The libmpfr.dll message means the program you started cannot find the MPFR multiple-precision floating-point library it was built to use. The safest fix is to repair or reinstall that owning program; if it is an MSYS2 toolchain, install the matching MSYS2 package for its architecture and runtime. Do not download a randomly renamed DLL or place one in System32.
Current Windows toolchains commonly use the versioned filename libmpfr-6.dll, so the exact environment matters. The procedure below identifies the program, restores the correct dependency, checks PATH and runtime compatibility, and uses Windows component repair only when system corruption is plausible.

MPFR is the GNU multiple-precision floating-point library. Software that performs high-precision numerical work can load MPFR at startup rather than embedding the library inside its executable. If Windows cannot locate the expected library, it stops the program and displays messages such as “libmpfr.dll is missing from your computer,” “libmpfr.dll was not found,” or an error naming a dependent component.
The name in the dialog is not always the exact filename installed by a current toolchain. MSYS2 packages commonly provide a versioned file called libmpfr-6.dll. A program built against a different MPFR release may request another name or application-specific import, so simply finding a similarly named file is not proof that it is compatible.

MPFR files are distributed separately for several Windows environments:
- MinGW64: 64-bit programs normally use the
/mingw64/binruntime and themingw-w64-x86_64-mpfrpackage. - MinGW32: 32-bit programs normally use
/mingw32/binand themingw-w64-i686-mpfrpackage. - UCRT64: programs built for the Universal C Runtime environment use
/ucrt64/binand themingw-w64-ucrt-x86_64-mpfrpackage. - Native MSYS: the POSIX-like MSYS environment uses its own package and supplies
msys-mpfr-6.dll, normally under/usr/bin.
These runtimes are not interchangeable. An executable built for MinGW, UCRT64, or native MSYS can require different supporting DLLs even when the library name looks almost identical.

Most cases are dependency or launch-context problems, not a missing Windows system file. The likely cause can usually be narrowed down from the program that produced the dialog.
The owning application was damaged
An interrupted update, incomplete uninstall, disk error, or security cleanup can remove one file from an otherwise intact application. Desktop software may then fail before its own interface appears. Repairing or reinstalling that application restores the complete set of files selected by its vendor rather than guessing which DLL revision is needed.
The wrong MSYS2 package or architecture was installed
Installing a 32-bit package for a 64-bit executable, or a MinGW package for a UCRT64 executable, leaves the program with an incompatible dependency. Windows may report a missing DLL even when another MPFR DLL is present elsewhere on the computer.
The correct DLL exists, but PATH is wrong
MSYS2 programs rely on the environment from which they are launched. Starting a MinGW-built program from an unrelated Command Prompt, another shell, or a desktop shortcut can hide the toolchain’s own bin directory. A stale PATH can also make Windows find a DLL from a different runtime first.
The executable expects a different MPFR release
A program compiled against an unversioned or older import name may not accept the current versioned file. Renaming libmpfr-6.dll to libmpfr.dll changes the filename but not its binary interface, and can create a harder-to-diagnose crash.

Windows component corruption is involved
Damage to protected Windows components can cause broader startup failures, but the standard Windows repair tools do not normally replace a third-party MPFR library installed by MSYS2 or another development toolchain. Use DISM and SFC after addressing the owning application, not as a substitute for reinstalling that application.

How do I identify the program that needs libmpfr?
Start with the exact action that triggers the message. The name of the failing executable determines where the repair should be performed.
- Reproduce the error once. Note whether it appears when opening a game or desktop application, running a compiler, invoking a command in an MSYS2 shell, or launching a shortcut. Record the complete wording, including any executable name.
- Check the shortcut or command. Right-click a shortcut, choose Properties, and inspect Target and Start in. For a shell command, identify which MSYS2 terminal—MSYS, MinGW64, MinGW32, or UCRT64—is open.
- Locate the installation folder. A program installed under an MSYS2 prefix generally belongs to that prefix. A separate desktop application should be repaired through its own installer or Windows app settings, not by modifying the MSYS2 folders.
- Check architecture when known. A 32-bit executable needs the 32-bit dependency even on 64-bit Windows. If the vendor documents a specific runtime, use that documentation instead of inferring compatibility from the filename.
- Stop if the program is unknown. Do not download a DLL first. Identify the executable or uninstall a suspicious leftover application before changing system directories.
How do I fix libmpfr.dll by repairing the owning application?
Repairing the software that raised the error is the first-line fix because it restores the vendor’s complete dependency set and the correct version.
Microsoft Store and packaged apps
- Open Settings and choose Apps.
- Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the affected application, open Advanced options, and choose Repair if that option is available. Repair keeps the application’s data in place.
- Launch the program again. If Repair does not help, return to the same screen and use Reset only after confirming that the app’s local data can be recreated or backed up.
Traditional desktop programs and toolchains
Use the application’s installer to select a repair option when offered. After reinstalling, launch the program from the same environment for which it was built. A desktop shortcut that bypasses the MSYS2 shell can still fail if its PATH does not contain the correct prefix.

