <value>sets a protected cvar through SourceMod permissions.
SourceMod and MetaMod require installation and configuration on the dedicated server. They are useful when several moderators need consistent permissions or when you want a menu instead of raw command entry. They do not remove the need to understand vanilla behavior, especially map resets, lobby reservations and ban persistence.

Not with an ordinary vanilla cvar. The current documented caps are four co-op players and eight versus players, and MantaScope states that no supported vanilla cvar raises those limits.

Larger games commonly combine l4dtoolz with a bot or spawn-management plugin. MultiSlots installations expose commands such as:

Plugin behavior is version- and configuration-sensitive. More slots also require suitable bot handling, spawn logic and map support; simply changing a number without those components can leave players unable to join or without a valid survivor spawn. One hosted Share-the-IP tier advertises capacity up to 20 players, but that is a provider-specific offering rather than a vanilla-game limit.
What should I check when a command does not work?
- The console is unavailable: enable Allow Developer Console under Options → Keyboard/Mouse, then press
~. - RCON is silent: confirm
rcon_address, the server port, the configuredrcon_passwordand that the server has loadedserver.cfg. - A userid command targets nobody: run
statusagain. Userids can change after reconnects. - A Steam-ID ban has no effect: copy the Steam ID exactly from
status, then use thekicksuffix if the player is still connected. - A timed ban disappears after restart: use a permanent ban with
banid 0when appropriate and write the permanent list withwriteid. - Players disconnect during a rotation: use
changelevelinstead ofmapfor routine live changes. - Cheats keep turning off: inspect lobby reservation, unreserve the server or switch to direct-connect-only access, then set
sv_cheats 1again. - A mode is missing from matchmaking: add it to
sv_gametypes;mp_gamemodeonly selects the active mode. - Extra players cannot join: verify that l4dtoolz, the slot plugin and its bot/spawn dependencies are loaded and configured together.
Which administration method should I choose?

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I see who is connected before I change the map?
Yes. Run status immediately before the change and note the player list, map and reservation state. This also gives you a record of userids and Steam IDs if a reconnect or moderation issue follows.
Do I need to restart the server after editing server.cfg?
A configuration change is only useful after the server has loaded it. If the running instance does not reflect a new RCON or access setting, reload the configuration through your normal server-management method or restart the process during a maintenance window.
Why does a versus server ignore my z_difficulty setting?
The command affects co-op, realism and survival. Versus remains Normal by design, so changing z_difficulty is not a way to alter versus difficulty.
What is the safest way to test a new plugin?
Use a private, direct-connect server with a backup of the configuration and plugin files. Test map changes, bot filling, admin permissions and a clean restart separately before allowing a public lobby to reserve the server.
