Lenovo Legion 5 Pro 16 Review: A Bright 165Hz Gaming Laptop That Still Deserves a Look in 2026

The Lenovo Legion 5 Pro 16ACH6H remains a strong used gaming laptop because of its bright 16:10 165Hz display, effective cooling, upgradeable design, and high-power RTX 3070. But in 2026, battery condition, GPU configuration, charger, and price determine whether it is a smart buy.

Verdict: The Lenovo Legion 5 Pro 16ACH6H remains an appealing used gaming laptop in 2026 if you find the high-power RTX 3070 version at a substantial discount. Its unusually bright 16:10 165Hz display, effective cooling, upgradeable memory and storage, and strong plugged-in performance are still compelling. Its age, 5.4-pound chassis, mediocre webcam, poor battery-gaming behavior, and potentially worn battery make the exact condition and price more important than the Legion name.

Which Legion 5 Pro is this?

“Legion 5 Pro 16” describes a family of configurations, not one universal laptop. This review focuses on Notebookcheck’s Lenovo Legion 5 Pro 16ACH6H, type 82JQ001PGE, tested with the following hardware:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Component Test configuration
Processor AMD Ryzen 7 5800H, 8 cores and 16 threads, up to 4.4GHz
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Laptop GPU, 8GB GDDR6, up to 140W in the tested unit
Memory 32GB DDR4-3200, installed as two 16GB modules
Storage 1TB Western Digital NVMe SSD
Display 16-inch IPS, 2560×1600, 16:10, 165Hz
Battery 80Wh
Operating system Windows 10 Pro 64-bit during testing

Lenovo also sold 16ACH6H variants with RTX 3060 graphics and different processor, memory, and storage combinations. The broader 16ACH6 family included RTX 3050 and RTX 3050 Ti models. Those GPUs are not equivalent to the reviewed RTX 3070, so verify the machine’s exact graphics processor before buying. See Lenovo’s official 16ACH6H specifications and the family specification page.

The display is the Legion’s biggest advantage

The 16-inch panel is the reason to choose this laptop over many similarly aged gaming machines. It combines a sharp 2560×1600 resolution with a taller 16:10 aspect ratio, a fast 165Hz refresh rate, matte anti-glare coating, and Lenovo’s 500-nit specification.

#1 Best Overall
Lenovo Legion 5 Gen 10 Gaming Laptop: Ryzen 7 260, NVidia RTX 5060, 16GB DDR5 RAM, 512GB SSD, 15.3" WUXGA (1920x1200) 165Hz Display
  • AMD Ryzen 7 260 Processor (8C / 16T, 3.8 / 5.1GHz, 8MB L2 / 16MB L3)
  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 8GB GDDR7, Boost Clock 2497MHz, TGP 115W, 572 AI TOPS
  • 15.3" WUXGA (1920x1200) 16:10, 165Hz, 300-nits, 100% sRGB, Dolby Vision, Anti-glare, IPS Display, G-SYNC
  • 16GB (1x16GB) SO-DIMM DDR5-5600 RAM; 512GB M.2 2242 PCIe 4.0x4 NVMe SSD
  • Backlit Keyboard, Wi-Fi 6, 802.11ax 2x2, Bluetooth 5.2, Windows 11 Home

In practical use, 16:10 gives documents, web pages, timelines, code, and editing interfaces more vertical room than a conventional 16:9 screen. The 1600p resolution also looks noticeably sharper than 1080p at this size. For gaming, the extra pixels provide a cleaner image when the RTX 3070 can sustain the workload; for heavier games, 1920×1200, 1920×1080, an in-game resolution scaler, or DLSS is often the more sensible choice.

Notebookcheck measured an average brightness of 522.6cd/m2 and a maximum of about 555cd/m2 on its review unit. It measured approximately 99% sRGB coverage, accurate colors, and fast response times. That makes this a better display for general photo, video, and design work than the washed-out, low-gamut panels still common on gaming laptops from this era. The measured result applies to the tested unit; replacement screens and other configurations may differ.

What the display does not provide

The panel supports DisplayHDR 400, Dolby Vision, FreeSync, G-Sync, and DC dimming, but HDR should not be confused with OLED or high-end local-dimming HDR. Notebookcheck measured contrast at approximately 1,020:1, respectable for an IPS gaming panel but ordinary beside an OLED display. Blacks will not look truly deep in a dark room, and bright highlights will not have the impact of a modern premium HDR monitor.

