Upgrade the witch first, then build one elemental Friend team around her skills. Spend shards on the highest-tier Friends you actually own in that element, use Skill Damage bonuses when they compete with Bonus Gold, and delay expensive gear or side-system investments until your current team stops clearing stages. Redeem the free codes and event rewards before buying Soul Stones. This approach prevents the most expensive mistakes: starring a weak or off-element Friend, spending Diamonds while tickets sit unused, and enhancing equipment that will immediately be replaced.
What counts as a “hero” in Legend of Witch?
Legend of Witch: Idle RPG has one playable witch. The gacha companions commonly called heroes are named Friends in the game. Your upgrade decisions therefore split into two tracks:

- The witch: Growth-menu wand stats, level-up Stat Points, skills, equipment and Stage Collection bonuses determine the account’s basic damage and survivability.
- Friends: One- to five-star companions provide elemental and statistical bonuses. Their shards are used for starring and MAX Promotion.
Dreamplay’s store description lists equipment, skills, attributes, companions and titles as separate systems, while also joking that “The developer is worried because we give away too much!” The breadth is real, but your scarce materials should stay concentrated on the witch and one deployed elemental group.
Which upgrades should I do first?
Use this order whenever a new account reaches a progression wall. It keeps permanent power ahead of temporary or replaceable purchases.

- Strengthen the witch in Growth. Spend Gold and level-up Stat Points on the offensive wand stats that help you clear the current stage. If the witch dies before the timer, move the next points into defensive stats instead. An indexed beginner guide describes Gold in Growth as the wand-stat currency and Diamonds as the currency needed for summons.
- Equip the best current gear. Use Auto Equip for the strongest available pieces, then compare every new drop with what is already enhanced. Enhance only when the replacement is not imminent or the extra power clears a meaningful wall.
- Upgrade skills for the problem in front of you. Wave-clear skills matter on ordinary stages; boss damage, cooldown reduction or survival skills matter on a boss wall. Do not level every skill evenly just because materials are available.
- Choose one Friend element. Match Friends to the witch’s skill elements before considering raw star count. Deploy the highest-tier matching units you own and concentrate shards and Friend equipment on them.
- Add supporting systems that serve that same build. Stage Collection stats, Laboratory research, Friend equipment, Dispatch and event-shop materials are worthwhile when they improve the deployed witch-and-Friends setup.
- Only then fund late systems. Companion Transcendence, extra Titles, Dragon content, Monster Hunter research and Arena upgrades should come after your PvE team is stable.
CityParkGames’ practical rule is to “Prioritize upgrades that improve your current progression.” Its companion warning is equally important: “Avoid investing heavily in equipment that you expect to replace immediately unless the upgrade provides a necessary short-term advantage.”
How do I choose which Friends to upgrade?
Element match beats a complete collection. Pocket Gamer’s Cristina Mesesan explains: “The element is the deciding factor for the Friends. You want to deploy the ones that match your witch’s skill elements.” There are currently no universal-element Friends, so a high-star unit in the wrong element can contribute less to your build than a lower-star match.

For a full Fire build, for example, Fire Friends increase Fire damage; the same principle applies to Wind, Water and Lightning. Mesesan writes: “For instance, if you want to go for a full Fire build, you will need to deploy Fire Friends because they will boost the Fire DMG. The same applies for each element, since at the moment, we don’t have any universal element Friends.”

Pocket Gamer labels Aura “mandatory” for Lightning and says the attribute “can be a game-changer” when the skills are upgraded. That does not mean you should abandon a well-developed Fire or Wind account: switch only when you can field a coherent Lightning core rather than one isolated Lightning Friend.

The following is Pocket Gamer’s 28 October 2026 ranking. It ranks the named Friends by the bonuses they provide, not by animation or a separate damage test. Echor appears in both S+ and S in the published table; that duplication is retained rather than silently corrected.