How do I reinstall the matching MSYS2 MPFR package?
Use the package manager inside the environment that owns the executable. Keep the architecture and runtime consistent throughout the operation.
MinGW64
Open the MSYS2 MinGW64 terminal and install the 64-bit package:
pacman -S mingw-w64-x86_64-mpfrThis package supplies the MinGW64 build and places its versioned DLL in the MinGW64 binary directory. Do not run the command from a native MSYS shell and then expect a MinGW64 application to use a native MSYS DLL.
MinGW32
Open the MSYS2 MinGW32 terminal and install the 32-bit package:

UCRT64
Open the MSYS2 UCRT64 terminal and install the UCRT64 package:
pacman -S mingw-w64-ucrt-x86_64-mpfrUCRT64 is a distinct runtime. A MinGW64 package may place a similarly named DLL in another prefix without providing the runtime expected by a UCRT64 build.

Native MSYS
For a command that runs in the native MSYS terminal, select the MPFR package provided for that environment through its package manager. It supplies msys-mpfr-6.dll under /usr/bin, rather than the MinGW or UCRT64 file. Do not substitute a file from /mingw64/bin, /mingw32/bin, or /ucrt64/bin.

How do I correct PATH and the launch context?
A correct package can still appear missing when the executable starts with the wrong environment variables. The simplest test is to launch the program from its matching MSYS2 terminal.
- Open the terminal that corresponds to the program: MinGW64, MinGW32, UCRT64, or native MSYS.
- Change to the program’s directory and run the executable there, or invoke the documented command from that shell.
- If it works in the matching terminal but not from a shortcut, edit the shortcut’s Start in folder or recreate it using the toolchain’s launcher. Avoid adding every MSYS2
bindirectory to the global Windows PATH. - Check for duplicate MPFR DLLs in unrelated folders. A stale copy earlier in PATH can be loaded before the intended version and produce a different error.
- Close and reopen shells after changing PATH. Existing processes retain their old environment.
Never rename a versioned DLL to satisfy an unversioned error message. A loader can reject a file because of an incompatible import table, runtime, or architecture even when the renamed file has the expected spelling.

Random DLL download sites are not a safe or reliable solution. They may provide a file built for another architecture, an incompatible runtime, an altered binary, or a file with no trustworthy provenance. They also leave the rest of the application’s dependency set unrepaired.

Obtain MPFR through the owning application’s official installer or the matching MSYS2 package in the correct environment. If a vendor supplies a signed installer or checksum, use that verification method. Keep the file inside the application or toolchain directory unless the vendor explicitly documents another location; do not overwrite files in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Antivirus software can inspect a newly downloaded installer, but an antivirus scan does not establish that a DLL is ABI-compatible with your executable. Compatibility and provenance must both be correct.

Should I run DISM and SFC?
Run Windows component repair when the MPFR message accompanies wider system corruption, several unrelated applications fail, or the owning application has already been repaired without resolving startup. Microsoft specifies running DISM before System File Checker.
- Save work and open Command Prompt as an administrator. Search for “Command Prompt,” right-click it, and choose Run as administrator.
- Run DISM and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth- After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannowDo not close the window while either scan is running. Restart Windows when prompted, then test the original program. These commands repair protected Windows components; they may not restore a third-party MPFR DLL installed by MSYS2 or another application.
What can I do if the error remains after reinstalling?
Use Windows Recovery Environment Startup Repair
Startup Repair is appropriate when Windows itself has trouble starting or multiple system files are damaged. It is not a substitute for reinstalling a missing application dependency.
- On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Recovery. On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
- Under advanced startup, choose Restart now.
- After the recovery screen appears, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.
- Let Windows complete the check and restart, then launch the affected application from its proper environment.
Reinstall the current Windows 11 version
On supported Windows 11 builds, Microsoft provides a recovery reinstall that reinstalls the current version of Windows while preserving apps, files, and settings. The label and availability can vary by edition and update state, so read the confirmation screen carefully and back up important files first. Use this escalation only after repairing the owning program and checking its MSYS2 runtime; a Windows reinstall cannot correct a MinGW-versus-UCRT package mismatch.
How do I confirm that the repair worked?
- The original executable starts without the missing-library dialog.
- A command-line tool runs from the intended MSYS2 terminal, not only from an accidental alternate shell.
- The installed DLL is in the matching prefix:
/mingw64/bin,/mingw32/bin,/ucrt64/bin, or native MSYS/usr/bin. - The program’s architecture and runtime match the package you installed.
- No DLL was renamed or copied into a Windows system directory.
- Other applications remain functional after any DISM, SFC, recovery, or reinstall operation.
If the message changes from “missing” to “entry point not found,” “bad image,” or an immediate crash, that is useful evidence: Windows is now finding a DLL, but the file is incompatible. Remove the mismatched copy, restore the owning application or correct package, and launch it from the proper environment rather than trying another random download.

Can I copy libmpfr-6.dll beside the game or application executable?
Only the application vendor can establish that layout is supported. A private copy can mask a broken installation and may be loaded instead of the runtime’s intended file, so repairing or reinstalling the owning software is the safer default.
Why does a 32-bit program need a different package on 64-bit Windows?
The executable’s architecture determines the ABI and loader requirements, not the bitness of Windows itself. A 32-bit MinGW application therefore needs the MinGW32 MPFR package even when it runs on a 64-bit edition of Windows.
How can I tell whether PATH is finding the wrong MPFR DLL?
Run the program from its matching MSYS2 terminal and compare that result with a normal Command Prompt or shortcut. If only the matching terminal works, inspect duplicate MPFR files and launch settings rather than adding every toolchain directory to the global PATH.
Will DISM replace a missing MPFR file?