Notebookcheck also observed visible backlight bleed under particular maximum-brightness and Dolby Vision conditions. IPS uniformity varies between units, which is especially important when buying used. Check dark screens at several brightness levels rather than assuming every Legion 5 Pro has identical panel quality.

Gaming performance: still strong when plugged in

The Ryzen 7 5800H remains a capable 8-core processor for gaming, office work, programming, multitasking, and moderate content creation. The RTX 3070 Laptop GPU was a high-end mobile GPU in 2021, and the tested machine’s up-to-140W implementation is much more meaningful than the RTX 3070 name alone. Laptop GPUs with lower power limits can perform substantially differently.

This combination is well suited to 1080p and 1920×1200 gaming and can handle 2560×1600 with sensible settings. Esports games are the natural match for the 165Hz panel. Demanding modern games may require DLSS or another upscaler, reduced ray tracing, and a mixture of high and medium settings. The GPU’s 8GB of VRAM is increasingly a constraint in newer, texture-heavy releases, particularly at native 1600p.

Test Result
3DMark Fire Strike 23,775 points
3DMark Time Spy 10,574 points
Cyberpunk 2077, highest settings About 45fps
Far Cry New Dawn, 2560×1440 Ultra About 82.7fps
Far Cry New Dawn, 1920×1080 Ultra with ray tracing About 119fps
The Witcher 3, 1920×1080 highest settings About 90fps plugged in

These are historical measurements from one system, not guaranteed results for every 16ACH6H. Drivers, BIOS revisions, game patches, memory configuration, temperatures, and Lenovo Vantage performance mode can all change performance. Notebookcheck’s complete test results and methodology provide the appropriate context.

Thermals are a strength, but noise is part of the bargain

The Legion 5 Pro uses a substantial cooling system and is designed to deliver performance from the wall. Notebookcheck recorded the RTX 3070 operating at approximately 75°C under its testing conditions and rated the cooling performance positively.

Lenovo’s modes matter:

  • Performance mode: intended for plugged-in gaming and the highest CPU and GPU power budgets.
  • Hybrid graphics: lets the integrated Radeon graphics handle lighter tasks and generally improves battery life.
  • Discrete graphics: prioritizes maximum GPU performance but consumes more power.

Good cooling does not mean silent operation. Fans become audible under sustained gaming loads, particularly in Performance mode. Hybrid mode may reduce performance slightly because the integrated-graphics path shares system memory, but it is the appropriate setting for mobile work. Battery operation is not a meaningful substitute for plugged-in gaming: in Notebookcheck’s Witcher 3 scenario, performance fell from roughly 90fps plugged in to about 50fps on battery.

Battery life is acceptable for light work, not gaming

The integrated 80Wh battery is large by ordinary laptop standards. Lenovo lists Rapid Charge Pro support, with charging to 50% in 30 minutes under the company’s stated conditions; details are available in Lenovo’s product specifications.

Notebookcheck measured:

  • 9 hours 8 minutes idle at minimum brightness with wireless disabled
  • 7 hours of Wi-Fi browsing in hybrid mode
  • 2 hours 48 minutes of Wi-Fi browsing in discrete-GPU mode
  • 44 minutes under maximum load at maximum brightness

The realistic takeaway is seven-hour-class light-use endurance when the system is configured correctly and in good condition. Gaming away from an outlet is a poor use case because performance is reduced and runtime is short. A used example can be dramatically worse after years of charge cycles, so do not use the original review’s battery figures as a promise about a second-hand machine.

Large, sturdy, and better suited to a desk than a backpack

The aluminum chassis feels robust and the restrained design avoids the most aggressive gaming styling. Lenovo lists dimensions of approximately 356 × 260.4–264.4 × 21.7–26.85mm and a weight of about 2.45kg (5.4lb), before adding the substantial power adapter. Those figures are documented in Lenovo’s PSREF.

That is reasonable for a powerful 16-inch gaming laptop but heavy for a student who carries it all day. The rear-mounted ports are excellent for a permanent desk setup, keeping cables away from the mouse area, but less convenient when repeatedly moving the laptop or using it in cramped spaces.

Keyboard, touchpad, webcam, and speakers

The keyboard includes a numeric keypad, which benefits spreadsheets and productivity but can affect key spacing and gaming ergonomics. Backlighting was configuration-dependent: some units used blue or white lighting, while others had four-zone RGB. Confirm the specific listing rather than assuming every 16ACH6H has RGB.

