If Windows says libgcc.dll or libgcc_s_seh-1.dll is missing, the program cannot find the GCC runtime shipped with its MinGW-w64 toolchain. Windows does not normally include this developer runtime. The reliable fix is to repair or reinstall the application that supplied the file, or—if you use MSYS2—install the package matching the program’s architecture and runtime family, then correct PATH. Do not download an arbitrary DLL from a mirror or copy it into System32; the correct filename and folder differ between 32-bit, 64-bit MSVCRT and UCRT builds.
What is libgcc.dll, and is it part of Windows?
libgcc is the low-level GCC runtime used by programs built with MinGW-w64. MSYS2 describes it as the “Low-level runtime library shipped by GCC (mingw-w64).” It supplies support code that a compiled application expects at launch; it is not a universal Windows component such as a standard system DLL.

Windows normally does not install this developer runtime for every application. A missing-file dialog therefore usually means that a particular game tool, emulator, mod manager, launcher, or other program was installed without its expected MinGW runtime, the runtime was removed, or Windows cannot locate the directory that contains it.
The wording can be misleading. An installer may say libgcc.dll even though the package actually contains an architecture-specific file. Current MSYS2 packages use these names and locations:

The 64-bit packages listed above were version 16.2.0-6 in MSYS2’s 2026 package listings. Package versions change, so use the package manager’s current repository rather than copying a file from another computer. A 32-bit executable and a 64-bit executable cannot safely use interchangeable runtime files, and an MSVCRT build should not be “fixed” with a UCRT directory simply because both are 64-bit.
How do I fix “libgcc.dll is missing” when only one program fails?
Start with the application’s own installation. A single-app failure usually points to a damaged, incomplete, or moved application runtime rather than a Windows-wide problem.
1. Identify the exact program and its installation source
Note the executable named in the dialog and where it came from. A publisher installer, a game launcher, an emulator bundle, and an MSYS2-built utility can all use MinGW-w64 while requiring different repair methods. If the program was recently moved to another drive, restored from a backup, or updated by replacing only part of its folder, reinstalling from the original publisher is safer than adding a random DLL.
2. Use Windows’ built-in app repair
For a desktop app that exposes repair controls, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the app’s three-dot menu, choose Advanced options, and select Repair. This attempts to restore the installation without deleting its data. Launch the program again after the operation completes.
If Repair does not help, return to the same page and choose Reset when it is available. Reset can remove the app’s local data and settings, so back up saves, profiles, plug-ins, and configuration files first. If neither option is available or the error remains, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and install a fresh copy from the publisher or the store that supplied it.
3. Check whether security software quarantined the runtime
Open your antivirus or Windows Security protection history and look for the executable or DLL named by the error. Restore a file only when you recognize the application and have verified that the installer came from a trustworthy source; otherwise reinstall the application and let your security software rescan it. Restoring a quarantined file does not correct a wrong architecture or a missing dependency.

4. Test from the application’s own folder
Look in the program’s installation directory for libgcc_s_seh-1.dll (64-bit) or libgcc_s_dw2-1.dll (32-bit). Do not rename another DLL to match the error. If the expected file is absent, the installation is incomplete and a repair or reinstall is the appropriate fix. If it is present, the program may be loading a different copy from PATH, or another dependency may be missing; continue with the architecture and PATH checks below.
How do I restore libgcc with MSYS2?
MSYS2 users should reinstall the package that matches the environment used to build the failing executable. Open the MSYS2 terminal associated with that environment and use its package manager, rather than downloading a standalone DLL.
Update the package database first
- Close programs that were built with MSYS2.
- Open the appropriate MSYS2 terminal. The environment name matters: MINGW64, UCRT64, and MINGW32 use different package prefixes.
- Update the system with
pacman -Syu. If MSYS2 asks you to close the terminal and reopen it, do so, then run the update command again until the update completes as instructed by MSYS2.
Install the matching libgcc package
- For a 64-bit MINGW64 build, run
pacman -S mingw-w64-x86_64-libgcc. - For a 64-bit UCRT64 build, run
pacman -S mingw-w64-ucrt-x86_64-libgcc. - For a 32-bit MINGW32 build, run
pacman -S mingw-w64-i686-libgcc. - Accept the package installation and allow dependencies to be synchronized from the same MSYS2 installation.
The package places the runtime in the environment’s bin directory. Installing a package for one environment does not automatically repair an executable built for another. If you are unsure which terminal produced the program, inspect its documentation or rebuild it in a single, known environment so that the runtime family is consistent.
Confirm that the file is present
In the corresponding MSYS2 terminal, run a directory listing such as ls /mingw64/bin/libgcc*, ls /ucrt64/bin/libgcc*, or ls /mingw32/bin/libgcc*. In Windows Explorer, the equivalent locations are commonly C:msys64mingw64bin, C:msys64ucrt64bin, and C:msys64mingw32bin. A customized MSYS2 installation may use another root directory; use the path shown by your installation rather than assuming C:msys64.

