The liblzo2-2.dll error is most strongly associated with OpenVPN-based Windows software, but another VPN client or application may have installed the copy on your computer.
Before changing anything, record:
- Which program was starting when the message appeared
- Whether the problem began after an update, uninstall, cleanup, antivirus alert, or incomplete reinstall
- The complete path shown in the error, if one is provided
- Whether the affected program is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether the program is OpenVPN Community Edition, OpenVPN Connect, a vendor-branded VPN, or another application
Do not download a loose copy of the DLL yet. The correct repair is normally to restore the application that owns it.

What liblzo2-2.dll is
liblzo2-2.dll is a Windows build of the LZO compression library. LZO support has been used by OpenVPN Windows software, and OpenVPN documentation records startup failures when the required LZO DLL was not installed.

That location is an example of where OpenVPN files have historically been installed, not a guarantee that every computer uses the same path.
Older Steganos Online Shield VPN packages and other software that embeds OpenVPN or LZO support may also contain a file with this name. Do not assume that every copy belongs to OpenVPN. The complete error path and the program that launched the message are more useful than the filename alone.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the program that requested the DLL
This is the safest and most likely fix.
If the application has a repair option
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the VPN client or application that produced the error.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the application on Windows 10.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If Repair does not solve the problem, return to the same screen and choose Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings. For VPN software, record connection profiles, certificates, and configuration details first.
Some applications do not provide Windows repair controls. In that case:
- Close the application.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the affected program and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the product’s official vendor.
- Install the version intended for your application and Windows architecture.
- Start the program and test the same action that previously failed.
For OpenVPN, distinguish between OpenVPN Community Edition and OpenVPN Connect. They are separate product lines. Reinstall the one that was originally present, unless the vendor or administrator has directed you to migrate.
A successful repair should restore the application’s own DLL beside its executable. If the same error appears immediately after installation, do not copy a random DLL into a system folder. Continue with the architecture and antivirus checks below.
Fix 2: Check whether the program and DLL architecture match
A 64-bit version of Windows can run 32-bit applications, but a 32-bit application needs a 32-bit copy of its dependency. A 64-bit application needs a 64-bit copy. The operating system’s bitness does not, by itself, tell you which installer you need.

OpenVPN publishes Windows packages for different architectures, and current OpenVPN Connect documentation also distinguishes supported Windows installer types. Choose the installer that matches the affected application, not simply the computer’s Windows edition.

To check an application’s architecture:
- Start the affected program if it opens far enough to appear in Task Manager.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading and choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform, if that column is available.
- Look for the application process.
On some Windows versions, a 32-bit process is marked with (32 bit) or appears as a name ending in *32 in Task Manager. If the program will not start, check its official documentation or ask the software administrator which package was deployed.
Do not install both 32-bit and 64-bit copies “just in case.” That can leave the wrong application version in place and makes later troubleshooting harder.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may remove or quarantine an application DLL after an update or reinstallation. A missing file that repeatedly disappears after installation is often a security event rather than a failed installer.
In Windows Security:
- Open the Start menu and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand an entry that refers to the affected application or
liblzo2-2.dll. - Check the original file path and detection details.
Restore or allow the file only when all of the following are true:
- The file came from the application’s official installer.
- The path belongs to the expected application directory.
- The installer was obtained from the vendor or your organization.
- The application’s publisher and installer signature can be verified.
If those conditions are not met, leave the item quarantined. Uninstall the application, obtain a clean official installer, and install it again. Microsoft explains the consequences of restoring quarantined items in its guidance on Protection History.
If antivirus removes the file again, contact the application vendor or your organization’s IT administrator. Do not repeatedly disable protection to force an unknown DLL into the application directory.
Fix 4: Use the application’s Verify or Repair function
Some launchers and managed applications include their own file validation.

The exact location depends on the application. Open its launcher, settings, or maintenance menu, run the verification, and allow it to replace missing files from the same release.

Do not mix a DLL from another application or another release. Even when the filename matches, the binary may have a different architecture, build, or dependency set.
If the affected VPN was supplied by an employer, router manufacturer, security suite, or remote-access provider, use that provider’s installer. A customized OpenVPN build may require files that the general OpenVPN package does not contain.
Fix 5: Check whether the error names a dependency instead
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that liblzo2-2.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named DLL but failed to load another DLL that it requires.