Mesesan notes that five-star units are difficult to acquire and usually arrive later. “Either way, there are alternatives, so when picking them for your team, just pick the available highest-tier you own.” Do not hold your account back waiting for a perfect five-star if a strong matching lower-tier Friend is already improving your current stages.
When is Skill Damage better than Bonus Gold?
For combat progression, Skill Damage generally wins a close choice over Bonus Gold. In Fire, Mesesan says: “Even though Leonta is a 3-star, she gives the same bonus as Draco (Bonus Gold), so you’d much rather have the Skill Damage bonus granted by Bella.” On Wind, Willow can similarly trade some Wind ATK for Skill Damage. Bonus Gold is useful for farming, but it should not displace a combat bonus when a stage wall is the immediate problem.
How do Friends shards and promotion work?
Use shards to star up and eventually MAX Promote Friends, but do not plan around an invented universal shard ladder. The official patch trail confirms the systems without publishing their costs: version 0.95 added a four-star shard-probability display and a Remaining Shard Display when a Friend reaches MAX Promotion; version 1.17 added Companion Transcendence. Open the Friend’s promotion screen and follow its live remaining-shard number for that unit.

- Open the Friends or companion screen and filter by the element your witch uses.
- Pick one core group, beginning with the highest-tier matching Friends you own.
- Spend duplicate shards on those deployed units first. Keep off-element and C-tier shards unspent if a matching S or S+ option may replace them.
- Check the Remaining Shard Display before committing a large batch, especially near MAX Promotion.
- After MAX Promotion, evaluate Companion Transcendence only for the same core; do not start transcending a bench unit while your main team lacks basic stars or equipment.
The clearest waste cases are starring a C-tier Friend, starring an S-tier Friend whose element does not match your witch, or feeding shards into Bonus Gold when a same-element Skill Damage option is available. Those choices consume the scarce materials that five-star Friends require later.
Should I spend Diamonds on summons?
Spend Diamonds deliberately, not whenever the summon button is available. Use equipment tickets first, then summon toward the element and upgrade plan you can actually support. Save a reserve for a rate-up or event banner if the game offers one; no permanent banner percentage table is published in the available materials.
- Equipment Draw Tickets: the Basic summon consumes one ticket per summon, so do not pay Diamonds while tickets are unused.
- Friend summons: use them when the resulting shards can improve your chosen elemental core, not to collect random off-element units.
- Skill summons: spend when a skill upgrade solves your current wave or boss wall.
- Shop packages: treat them as optional purchases. An indexed beginner guide describes the shop as unsuitable for free-to-play players, and CityParkGames says you do not need every package to progress.
CityParkGames’ broader warning is: “Avoid spending premium currency impulsively.” A summon that does not improve your live build is usually less valuable than the tickets, event exchange materials or future banner access it replaces.
How should I upgrade gear and skills without wasting materials?
Gear is a replaceable power layer, so compare before enhancing. The equipment summon level cap rose from LV20 to LV30 in version 1.05 (7 August 2026), making tickets and Diamonds a long-term sink rather than a reason to max every early item.
- Collect idle rewards, stage drops and dungeon rewards before opening paid packs.
- Use Auto Equip to establish a baseline, then inspect the exact stats on a new drop.
- Enhance the current piece only if the gain helps clear the next stage, dungeon floor or boss.
- When a stronger drop arrives, move forward rather than continuing to pour materials into the old piece.
- Once the witch’s gear is stable, equip and enhance Friend gear on the deployed elemental team—not on bench Friends.
Skills deserve the same focus. Upgrade wave-clear skills for ordinary progression and boss-oriented skills for a boss wall; Stage Collection bonuses such as Bonus Gold, Bonus EXP, Skill CDR and Skill Damage should support that same priority. Version 1.11 raised Skill Research values and added Gold Enhancement stats, while version 1.14 raised the Level Enhancement stat cap, so older spending plans may not match the current ceilings.
Which resources are easiest to waste?

