Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteLegacy of Kain: Ascendance has the ingredients of an intriguing return to Nosgoth: a prequel to Soul Reaver, multiple playable perspectives, and Simon Templeman back as Kain. But the available critical case is bleak. PC Gamer reviewer Fraser Brown gave it 30, faulting its story, level design, and enemy behavior while singling out Templeman’s performance as a bright spot. That makes it hard to recommend without reservations.
What kind of game is Ascendance?
Crystal Dynamics describes Legacy of Kain: Ascendance as a fast-paced 2D action-platformer and a prequel to Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver. It is not presented as a direct continuation of Soul Reaver. The publisher says the game follows Kain, Raziel before and after his fall, and Elaleth, combining pixel-art gameplay with selected 3D sequences inspired by the original PlayStation era and anime-influenced cinematics. Crystal Dynamics’ game page outlines that premise and format.

The official pitch emphasizes chaining melee attacks, evasive dashes, and supernatural abilities. In an Xbox Wire feature, the developers’ design is described as linking traversal and combat through a stamina-like resource. Those are descriptions of intended mechanics, not independent evidence that the action is satisfying in practice.
Why the review is disappointing
PC Gamer’s Fraser Brown gave Ascendance a score of 30. His review criticizes three parts central to the experience: the story, the level design, and the enemies. Brown calls the level design uninspired, describes enemy behavior as sometimes strange or bugged, and judges the story weak. Those are his critical assessments, not measured findings or a consensus across reviewers.
#1 Best Overall
- An atmospheric original score by Celldweller, capturing the dark, cinematic world of Legacy of Kain: Ascendance.
The contrast is particularly frustrating for a franchise built around its characters and narrative. Brown says the dialogue is fine and praises Simon Templeman’s performance as Kain, but notes that Kain is barely in the game. A strong returning voice performance cannot do much to offset a story Brown finds weak, especially when the game’s other core elements draw criticism too.
Brown’s verdict is blunt: “We deserve better than Legacy of Kain: Ascendance.” Read the full PC Gamer review for his complete argument.
Is Ascendance canon?
Crystal Dynamics says yes. In its March 2, 2026 FAQ, the publisher describes Ascendance as an official extension of the Legacy of Kain story within the franchise’s broader canon. That establishes the publisher’s position; it does not resolve how every longtime fan will judge the story’s fit with earlier games.
How it differs from older Legacy of Kain games
The clearest difference established by the available descriptions is format: Ascendance shifts the series to 2D action-platforming, with selected retro-inspired 3D sequences. It also uses several character perspectives, including Raziel before and after his fall. That is enough to distinguish its approach, but not enough to make a detailed comparison of its level design, combat depth, or storytelling against every earlier entry.

Release date and platforms
Crystal Dynamics lists March 31, 2026 as the release date. Its game page names PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store; the publisher’s FAQ also names GOG. Store availability can vary by region. The FAQ said physical editions were planned but not finalized as of March 2, 2026, so that statement does not confirm that a physical edition is currently available.

Based on the cited review, approach it cautiously. The format, canon status, and returning cast may interest series fans, but PC Gamer’s low score is grounded in substantial objections to the story, levels, and enemy encounters—not merely a change in genre. Brown’s praise for Templeman is a genuine positive, though Kain’s limited presence restricts how much that strength can carry the experience. The evidence here supports a critical review, not a claim about wider player sentiment or a comprehensive ranking of the series.