Notebookcheck found the touchpad’s placement and integrated buttons potentially intrusive during gaming. A mouse remains the better choice for serious play. The 720p fixed-focus webcam with electronic shutter is functional for calls but not a selling point for streaming or frequent video meetings. Speakers are usable for casual play, though headphones or external speakers remain preferable for games where positional audio matters.

Ports and upgradeability

Port selection is one of the laptop’s practical strengths. The documented configuration includes:

Port or feature What it offers
USB-A Three USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports, plus one always-on USB 3.2 Gen 1 port
USB-C Two USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 ports with DisplayPort support; one supports Power Delivery
Video HDMI 2.1 and USB-C DisplayPort
Networking Gigabit Ethernet and wireless connectivity
Audio 3.5mm headphone/microphone combo jack
Power Dedicated Lenovo power connector

The relevant Lenovo documentation lists two DDR4 SO-DIMM slots and two M.2 SSD positions, giving the platform a useful upgrade path. Exact supported maximums can depend on the specific machine and Lenovo specification revision, so verify the serial-number documentation before promising a particular capacity. Internal access is comparatively straightforward, but opening a used unit can reveal damaged clips, stripped screws, dust, or signs of poor repair work.

What to inspect before buying used

  1. Confirm the exact GPU in Windows Device Manager, NVIDIA Control Panel, Lenovo Vantage, or Lenovo’s serial-number lookup. Do not rely on “Legion 5 Pro 16” in the title.
  2. Check the display for dead pixels, uneven brightness, backlight bleed, flicker, and the expected 165Hz refresh option.
  3. Check battery full-charge capacity against its original design capacity and ask whether the battery has been replaced.
  4. Verify that the original high-wattage Lenovo charger is included. A missing or incorrect adapter can prevent full performance or proper charging.
  5. Test both USB-C ports, all USB-A ports, HDMI, Ethernet, the headphone jack, the webcam shutter, and wireless connectivity.
  6. Check SSD health and remaining life, and confirm whether the second M.2 slot is empty or occupied.
  7. Confirm the RAM arrangement and whether both SO-DIMM slots are accessible and functioning.
  8. Inspect the bottom cover, screw heads, hinges, fan noise, vents, and chassis for repair or liquid damage.
  9. Run a sustained game or benchmark while plugged in and check for crashes, severe throttling, visual artifacts, or abnormal fan noises.

Which configurations are worth considering?

The preferred version is the reviewed class: Ryzen 7 5800H with an RTX 3070, ideally the high-power 140W implementation, paired with at least 16GB of RAM and a healthy SSD. The 32GB/1TB test configuration is comfortable for modern multitasking, but memory and storage can be upgraded where the particular unit permits it.

RTX 3060 versions can still be sensible when priced lower, but they are not performance-equivalent to the reviewed RTX 3070. RTX 3050 and RTX 3050 Ti versions should be treated as entry-level alternatives, not cheaper names for the same machine. Be especially cautious when a seller uses stock photos or omits the GPU wattage.

Is it worth buying in 2026?

There is no responsible universal price recommendation because current used and clearance prices vary by country, condition, battery health, warranty, and seller. The historical prices—approximately $1,300 starting, $1,900 for the tested configuration, and about $1,530 at Walmart in August 2021—are launch-era reference points, not current deal targets.

Buy it when the RTX 3070 version is substantially cheaper than a newer RTX 4060-class or better laptop, the battery is healthy, the charger is present, and you specifically value the bright 16:10 screen and upgradeability. Avoid it when the seller asks near-current gaming-laptop money, the battery is heavily degraded, the display has been replaced with an inferior panel, or the unit lacks a suitable charger.

A newer laptop may offer a warranty, better efficiency, newer ray-tracing and upscaling support, and stronger performance in current games. However, do not assume every newer Legion Pro 5, ASUS ROG Strix G-series, or Acer Nitro 16 has a screen as bright, color-accurate, or well suited to productivity. Compare the actual panel specification, GPU power, weight, battery, warranty, and upgrade options—not just the product family name.

Bottom line

The Lenovo Legion 5 Pro 16ACH6H was an excellent high-performance gaming laptop for its generation, and its display remains its standout feature. In 2026, it is not a blanket recommendation or a modern flagship. It is a targeted used-market buy: choose the high-power RTX 3070 configuration, inspect the battery and screen carefully, insist on the correct charger, and pay a clear discount for the fact that the platform is based on 2021 hardware.