Which Legend of Witch codes should I redeem first?
Redeem every active code before buying Soul Stones or Diamonds. Pocket Gamer listed these codes as active on 28 October 2026; monthly and weekly strings can expire after their respective windows, so verify the in-game announcement before relying on them.

How to redeem a coupon
- Open the right-side menu.
- Choose Game Settings.
- Enter the string in the Coupon textbox.
- Press Coupon, then collect the reward from the game’s mailbox or reward prompt.
Mesesan says the welcome code is especially valuable because it supplies two of each key bundle along with Diamonds and draw tickets. Do not confuse these codes with “VIP888” and similar strings: those belong to the different game Legend of Witches (plural) and will not work here. New unique codes are uncommon; check in-game announcements for additions.
Are Soul Stones and paid packs worth buying?
They are optional accelerators, not a requirement for the upgrade order. Claim codes, idle rewards, daily activities, dungeons and event exchanges first, then compare any purchase with your budget and the exact bottleneck it solves. A Google Play reviewer described hitting a paywall feeling after roughly two hours; that is one player’s anecdote, not a guaranteed progression schedule.

Unlock them as they become available, but spend deeply only after your witch and elemental Friends are clearing PvE content reliably. These systems draw from the same limited pile of currency and materials.

What should my daily no-waste routine look like?
- Collect offline or idle rewards.
- Claim daily missions, login rewards and any announcement mail.
- Redeem newly posted codes and check code expiry windows.
- Inspect equipment, compare new drops and enhance only useful pieces.
- Run dungeons using keys on floors your combat power can clear.
- Complete event tasks and spend event currency before the exchange closes.
- Push stages after a meaningful power increase, then reassess the next wall.
- Check Friend, Dispatch, Laboratory and Stage Collection rewards.
- Leave Arena and cosmetic purchases until the core PvE team is funded.
What mistakes make players regret an upgrade?
- Building every element at once: match Friends to one witch element and finish a functional core first.
- Waiting indefinitely for five stars: use the highest-tier matching Friend you own now; five-stars are difficult and generally arrive later.
- Starring C-tier or off-element units: keep those shards for a replacement unless the unit is your only viable match.
- Choosing Bonus Gold during a combat wall: Skill Damage usually has the better immediate progression value in the Fire and Wind examples above.
- Spending Diamonds while tickets remain: consume Equipment Draw Tickets on Basic summons first.
- Enhancing disposable gear: compare drops and invest in pieces that will survive the next difficulty spike.
- Skipping free keys: the welcome and open1m codes include Basic and Expanded Zone Entry Ticket Bundles.
- Confusing the two similarly named games: Legend of Witch is singular; codes for Legend of Witches do not apply.
How often should I revisit this plan?
Recheck the Friend rankings, codes, event shops and version notes whenever a patch lands. The public App Store trail moved from version 0.65 on 25 March 2026 to 0.85 on 22 May and 1.17 on 14 October, with systems such as Friend equipment, Arena and Companion Transcendence arriving during that cadence. A team that is efficient today can change when a new Friend, cap increase or event exchange is introduced.

Can I change my main element later without starting over?
Yes, but switching is cheapest before you have heavily starred and equipped a team. Keep unspent shards and enhancement materials until the replacement element has enough matching Friends to function, then move future spending rather than trying to maintain two complete rosters.
Where can I see how many shards a Friend still needs?
Open that Friend’s promotion screen and use the Remaining Shard Display added with the Friend-system updates. The game does not provide a universal published shard ladder, so the value shown for the specific unit is the reliable number.

No. Transcendence is a later companion system added in version 1.17, while shards and MAX Promotion remain the earlier progression path. Finish the stars and basic equipment of your deployed core before directing scarce materials into Transcendence.
Is Lightning always the correct choice for a new account?
Not automatically. Lightning is currently rated strongest when Aura, the other recommended units and upgraded skills are available, but a complete Fire or Wind team will outperform a single Lightning Friend surrounded by mismatched units.