PATH is only relevant when the application expects the runtime to be found outside its own folder. Add the exact bin directory for the program’s toolchain, then start a new terminal or application process.
- Press Windows, search for Environment Variables, and open Edit the system environment variables.
- In System Properties, select Environment Variables.
- Under User variables (for your account) or System variables (for all users), select Path and choose Edit.
- Select New and add the real directory, for example
C:msys64mingw64binorC:msys64ucrt64bin. Add only the environment that matches the executable. - Confirm every dialog, close existing Command Prompt, PowerShell, launcher, and IDE windows, then open a new one. Existing processes retain the old PATH.
To inspect the active value, run where libgcc_s_seh-1.dll in Command Prompt or Get-Command libgcc_s_seh-1.dll in PowerShell. If no result appears, PATH does not expose that filename. If a result points to an unrelated toolchain, remove the conflicting entry or place the intended directory earlier in PATH. Avoid putting several incompatible MinGW distributions ahead of one another; that can make one program load a runtime from the wrong family.

For a self-contained application, keeping the correct runtime beside the executable is often preferable to a global PATH change. Ask the application publisher which deployment layout it supports before moving files, because some launchers intentionally set their own PATH.
How can I tell whether the problem is 32-bit, 64-bit, MSVCRT, or UCRT?
Match three things: the executable’s CPU architecture, the toolchain environment used to build it, and the runtime directory being searched. The words “64-bit” alone are not enough because 64-bit MINGW64 and 64-bit UCRT64 are separate environments.

Check the application’s release notes, build script, or installer name for clues such as i686, x86_64, mingw32, mingw64, or ucrt64. A developer can inspect a binary with a PE analysis utility, while a regular user should rely on the publisher’s stated requirements. Installing a 32-bit runtime into a 64-bit program folder, or mixing MSVCRT and UCRT dependencies, can replace one startup error with a different missing-DLL or entry-point error.
Should I run SFC or DISM for a missing libgcc DLL?
Use Windows integrity tools only when the symptoms extend beyond one MinGW application or Windows itself reports damaged system files. They do not install an application’s GCC runtime.
- Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand wait for it to finish. DISM repairs the Windows component store that Windows uses for system-file servicing. - Run
sfc /scannowand wait for verification to reach 100 percent. - Restart Windows and test the affected program again.
If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, repeat the process after DISM completes and review the result in the command output. If only one game or utility still reports libgcc, return to its installer or the matching MSYS2 package; system repair is not a substitute for restoring that application’s dependency.
What should I not do when libgcc.dll is missing?
- Do not use a random DLL download site. The filename shown in the error may not be the package filename, and an untrusted or mismatched binary can introduce security and compatibility problems.
- Do not copy the file into
C:WindowsSystem32. That directory is not the correct installation location for an application’s MinGW runtime and can create conflicts for unrelated programs. - Do not rename
libgcc_s_dw2-1.dlltolibgcc_s_seh-1.dll. The names identify different runtime arrangements, not interchangeable labels. - Do not mix package roots. A DLL from another MSYS2 installation, compiler version, or UCRT/MSVCRT family may satisfy the first lookup while breaking a later dependency.
- Do not delete package metadata. Let the publisher installer or
pacmanmanage dependencies so future updates can replace compatible files.

Does this advice apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11?
Yes. The repair paths above cover both editions, although menu wording can vary slightly by update. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; the operating system can still run existing software, but it no longer receives Microsoft support after that date. Keep that lifecycle limitation in mind when deciding whether a recurring toolchain problem is a reason to move the computer to a supported Windows release.