- Open the application’s installation folder.
- Confirm whether
liblzo2-2.dllexists beside the application executable. - Check whether the file was recently quarantined or replaced.
- Review the application’s installer or update log, if available.
- Use a reputable dependency inspection utility in an administrator-managed environment to identify missing imports.
If the named file exists but the application still fails, reinstall the complete application package rather than adding individual runtime files. This restores the dependency set that was tested with that release.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when other programs are affected
SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They generally do not recreate a third-party DLL installed inside an application folder, so they are not the first fix for liblzo2-2.dll.
Use them when Windows itself is behaving abnormally, several unrelated programs are failing, or the application repair may be affected by broader system corruption.

- Install pending Windows updates and restart.
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the application again.
Run DISM before SFC. If either command reports that it could not complete, note the exact message and repair the Windows installation before repeatedly reinstalling the application.

When manually hunting through Windows components and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed becomes impractical, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it finds; repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when that program owns the DLL.
Fix 7: Update related VPN or network drivers
A driver update will not normally recreate an application-bundled liblzo2-2.dll, but it can matter when the VPN also fails because its virtual network adapter or network filter is damaged.
To inspect network devices:
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Look for a VPN adapter, TAP adapter, Wintun adapter, or a device with a warning icon.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Read the Device status message on the General tab.
- Use Update driver only with a driver supplied by the device or VPN vendor.
- If the vendor instructs you to reinstall the adapter, select Uninstall device, restart, and run the official VPN installer again.
Do not remove a working corporate VPN adapter without confirming that you have the required installer and connection settings.
Manually identifying the correct driver among several similarly named network devices can take time. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show outdated drivers; installation is handled by the full version. It is not required for this DLL repair, and the VPN vendor’s own driver package remains the preferred source.

If the error began immediately after an update or cleanup and the application cannot be repaired, System Restore may return the system to an earlier state.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs, if available.
- Review the applications and drivers that may be changed.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore is not a substitute for reinstalling the correct application. Do not use it if no suitable restore point exists, and back up important work before proceeding.
Avoid these common wrong fixes
Do not copy the DLL into System32 or SysWOW64
An application-bundled DLL normally belongs in that application’s directory. System32 conventionally contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. Those folders are not general-purpose storage for third-party application files.
Copying a DLL into a broad system directory can create version conflicts and DLL preloading risks. Windows also uses an application’s directory as part of its DLL search process.
Do not use regsvr32 as a general repair command
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no evidence that liblzo2-2.dll is a COM or ActiveX server that should be registered.
Do not treat this as a normal fix:
regsvr32 liblzo2-2.dll
It will not install a missing dependency and may only produce another error.

Do not rely on Visual C++ Redistributable as the primary fix
This DLL is not established as a Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable component. Installing runtimes “just in case” may add unrelated variables without restoring the application’s own file. Use the application’s official installer first.
Do not download an arbitrary DLL
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible build, or a file that does not match the application’s other binaries. They also leave the broken installation and missing dependency unresolved.
Use the official installer for OpenVPN, the official installer for the affected VPN vendor, or your organization’s approved software package. If a controlled repair requires extracting the DLL manually, use the exact file from the same verified installer version and restore it only to the application directory.
FAQ
Is liblzo2-2.dll included with Windows?
No reliable evidence indicates that it is a standard Windows file. It normally arrives with the third-party application that needs LZO support.
Does it always belong to OpenVPN?
No. OpenVPN is the strongest documented association, but other VPN clients and applications may bundle LZO or an OpenVPN-derived component. Identify the caller from the error path and installation directory.

Is the supplied 64-bit, version 0.0.0.0 metadata authoritative?
No. A displayed size or 0.0.0.0 version is not enough to identify a canonical release. Use the application’s official installer and match its architecture.
Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable?
Usually not as the first step. Repair the parent application and investigate whether a dependent DLL is missing.
What if reinstalling does not help?
Check Protection History, confirm that the correct 32-bit or 64-bit package was installed, verify the application’s files, and determine whether antivirus or organizational policy removes the DLL immediately. If the file exists but will not load, investigate its dependencies.
Can SFC restore this DLL?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows components, while this file generally belongs to an application installation.
How do I identify the application that requested it?
Use the complete path in the error, check Event Viewer under Windows Logs > Application, review installer logs, or capture the failure with Microsoft Process Monitor. The executable that attempts to load the file is the application you need to repair.
